I cannot do the splits. I've been stretching for years and I still can't touch my feet ...must be genetic...its odd though because I can kick above my head, which confuses me even further lol.

rotational or linear?
Menjo replied to shorinryu912's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
KF dude, I share quite the similar view on blocks in regards to MA in general. As you had said, alot of blocks can be used for a offense of preperation of offense movements. Instead of arm locks and other movements(which is great if you know those techniques), now the difference between the two trainig methods or ideals is that I view it as my block shiting my opponents body to adjust my attack. Such as if someone was to punch towrds my face, I would use rising block, leaving thier lower or possibly upper body open for a short period of time, with that being open all sorts of opportunites arise. Its interesting to see what kind of training happens and the small, and sometimes large differences between the styles have. -
Who is your favourite famous Martial Artist?
Menjo replied to Jeet Kune Do's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree to a certain point. His ideas where very good, however I had once read somewhere that Bruce didn't approve of kata/forms and thought it pointless(sorry if this is incorrect), I hope this doesn't send this thread off into a frenzy of philosphy and history arguments, however that was one thing I was disappointed to hear come from such a legend. -
I was slow on this one, however: Welcome to KF!

Sorry, another question lol
Menjo replied to Dylan.McCullough's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No need to be sorry by all means firstly. Secondly first thing that comes to mind is boxing . Quite a few styles can be concentratated on punches or kicks or pretty much what you prefer (well for Shotokan at least, or at the very least how I was taught). I'd say that many martial arts a punch driven and speed driven but they all use body connection. No matter the martial art, I think I can safely say that most martial arts teach and train to use the body as a whole, such as hips for rotation or distancing. Or another example could be footwork. -
Wow the TKD guy got completly dominated. He had no balance, it was embarasing to watch. The Thai fighter wasn't even being agressive at all. Man no wonder TMA are constantly losing respect, martial artists who preform one simple kick and fall down.I dont mean to bash him but I wonder how he trained for that fight. P.S. I'm aware that there are other great TKD fighters out there.

Thanks alot -
Thats great, I have one question though. Does JKD have kata or forms in thier system?

Ok I see what you mean. Well we do have a beginner program which beginners enter to learn basic kihon and such. I thought of your intro as a speech towards the class, interesting enough though.

Ok that was comical.

Big Guys
Menjo replied to TheAnimal's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
For overwieghts(only sparred with 2 before) I think he took BJJ. I like to use my knees and stop his attack by kneeing and messing up his knees. He had terrible balance as well so then I didnt get to closely pressed agaisnt to him, and I just keep kneeing and doing quick hand attacks while he was on his back like a turtle... As for that, I wouldn't know what to do, maybe try to get his face -
Why would you call him arrogant? I cant speak for UseoForce however, from what I saw of Ultimate fighter 2, he seemed to have quite the ego. I respect him alot, however I thought his arrogance was quite apparent from what I see of him. But thats probably what helps him stay confident in his strategy.

Well to give some output, I think I'm SUPPOSED to aim towards the way a tiger would strike(shotokan symbol). By that I mean alot of the shotokan techniques from how I train, are meant so that by the time the enemy realizes that you are striking in a certain way, its too late. But its not really describing me as of the moment, but a goal later on.

Intros? I never thought of that. Our club hasn't made any introductions ever( I dont run it,).

I see fighting as when I spar with friends, so we go full contact in every aspect. So fighting for me is a tougher sparing, thats how I see it. But yea, I know what your getting at.

New to MA
Menjo replied to Edward's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
You sound like you have a promising look on MA, thats a really good start already. Now you have to find the right instructor to apply your attitude. Since you are focused on the more traditional martial arts, I'd suggest looking firstly in your area and make a list of all the dojos in it. Then go them, talk to the instructor and you should get a good sense of what is a good and bad dojo. If you're not confident in yourself with reling on instinct to choose, there are many topics here that can provide the answers you want. Best of luck. -
I dont compete very often anymore since I stopped Muay Thai, however usage of a video I'm sure is a sound plan. I just wish I had more experiance to look back upon. And to follow up, what is your conclusion to your thoughts about this topic?
-
I don't know myself(in regards to fighting tatics and goals), but I'd certainly like to find out and I intend to. However for now, how did you find out what type of fighter you are?

Black Belt gets knocked out
Menjo replied to kyokushin_coe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Wow, that guy is a disgrace to any martial art. I almost laughed but I relised that this is another example of the reason why the public is losing respect for certain martial arts. Who can blame them with guys like this walking around in a gi which is meant for training, he obviously had a messed up view of what Karate is. Thanks for posting that though, interesting and original. -
One of the essentials that I've learned as a scientist is the need for supporting evidence to a statement. Simply stating that something is so, does not make it correct. There are pros and cons to most things we do as well as exceptions to nearly everything. One of the things you will not find in my posts are statements without supporting evidence. Have I been wrong, absolutely, but this is a sign of growth. What I don't feel is appropriate for instructors are statements like the one "The Animal" just made, (void of any supporting evidence and rationale). If you are going to make a statement, and you plan on teaching, you had better have a good answer for the question(s) "why" and "how". LOL I just end up supporting my statements with constant condradictions and completly off topic posts . In regards to the very last statement, sometimes I think its good for me not to have prepared anything, then I learn to learn. I can also then work off others' statements for argument. But for the general idea, the average response in a negative tone at least should have some back up or logic.

You now have given me a new goal! I have to find out what type of fighter I am. Thanks I guess.
