  1. Kajukenbo Self Defense:(1949-Hawaii) no nonsense self defense that adapts to the student.Often referred as: the art of dirty street fighting. Nothing is held back. Karate(tang soo do)- kicks and kicking combinations, knees, etc judo- throws, sweeps, strangling techniques jujitsu- groundwork, locks, joint control kenpo- hard paced punches, elbows, finger jabs, in coherent sequences Chinese Boxing- fluidity, strikes, some footwork
  2. Looks like we have similar views here. I agree with both of you on this. I say a fight is a contest were there is a "winner" and a "loser". Self-defense is a individualized war, you survive or you die. Fights are generally by mutual consent (which by the way eliminates all claims of justifiable force from a leagal stand point), and self-defense is "defending" against victimization. however, if you snap someone's neck instead of just knocking him out or breaking a limb, it would be considered excesive force. you defend yourself but you end up in jail. even if only for a year. if it was an accident on the other hand... like someone falling over, or traffic getting in the way, MAYBE you could get out of it.
  3. yes, we know that swords will lose the battle against guns: that is not what is discussed here. an European knight would also fall if shot at. we are discussing the martial art aspects of both european and japanese knights.
  4. footwork is as crucial as arm strength. why? because with your footwork you can shift your weight so it can go with the punch, thus hitting harder. the bigger(weight) you are, the harder you punch- but you gotta use your legs. if you get problems with weak joints(any part of the body) go with a Glucosamine supplement.
  5. if you feel your wrist and/or hands are getting hurt(even if a little) while hitting the bag, maybe you should take a look at how you position ur fist at impact with the bag. Bushidoman is right about telling u to wrap your wrists as it will help you endure the force against your arm bones and joints. if you take the fist out of alignment with your arm(at the time of impact), the harder you punch, the more you will hurt your hand and wrist. Make sure you start moving slow and build up the speed and strength. most exercises to strengthen ur fists are associated with arthritis because when bones get hit, calcium covers the bruised bone automatically; this calcium could deposit on ur joints causing arthritis. however, if you want to train ur hands to be harder- pushups on ur fists, on different angles ill not only strengthen your fists, but ur wrists too as they will show you when your fists arent aligned with the rest of your arms -you wont be able to do the fist-pushups if you are not properly aligned- Also, you might want to pick up boxing or kickboxing books that will give you tips on doing your own routine instead of just punching the bag without footwork or form.
  6. i know how to snap someone's neck and i know certain points that cause certain death. that doesnt mean I will kill someone in a "self-defense" situation; it doesnt call for it. you could be ready for it, I would call that person a "psycho". you know ultimate power; show it by enforcing self-control
  7. I am not sure that this is necessarily the case, when people ask questions about things. When it comes to clarifying how something is done, I think it is important to ask questions, to make sure you do it the proper way. I think that it shows a healthy willingness to grow in the Martial Arts. if you ask something you dont understand, you are asking to learn, if you already learned something and you ask for more material, you are thirsty to learn more- you are getting bored with your current class; you talk to ur instructor about more stuff or special tutoring. asking constantly whether you are doing something right means you dont believe in what you are doing(Could also mean a lack in self-steem or confidence) or you are not really sure of your material ; u get a notebook and shortly after class, u copy down whatever new material you have come across. I'm not saying asking is not healthy, but if you are asking questions frequently while others are not, take a look at yourself to see if its really a question for yourself or for the teacher.
  8. Keyword SHOULD i know tons of students who have made it without practising a day in their lives... i don't know how they do it (they obviously dont get their blacks but they get high up) but if you really wanted to get down to it you could find a bazillion flaws in their technique.. teacher's fault- u cant let them slack off or you get high ranking people who dont have what it takes...
  9. that means that you are either learning too quickly and getting bored or you definitely are too impatient and u get lost with ease. which one are you?
  10. if you know your material, worst case scenario, you get bored, it is not punishment enough for someone to repeat what they already know- specially since you should always practice basics anyway.
