A friend and I once read that series for awhile some time back. I remember the number of books in it were endless, he was also one of my fav characters(Raistlin). But then I got into martial art novels and since then I havnt taken the time to read over my old books.

Olympic Team
Menjo replied to Scummy's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Just to add a thought. I'm very glad that any style of Karate is not in the Olympics, with that kind of popularity, finding a decent dojo would be difficult. The Olympics would add such popularity that karate already has, that alot of good training would get lost. -
Just recently I was caught with a mild flu which built up over a few days. During my delirium I was training at home when I was sick for shorter than the regular time of training. When I got to a clinic in town held by Master Okazaki himself, I was barely able to walk. Foolishly, I still went to the clinic and I was barely able to make the proper techniques and by the end I thought I was dead. The next day and since then, my skill in Shotokan has increased greatly beyond I thought was possible for myself in such a short time and everything I do is twice as good in comparison to prior the illness. I had also humbly asked other Karateka if they noticed a difference in my training, for better or for worse. It may have just been politnes, however I was told my technique has improved greatly... Odd enough as it is, perhaps this is a common thing most MA know about? I'm curious to know if anyone else has had a experiance similar to this...

I looked "art" up in the dictionary and found some sastisfactory results... Other than that, I would consider it a Art with OUR knowledge of science and some principles yet to be understood.

If you want to work on mass attacks, then get a couple of guys and go at it. Working a Kata is fine, but having 3 guys attack you will open your eyes. I'm sure plenty of MA do this actually to develop Bunkai, I enjoy the challenge when we get the opportunity to work on your point.

A good read. Did you start off with this attitude?

I hope I read this wrong. If you truely mean this, then maybe you need to keep a training log or some sort of journal. In my log, I keep my workouts on one page, and coments on the backs of the previous page. I record everything, how the workout went, how I feel, etc. I do this as martial arts is an aspect of my life that ties it all together. As I've mentioned in ohter posts, I look at the internal as a huge part of the arts. So many little things become clear through my training. Now with all of that said, I try to make a little progress in everything every day. So what may not seem like much day to day, is huge over months, years, and decades. For instance, I used to have a huge temper. Through taining, couseling, and chaning my attitude, I still have a temper, but it's one thats like a sleeping fed lion. It's there, it's very powerful, but as long as it's not threatened it's like it doesn't exist. But threaten it enough and it can come out. The key is keeping it asleep, which I continue to work on. In any case, do you meditate? Do you evaluate yourself often? Or are you very hard on yourself and evaluate yourself all the time? There's a difference between seeing progress over time and just looking at today, yesterday, and the short term. If you've truely come a long way after some reflection, then I hope I've helped. If you honestly believe that you've made little progress, I would challenge you to look at changing your training (on the mental side), and give yourself 3 months to see if you can make some huge leaps!!! Thats a great idea about logging my training, even though it wasnt directed towards me, thanks. Also in defence of what patusai said, I find quite a few MA won't admit that they are skilled or even gaining any talent...It keeps them training hard and not getting a swolen head, although I beleive its a good method, some aknowledgement to training should be accepted once in awhile. Just trying to get some ideas in...

shoalin demo
Menjo replied to shift's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Yea I must agree, some serious training and hard work here. I think it would successful in a street or real life confrontation. Entertaining to watch also . -
My answer will change from this post occasionaly the more I learn, however for now I wish had been more focused in the dojo in my early beginning training. I would have also participated in more tournaments, and also I wished I had started training at home more often back when I was unmotivated.

Menjo replied to Sympathy4thedevil's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Out of the two you mentioned, for quickness of application I'd go with jujitsu. For ending a fight quickly without alot of grappling I'd suggest Karate(although it may take awhile to learn your full potential). -
Thats true, but they would still have to have the same qualities any great fighter would have to have. Which means they would have a less likely but still a good chance at becoming a great fighter, so is it worth the little more chance, probably.

Unfortunatly I have plans for furthering my career in aviation, so I cant make that big of a choice. But yea thanks for all the advice from everyone!

Yea thats unfortunate, he may give martial arts a bad name one day(the trouble student). I've always beleived that one would have to earn the right to train, unfortuantly for my ideal, this is not the way of modern times.

comparing fighting styles
Menjo replied to ki master's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Don't mean to pick at it, however for better or for worse, in alot of western matches, these strikes are often not allowed. -
Kata could improve your balance if your style has kata.

I dont know much about this sort of topic, however I do have a valid question. First of all: I never knew this info you posted, thanks. Is there a process where you have to lose fat first and then build muscle or does it all happen at once?
-
Not alot of depth in this topic, however there is a cause for concern for myself. Recently like other MA, I've been constantly thinking about my training. Unfortunatly I think I'm taking it too far and I actually ended up training at 2am for kata, its interfering with my non-shotokan life also. Perhaps theres a way so I dont have to be addicted to my training?, any thoughts?

My First Instructor passed away
Menjo replied to swooshfinn's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Its dishearting to hear of the increasing passing away of these respectable Martial Artists. My thoughts and hopes go out to those who are at lose of his passing away.
