  1. Welcome to KF
  2. I have not been to a tourney in a long time but it was something like this. For Kata 1. Enter the ring facing the judees. Bow before comming in. Not from the side. 2. Run up in front of them say your name, school and kata. Bow then backwards run to your starting point. Wait for a nod or ready sign. 3. Bow and begin your kata. 4. When done wait till the judges score, then bow step out of the ring backwards just as you came in and bow once more. Then return to your seat. For Sparring 1. Bow before comming into the ring 2. The ref will usually take over from there telling you to bow to the opponent or him or whatever. 3. After the match walk out of the wring backwards and bow as you leave. Basically treat entering the ring like entering the dojo.
  3. Tyson before Jail Lee ater Tyson got out of Jail. Well I should say Tyson with Cuspis or Lee after Tyson fired Cuspis. I think that was his white trainers name.
  4. Welcome Did you start over in rank by choice or are you in a differant style?
  5. Although I have a black belt in a differant style I never stopped my Shotokan training and I will always be shotokan first and formost. I was already a black belt in shotokan when I went to college. Their was not shotokan clubs so I got involved with a guy who did a variety of MA's. He called it American TAO karate but the focus was on Hipakido, TKD, and some Chin Na Kung Fu. It was a nice exp for sure. I learned a lot and it made my Shotokan much stronger. I honestly don't know that I could do all the kata in ATK now because I have been out of school for 4 years. this fall. See I never planned on ATK being my main art and both teachers knew that. My Shotokan Sensei was please I was still training and my ATK Sensei understood. Both were cool with it and both are very close friends stil yet. Just be up front with people and don't sneak behind their back and you should not have any problems.
  6. Come on ZR you know you were thinking the same thing. LOL
  7. I have a 40lbs Everlast bag I have had for 7 years or so. Its been really good and took a lot of beating. Thank God for Duct Tape. I wish I had gotten a long one 100lbs bag so I could work low kicks on it. Im not a fan of the water bags we have busted several of them in class befor but they are easier on kids and women because they are softer.

    Questions

Geist Where are you in state? PM me if you would rather keep this to yourself. I teach in Gilbert at the LJHCC. However this is my last week of public teaching due to football season starting but I have some people you could get up with if you in our area.
  9. From the movie Predator If it bleeds we can kill it.
  10. Welcome Charlie
  11. Shotokan mixes well with most arts because it is very well rounded.
  12. I hope when I find the (one) that she is into MA's. Would make our fights as much fun as making up. LOL
  13. Same reason MT turns out better fighters sooner. Because that is the focus. I can take Yoga but if I work on the strikes involved in it for 2 weeks you will be an effective fighter. Its all about what you focus on.
  14. Understood To each his own. My Sensei moved away about 4 years ago and I have had to train myself it is very hard. So I understand what you are talking about when you say you use Shorin versions because you have access. Most of the kata are very simular anyhow. So it should not be a big deal.
  15. Look into a church or YMCA. Both usually are cheaper however you have certin ruls you must go by. The only other thing would be to teach out of your home which may mean moving into a bigger house or apt.
  16. We missed him by like 24 hrs Sunday mouring. They say we are hot on his trail now. You can run but you can't hid Saddam.
  17. I just got home from weightlifting and saw it on Fox News. Honestly I did not know he was still alive. Anyway he was 100. One of the true comics who could make people LOL with out using bad words and he always was there for our troops. Great American God Bless his family
  18. I have never saw a kata that had no Kiai's. I have saw a lot that had way too many lol. Like every move. LOL. Yes their are certin points in kata where you are supposed to kiai but really if it feels good or natural to do it at other points then do it. Just shows me your putting out more effort and really thinking about what your doing.
  19. Nope. Funakoshi outlined the 12 kata he wanted taught above all in Karate Do Kyhon. Add to that the 26/29 that he listed early on as the base of Shotokan. I have trained for just over 10 years and I only know 20 of these kata. Out of those 20 I would say I only feel I KNOW a dozen or so. If you practice kata the way it is ment to be used then it will take you a life time to learn the ones he chose to include much less going outside and finding others.
  20. I don't figure many Seal in training are worried about getting on line. What time they do get to themselves Im sure its spent writting home. People in the armed forces don't have much free time anyhow I would only guess the Seals, Rangers, Green Berets have none.
  21. I don't know that kata or at least I don't know it by that name. However it takes time to learn kata. Don't expect to pick it up in one class, one week or even one month. Kata is a very important part of traing but Sensei Funakoshi said it takes 1000 reps of a kata before you know it and many more to master it.
  22. Its more or less just a way of relaxing. Im sure there are deeper schools of it that you can go into but for the sake of what we do in class its bascailly just used to calm down and relax. When I teach it I basically say just take deep breaths and try and clear you mind and let your body go limp. However I have had some who pray or just go though the motions out of respect. We usually don't do it much longer than a min or so at the start and end of class. Im sure the deeper you go into it and the longer you do it you can become really relaxed. However their are no SUPERPOWERS or MIND CONTROL things that come out of it.
  23. If they are. I don't think they will be spending to much of their time on line surfing messageboards. Espically Seals. LOL
  24. Always work it as low as you can. However it can be done high. As long as the knees are bent and the weight is balanced on the outsides of your feet.
