Hapkido question
karatekid1975 replied to Icetuete's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree with Thug. I did a bit (or was taught) some Combat Hapkido when I did TSD. It's doesn't have the "mental" side that traditional Hapkdio has. It's all defense stuff. -
TKD or Hapkido or Both?
karatekid1975 replied to sk0t's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
When I did Tang Soo Do, my instructor taught Combat Hapkido self defense stuff. -

My instructor is thinking about (well it's his dream, anyways) starting something like a "live-in" training program. I think it would be cool. I donno if he will have it year-round or just a few months at a time. He (my instructor) can prolly tell you more. -
Things NOT to say to your instructor...
karatekid1975 replied to Valithor's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Do NOT call Tae Kwan Do "karate" in front of my instructor. He doesn't like that too much. Oh boy, I'm going to get whacked up side the head for this. Good thing he has a good sense of humor LOL ..... I hope -

Ooops. I forgot to mention that we do WTF TKD black belt forms as well as the MDK forms after BB. -
I learned Kicho 1-3 (in TSD). It's the same as the Taikyoku, just different name. Monkey girl, I think you are referring to the Kicho forms as well.

It's ok, battousai16. The double post is taken care of I had my belt wack me in the eye once. I was doing a jump spinning kick (I forget which one), and my belt came up and whacked me in the eye. Then my ponytail whacked me in the other eye when I spun. OUCH. Needless to say I where shorter belts, and I wear my hair in a bun now LOL (well my hair is shoulder length now, so it's too short to whack me in the eye when I wear it in a ponytail).

During the week: Monday: off on Monday, but I still train. During the day, I'm lazy. I usually spend my time on KF. Tues thru Friday: Wake up a 6am. Shower, eat, and get ready for work. Get to work by 8. Work a 8 hour shift, then drive to class (except on wed and fri). I train for an hour during class, then practice on my own or private lessons afterwards for 15 min. to a half hour. Somewhere in there I eat again LOL. I usually fit in time on KF somewhere in there, also. Weekends: Sat, I work a 6 hour shift, so it's the same routine as during the week. I get home a 3:30. I do house work or yard work. shower again, and eat dinner (or we go out to eat). Then I workout (?). Depends how I feel. Sunday: I'm a bum LOL. Sunday is my lazy day LOL. That's my day with my honey. We spend the whole day doing nothing LOL. Except for today. We had to work on my car ...... ggggrrrrr

For white belt, we do kicho 1. We do the Taegeuk forms 1-8 for color belts. Then we do the Moo Duk Kwan forms, like Nahanchi (sp?) Bassai, ect after black belt. We also learn weapons forms after black belt, but I don't know the names of them. -
I have no choice to do two or three arts. My instructors did or still do many arts, and they mix it into what we learn. It keeps things interesting. I learn something new every class, even if it's not what we "have" to learn (for rank). I like the variaty (sp?). One thing I like about my school is that it's very open to everything. "Whatever works", basically (according one of my instructors LOL). It's definitely not your typical TKD school, and that's what I love about it
-
I usually don't have a problem since I do TKD, and we wear the pull-overs. But my belt doesn't like to stay tied sometimes. When sparring, I don't care. I let it fall off. I'm NOT going to be kicked in the teeth LOL. Or when we do grappling, my shirt comes out from under my belt (reason for sports bras or tanks LOL). But I keep going anyways. I don't stop in the middle of a match to fix my uniform. At the end, I'll turn and fix it, but not in the middle of a fight. My suggestion would be, fix your uniform later. If you are in the middle of a match, just keep going. You can "fix-up" afterwards.

You do have a point there, from the ground up

I agree with shotochem. I watched the UFC and I personally hated it. I'm not in MA for sport. I'm not a fan of grappling. But since my new school does do grappling, I have watched the UFC from a different view point. I have used techniques that those guys used (my personal fav is the arm bar ). It's not a total waste to watch it. Those guys do have good moves. But then again, it does have rules, and it is sport. It's just my personal opinion. I'm not bashing the UFC. It doesn't make it right or wrong, or make those arts bad. It's just the way I feel.

At least one event that scared the **** out of me! Yea, some drunk moron tried to rape me, but I went into morph-mode and kicked his butt LOL. It's still scared the crap outta me! When I think about it now, it was pretty funny, because I only had 8 months of martial arts training at the time -
taking multiple styles
karatekid1975 replied to Drunken Monkey's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The schools I attend/ed were all mixed. My TSD school taught a little of Muay Thai kickboxing, and Hapkido on top of TSD. My boyfriends school mixes TKD and Kung Fu. My school now mixes a little of Judo, Kali, and something else (don't remember). My instructors still actively train in other styles, so they mix stuff into their teaching style. It keeps things interesting When I did TSD, I also took jujitsu for three months (then I moved). I thought the two went well together. I would have done both for a very long time if I didn't move away. When I was still in my boyfriends school, I took Judo for a while (still I started my new dojang). I think they also went well together.