  11. well, if all he did was talk out of place or something like that, making hoim repeat his training doesnt really fix the problem - unless he ammended himself demoting of rank would be good for someone who is way too proud of what he has accomplished so far. but if it worked, even better! I would have made him spend a couple of classes without talking at all, or pushups or whatever other nice exercise(in very large quantities) every time he got out of line. That ususally helps me straigthen them out.
  12. Yes, this is correct. The foot is traveling faster than the rest of the leg! This is because the shin is one of the most dense bones in the body. It supports the weight and takes all of the shock and impact you put on it. Only your femur (thigh bone) compares in strength and durability. Plus the shape of the shin gives it a nice little ridge to strike with, kinda like having a blade on it. Less little bones, more dense, sharp, not much loss of impact = better to strike with IMO however, keep in mind that in order for you to kick with your shin correctly you must train it first, kinda like your knuckles when you first start training, until they lose the nerves that make hitting them hurt and your bones get denser.Learning to use your shins effectively is not something that happens overnight, it will take some serious training, if you want to kick this way. you can still kick with your feet, it is all about technique; certain parts of your foot will be more resistant than others, so learn to use those parts and not the ones most likely to break.
  13. in kajukenbo we train mostly for self-defense techniques as our curriculum however, our partners react to our movements as they would in real life. example: the technique, among other things, has a kick to the groin, if they dont hit and graze the leg, your partner is allowed to move out of the way, try to grapple you or hit you. you can adapt the way you train to be more intense or less intense, gradually increasing as u get better. btw, our techniques have to be applied at full force unless its too dangerous; you apply the armlock, you dont break the arm; you punch the chest, arms or hard parts of the head, not the floating ribs, the elbow in a way it might break or the nose or other soft areas of the face. getting hit hard is part of learning how to defend urself
  14. call the cops, if you hurt the guy while your mom is close, you might be putting her in danger as he will get more violent. DO NOT TRY TO FIGHT HIM, just get away, that is the best self defense Also, talk to ur mom about ways to get the man out of ur lives.
  15. hey, if you get mugged, defend yourself and you dont report it, he can make the allegation that you werent mugged. if you have to fight to defend yourself, contact the police and let them know what happened, before the other guy complains about you kicking his butt. also, beware of any mugger's friends hiding around, u dont want to be on the ground when they come to help him.
  16. if your martial arts depend on heavy kicking, get more comfortable clothes so it doesnt become a handicap for you. it sounds impossible to forget about retricting clothing when out in the real world, however, small changes could mean a safer life; baggier pants, just enough so u can move, comfortable shoes that wont slip, shirts that are not easy to grasp or get entagled in, etc.
  17. if you are surrounded, that counts as an agressive move towards you, so you dont need to wait for a punch or a kick to react. second, in a fight against more that one attacker, ur chances of winning go down, so be sure to attack just enough so u can get away. third, if you have to fight, fight dirty, against multiple opponents, stomps, roundhouse kicks to the legs, etc will work better for you. DO NOT TRY TO GRAPPLE with them. you grab one of them, the other will hit you. PS. and this is cruel, i know, but if you are fighting against girls, punching them on their breasts will hurt a LOT. self defense for ya
  18. front kick using the heel - keeping it from the waist down it will cause a lot of damage and it is very difficult to block. you can stomp with it, you can kick the legs, knees, abdomen. Also, it is great for following up with the hands for a combo.
  19. any kick can be made effective from the waist down. Anything above that COULD be used against you.
  20. Walk for an hour straight, it will slowly build your stamina(walk fast). eventually u will have enough strength to jog around for 5-10 minutes(in a couple of weeks) then, jog for longer set goals for walking and for jogging, if u want to drop weight, u are going to have to work that body. Also, u could look up a balanced diet to help u shred the weight and keep energy up.
  21. I might think you were the attacker if i see you kiaing and beating the crap out of someone (just as a joke)
  22. Hey, are you boricua? si,de pura cepa!
  23. 50/50 but if you are good with one, you can either develop it more, or train for the other. its your choice, really
