  1. LOL. He is a tall skinny guy. He isn't a very good uki I threw my nephew with no problem, and he outways the tall guy by a good 50 pounds (but my nephew is shorter ... 5'10). So I'm thinking that he didn't want to be thrown. Oh well LOL.
  2. I agree. My instructor just opened another school. He already had the curriculum set from the main school, so that was easy But yea, make sure you have curriculum for each rank and so forth already set. Equipment helps, too. You won't need much at first (my instructor stole some of ours to lend to the new school LOL). Maybe a couple of targets, a mat, things like that. My instructor also started out at the YMCA club. I think that would be a good place to start. It's cheap, and you can put your mind on teaching. Once you get enough students, you can move to a building of your own.
  3. I need help with throwing taller people LOL. I'm 5'8 and I was trying to throw someone that is 6' tonight and it wasn't working. It should be easy since he is taller and I really don't have to "get under" his center of gravity (for a hip throw). But yet I can throw people who are the same height or shorter than me. Weird.
  4. I'm having "one of those nights" a lot lately. Stuff I done hundreds of times just "poof" .... gone. Major brain fart. Might be because I'm testing for blue next week .... stress maybe? *sighs* But yet, we were doing throws tonight, and I just learned this one throw, and I did it perfect .... go figure
  5. Same here, IAMA_chick. We learn Bassai sho, and dai for second dan.
  6. The same goes for my school.
  7. I delayed testing twice (this being the second time). My instructor pretty much leaves it up to us. There is tip testing every month, and everyone is allowed to test (if they meet the requirements). But not everyone does. They either backout or they are not ready. My instructor is really cool about it.
  8. Yea, I heard. My boyfriend still goes to the main school. The new school will be done sometime next month, I heard. I saw it today, (drove by it). It looks as if it's getting there. You must go to Mr. Child's (sp?) school then.
  9. My fav kick (actually the spinning hook kick is my best). You have to turn your hip into it. It's really hard for me to expain. I have to show you. I need to know if you are trying the regular hook kick or the spinning version. The spinning one has more power, because of the motion going into it. But you have three months of training, so don't let it get you down. It took me a long time to get this kick right. Just keep practicing
  10. LOL. I stole my screen name from the movie (1st one). I was looking for a new screen name and I was watching Karate Kid 1 for the 100th time, so I said, "hey that works" LOL Anyways, I still like the movies. They don't play Karate Kid 3 much. I liked that one. And yes, Mr. Miyagi is the man.
  11. I'm sorry to do this, but I have to close this thread. It got way off topic and very argumentive. Sorry folks
  12. My school is also like this
  13. I was able to keep my rank. BUT I decided to drop rank. There was sooooo much more to learn than my other school. So, for me, if I dropped ranks, it would be easier to learn stuff the right way, instead of having a "crash course" on everything and rushing through it. That's just me, though.
  14. My school is every three months. But I'm not going to test (my choice) for my blue. I'm not ready. But you are the other way around. So, I would ask your instructor. Explain to him/her how you feel, and ask if you can test.
  15. I have really good links at home, but I'm at work. I'll try to explain it till I can get home LOL. TSD, in my opinion, is good for self defense. The way I learned it, we did a lot of "real life" situation stuff, but that could vary from school to school. I have used it (a step sparring combo no less) to defend myself in real life. It definitely keeps/can get you in shape. It is a good workout. You will have the fun of self defense, AND a lot of jump kicks! Plus other things of course, but they were my favs. When I get home, I'll post some links
  16. Welcome
  17. I have a cat named Smokey, and a dog that looks like a dingo named Chipper. They are both mutts LOL. But they are very loyal and sweet animals. Both are spoiled
  18. HEY! LOL. Well, we will. I told your instructor I will visit him soon .... I hope. He's my bud.
  19. Sorry, this is a little off topic (kicking myself for it as we speak LOL). TKDShoujo, do you go to Hiedi's school? Just wondering. I used to go to the main school. I asked because of the way you explained the forms.
  20. I had no choice to switch from TSD to TKD. I moved And I had to do some adjustment. Eventhough they are both Korean arts, they are different. TSD is more "karate-like" (well the way I was taught anyways). For example: the punches are different. I learned not to extend my arm all the way (like someone said, it is easy for someone to apply a joint lock on a straight arm). TKD, I have to have a straight arm. Things like that. It might be minor stuff, but if you take two arts (that are similar) it could get confusing. If they are two totally different arts, I don't see a problem with it.
  21. Me too. I started at 24. I turned 25 shortly after. Now I'm 28.
  22. robodjs, what area (county) do you live in NY? I'm from upstate NY. I could look up a few places for you if I knew the area.
  23. Welcome to KF
  24. Look in your phone book to see what's available. Then "browse" those schools to see what you like. You can't go by style. When I moved to NY, I wanted to stay with Tang Soo Do, but there were no TSD schools here. I had to go with a school that was good. It also happened to be a school that was similar (the one I attend now). I didn't know it at the time, but I knew it was a good school, so I stayed with it. This was after I got stuck in a McDojang, then I came here. You have to seek a good instructor, not style. I know my instructor is good. So I stick with my school. You have to look for the same
