  1. Wow! Two month testing cycles? When I was younger and did Karate, we had 4-month testing cycles until purple belt (shi kyu), then it was 8 months. It served to keep only the kids who had a real interest in MA and were willing to work hard toward a long term goal.
  2. That is very true. A system defines what a bb is to them- sometimes it is a very long, hard road, sometimes not long, but hard, sometimes neither, sometimes (very often, I've seen- too often) it's a very long road, but not hard... pretty much just put in your time, and keep learning things to a passing- not great- but passing degree. We got into this discussion about the term and rank of "Master" in another thread http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=25606&highlight=master
  3. Amen! I'm a chick too, and we are totally insane....all of us!!! I don't understand why girls do what they do half the time.
  4. I would cut way back on training- If you force yourself, you will just resent your time there and that isn't good for anything. If you cut back to like 1 day a week, to keep up with all that is going on, but not force yourself, this lull will probably pass. We all have times that we fall out of the MA momentum and get into other stuff, but if you just stick with it at a slow pace, things will probably start to be less of a hassel for you with them. Just my $.02, though.
  5. I like MA shoes because if someone attacked me in the street, I wouldn't be barefoot, but I'm more comfortable barefoot because I'm used to it.
  6. Welcome and enjoy!
  7. This is sooooo true!!! You should do something for yourself tonight Rent a favorite video and eat a favorite candy-bar. Maybe go over some techniques that you really like. Hope you have a better weekend.
  8. Well really, isn't a BB "just the beginning" ? Just a thought. In my original style we never had a BB below 14, and the 14-yr-old was extaordinary in ability and maturity. In my current styles, I only train with adults. I'm watching a TV show right now about a 10-year-old BB inTKD.... I remember TKD BB's in my home town at 11 and 12 years old... and, having seen their techniques, I'm disinclined to think that this is a good idea in all cases.
  9. Maybe one evening a week you could ask her to go for a walk with you?
  10. Thats pretty sweet! Thanks, I'll pass it on!
  11. Also, you can't have received money from them, and not provide the service without refund.
  12. Good luck!!! My advice- Have fun! I know that I always enjoyed myself a lot more when I thought that he was having a good time. Also, if she tries to pay for herself, let her.... some girls feel weird being paid for, but its awesome that you are offering. I'm sure it will make her feel like you like her. And if you do something awkward, like try to put your arm around her and miss and hit your arm against the chair and make a bunch of noise or something like that- don't flip- she probably thinks its adorable and is going to like you all the more. So really, you can't mess up if you just chill and have a good time
  13. Let me know if you guys ever feel like making a trip to Pittsburgh

  16. I often have my front hand open and my back hand closed, and high.
  17. Yes, Thank you!!
  18. I have the same problem. I think flexibility is the isuue- I'm way flexible lots of ways, but not that way I keep meaning to work on it, but I forget.
  19. start out doing reps of one technique until you get really fast, then add another, then add another...
  20. Welcome! I did MA when I was young, too, quit, and am back again I think that's pretty common.
  21. Yeh, if you charged someone for a month of training and then denied them, or advertised that you will not teach anyone who is male or anyone with red hair, then that would be a problem, but not as you've described them.
  22. Yeh, I've never had to be in a fight... the couple times that I've been grabbed when I was out in the city, one strike so that I could pull away was sufficient. Therefore, my immediate use of violence prevented their use of serious violence against me (and thus me against them).
  23. Lurk for a while- you'll run into things that you feel you can talk about Check out the General chat areas and humor and games!
