Russian Special Froces Training?
G95champ replied to Niko's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Its like the US Navy Seals or Army Rangers. Sure your good at SD but its prob. not a real style with a real focus on training as MA train. Most Sp Forces coruses I have looked into have a focus on some Akkido/Hapikido locks and throws, along with knife def. -
That usually changes from school to school reguardless of style. A good rule of thumb is to go from light to dark colors

Torn hamstring out 6 months. Well I was at class and did a lot of hand techinqes but NO kicking, sparring, not much kata, lol. I did a lot of reading and watching O.

What do you mean by rotating?

Boxing
G95champ replied to wilko9999's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Yeah boxing is a MA. MA is a broad term. Some will try and restrict it to Japan styles only. Whlie others are more accepting to those who use their hands and feet. Some say weapons some say no weapons. If you take it to its broadest term it would include any style of combat. -
Well thats the same with any sport or art you do. None of us can be Barry Bonds, Marhsall Faulk, Garrth Brooks, or Harrison Ford but we can be the best we can be.

• Did the JKA really practice Shotokan karate? Yes and No. I think the early JKA was set up arround Shotokan but has came to included several other forms. • Which instructors actually trained with Gichin Funakoshi? Nishyama, Okazakia, and Ohshima (sp) on all of them but those are the 3 big names I am aware of. • How were the Shotokan bunkai lost? Where they lost? I think most are still there if you look for them. • Why are there so many errors in Shotokan Kata? Whats wrong? I know well have saw about a dozen differant versions of Bassai Dai. Who's to say this one is right and that one is wrong differant styles and schools teach everything a bit differantly. Yeah there is a speed, form, idea Fuankoshi taught but he was not right or wrong. As long as each school is conistant with its kata I don't see this being a big problem. • Does modern Shotokan come from Gichin Funakoshi? Yes and No. Yeah Funakoshi was the guy who laid the ground plans for it. However WWII changed a lot of his thoughts. Early Shotokan taught a lot more throws such as in Judo. Its still got those moves in it but they are not emphisised as much as they were early on. Add to things always change with time for the good or bad. • Why does Shotokan no longer teach traditional weight training, xxbody conditioning and weapons as they once did? I don't know that it ever taught weapons. I may be wrong. As far as weight training lots of focus is put on the LOW stance and Isometric moves. So I don't think I would say we don't focus on it. • Why has so much been done to suppress the true history of xxShotokan? I don't konow that it has. IMO what has been done is a lot of McDojo type schools claim the name Shotokan but don't know much about it. • Why are there so many forms of Shotokan? Again I don't know that they are. Unless your refering to like the JKA, ISAK, FSKA, etc. All still have the same root base just some differant views on kata. • Who is praticising the karate of Gichin Funakoshi? Im some respects I think we all are. Funakoshi felt we would make the MA ours one day. Kind of like Lee and his style without style. On a more specific answer those who read and study his books espically Karate Do Kyohan. • How big is Shotokan's debt to Shorin Ryu? Most of the early kata are hard kata and have ties to Goju Ryu. However Funakoshi did train under many people and it is said that Shotokan is a mix of Goju's Hard and Shorin Soft. So 50/50 I guess. Hope that helps

I will add the step behind side kick from the horse stance is VERY powerful as well if not the strongest kick in Shotokan.

Bodidarmma (sp) brought the first MA out of India. Its still up for debate if he was influenced by the Greeks and West or if everything started in India. However from India to China then to Okinawa and Japan.

GRR! A martial artists nightmare!
G95champ replied to Beer-monster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
List of things I did when my old school closed and before I started teaching. 1. Kata - you can never do it enough. You will always learn something and you get good basic work in it. 2. Read - buy some books about your MA and learn as much as you can about it. You may also want to look into some books but other famous MAists or styles just for the reference. 3. Stay in Shape - Could be running, lifting weights, playing sports, doing exercise in your room at night, etc. Just don't get lazy and wish things would change. 4. Find someone - get up with a person in your clas and train with each other. Spar, teach the other kata you don't know, etc. Im sure their is someone in your old dojo who still wants to train. 5. Meet with you teacher - see him as much as you can and aske for his advice.
