Is it safer in the Dojo???
karatekid1975 replied to shotochem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I work at my dojang, so I hope no one would do such a thing. No one has so far, that is. As far as injuries go, not to discourage you, but most of my injuries came from my previous two dojangs, not at home. Mainly my falt for being "stupid." Trying a kick I never did before, or height of a kick .... mainly pulled hammies, and bum knees, but it still doesn't stop me LOL. I do know the kicks I was previously injured with now, though. So that can prevent more injury LOL (plus proper stretching helps, also). -
Well I posted this on one forum so may well most it here!

How did I miss this intro. Sorry about that. Anyways, welcome to KF I remember the Kicho forms (my school now still does the first one) well. Fun aren't they Good luck on your test. Let us know how it went. -
Hey

I had to take a break this past summer. I switched dojangs 6 months before, and my brain was fried trying to catch up. I took almost two weeks off to re-group. I did work on my own on some stuff, so I didn't totally stop training. It helped a lot. I took time off a few times before that, but it was mostly injury related.

I feel there isn't a "wrong" way to do kata. It depends on how the instructor teaches it and/or the person doing them. I've been to two schools that do the same forms, but they are slightly different (which made it a little confusing at first). Some kata are done fast, others slow. When I learn a kata for the first time, I definitely go for technique, not speed. Then once I have it down, I'll speed it up a bit, but not to the point where, if you were in a tourny or something, the person judging/watching couldn't see your moves. Just my opinion

That's where I usually get my colds, is from the kids. Right now it's allergies, but I wouldn't doubt it if I get a cold from the kiddies in the next week or so LOL.

I lived in NJ about 30 to 40 minutes from the shore. Now I live in NY (Rochester area). They all freaked out because of the 30 mile an hour winds, canceled schools and such. I was thinking .... what ?!?!?!?!?! LOL. When I lived in NJ we had 100 mile an hour winds. We went swimming LOL.

We do anything from running to light (low) kicking, to leg jumps (different variaties of jumping over your partner's legs while moving), jumping jacks, push-ups, ect. Then we do stretching.
-
My last class was grappling and sparring. But the one before that was forms and bunkai. We do warm up and stretch, but that's not the exciting part LOL.

Thanks Sai

I was going to say Shotokan, Judo, or jujitsu would fit you well. But it's totally up to you. If you like something other than what has been named, go for it. I was NOT flexible (couldn't even reach my toes) when I started. In 2 and 1/2 years of training, I can do a split So it's totally up to you on how hard you want to work on flexibilty, ect. At three years of training, I bored with splits LOL. Go figure You really don't need the flexibility to be good at any art. Hard work is what matters most

Limited and Unsure
karatekid1975 replied to Seraph's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
stl_karateka gave sound advice Some schools mix styles (mine for example). So you could get the best of both worlds (grappling and stand-up fighting). I used to hate grappling (when I did TSD), but now I enjoy it. So whatever you pick, make the best of it -

That's my job in my school LOL. I get paid to clean .... well not just me. Everyone that works during "the after school program" before the kids start filing in.

How to deal with the kids class troublemaker?
karatekid1975 replied to OrenJuMok's topic in Instructors and School Owners
OrenJuMok, I'm having the same problem, except there are two of them ....... eeeekkkkkk. I can't seem to "punish" the one. He loves the attention no matter what it is ..... sheesh. The head instructor of the kids class tried separating him, or sending him to the Master instructor's class, but he drove him nuts LOL. -
That reminds me. When I lost my job, my TSD instructor let me clean the school to pay for lessons.

Things NOT to say to your instructor...
karatekid1975 replied to Valithor's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I found out that if you are employed by your instructor and ask a question, you are the "ginny pig" during class LOL. -
