Eeekkk. Mine have been bad LOL. I don't like tournies that much. I got 3rd in forms in my first one, but that's after starting over. I mixed two forms together. But I did the second time perfect. The same tourny, I missed on a simple kick while breaking. I nailed the 360 jumping roundhouse (some call it the tornato kick), but I missed the board competely with a side kick! I felt stupid LOL. My last one was good, though. I placed in all the stuff I did. All third, but it was good

Nick. I did a search on the zip you PMed me. You are in my old "stomping grounds" You are 15 miles from my old school That is so cool. If you decide to go there, it'll only take about 15 to 20 minutes to get there (it took me a half hour, but it was worth it). Here's the link http://www.imahq.net/East_Coast_Karate.htm The sight is pretty old, because I'm still in one of those pics from 2 and a half years ago LOL. But you can ask me or call there for more info. It might be too far for your dad, but it's a good school. Here's my search results for schools closer to you (within 5 miles): http://www.blackbelts.us/wkfwa This is one of the few with a web site. It's a wushu/kung fu school. Academy of Martial Arts Northeast http://www.northeastama.com/directions.php Shin Karate Institute (Tang Soo Do). Ata Black Belt Academy (Tae Kwon Do). Hamilton Martial Arts American Karate Institute Jade Dragon's Karate Institute (Tang Soo Do) Phoenix Academy of Martial Arts (Tang Soo Do) Hassetts Karate Club Everson's Karate & Kickboxing Institute There are a lot more schools near you, but these were the closest ones. You can look these up in your phone book for the numbers.

In TSD, I learned three at white belt, because the adults skipped yellow belt. In TKD (in my school anyways), we learn one. One kata per belt level.

I think my instructor is cute, (as long as he keeps his hair short), but I have a boyfriend (soon to be married). It doesn't hurt to look. Just don't touch. I don't recommend dating your instructor. I seen it. It doesn't work. Play it safe. Just train, and be happy at what you're looking at and what you are learning. Don't mix the two

I searched, but nothing came up. I'm from South Jersey originally, but I donno your area. You can PM me your Zip code and I'll search more. If you are in the south Jersey area, I know of a few good schools that you might like. Let me know

Unconventional breaks
karatekid1975 replied to Black Dragon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I saw one guy do a front roll into a axe kick brick break. Pretty cool stuff... I thought anyway. Then again, I'm no where near your level. I'm just a 4th gup. I also saw the ridge hand brick break. That was pretty awsome, too. But then again, the guy I saw was a 4th dan. He did all kinds of cool stuff that would take all day to name. -
I agree, Goju. But if you find more "ideal bunkai" for the situation, it might work. You have to find your own bunkai for each kata. Some people's opinions might not work for you, but yours will. Just study what you know, and go "deeper." A block is a strike, is a throw ..... The three months of shotokan I learned with my buddy Ann taught me that. I will always remember that Great stuff

I won't use neither for a street fight, but it's cool to learn. I might use a jump kick for a "suprise attack" but that's it. I would never use a flying kick, eventhough I know them. If the situation lets me, maybe. But it's still kinda risky. I would stay with the low effective kicks for a street fight. I do TKD, but I'm not stupid LOL.

I'll move this to the Intro section, so you will get more "welcomes" Welcome to KF

The beach I'm a beach bum. In the winter, my fav place is the dojang LOL.

My school does on occasion. More so with the higher ranks. I wish they'd do it more often. But I do try to figure out my own bunkai from forms. It can be very insteresting to find your own bunkai

Welcome -
I found mine on the interent (google search) before I moved to NY. But I ended up in another school, because my boyfriend liked it. But then I decided to attend this one later.

Front leg kicks are my fav The are quick, less telegraphed, and effective.

I thought about it, but never did. I sent one of their cards in for the subscription, but never got it

what are the differcene in tkd katas
karatekid1975 replied to killer13's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We do Taegueks and the WTF black belt forms (don't know their names), plus Moo Duk Kwan forms (Nahanchi, bassai sho and dai, Sip Soo, ect). -
We don't have formal testing before black. But we do our testing in three stages. All color belts learn basics, forms, one steps, counter grappling sets (defending against anything from grabs to chokes to bear hugs), joint locks, breakfalls/throws, ect (black belts learn the same, but advanced stuff. Plus weapons, defense against weapons, ect). Anyways, first tip (we have three, plus three mental tips) you do basics and breakfalls/throws. The second is one steps, counter grappling and/or joint locks. Third tip you do all the above, plus forms sparring/grappling and breaking. Our mental tips are usually an essay of some kind. A questionare on something. Usually why we do certian things, or on history of TKD, rules, meaning of forms, or something of that nature. No one mental tip is the same. We also have "mid rank" testing (for green and blue belts, which I have to do still). You basically do everything from white belt up to your current rank (which ever mid rank it is), plus free self defense (they will randomly attack you and you have to defend), sparring/grappling, breaking, and a lot of mental stuff.

I really don't have a fav. But it's mostly metal. I don't know where to put Linkin Park, Limp Bizket, or Disturbed, but they are my favs lately. Or Metallica (old school stuff) or a good Zepplin or Hendrix song to pump me up.

9 up to black. I don't know how many after that.

My school does rotating classes. It's cool. We get a little bit of everything all the time. I like it. But then again. I hardly miss a class
-
I also started helping out at green belt. But, like IAMA_chick said, I am an adult (I didn't start till I was 24). I also picked it (MA) up quick. So it depends on the person and their maturity. It also depends if they are good teachers. I knew a 12 year old that was fantastic at teaching, and an adult that really didn't care. So it depends.
