  1. In Burlington county (South Jersey). Sorry that I didn't respond sooner.
  2. Yes, there is. We have a "search" at the top right of this page (any page here really). Just click on that and type in competition. It should come up with a whole lot of threads Welcome to KF
  3. I wish I seen this thread sooner. I needed help on double kicks too Anyways, I was trying to learn this kick for a while, and I was having a lot of trouble, also. But like Bretty101 said, they are 45 degree roundhouses, not full roundhouses, which I was trying to do and couldn't get the rotation Soon as I tried the 45's, both kicks came out pretty good. As far as moving forward: it's ok as long as you are using this kick in sparring and your partner is "running" (backwards). If you are using it as a fake (first leg "fakes" the first roundhouse and the second one lands), moving forward might be a problem. Try to "hop" straight up. Not too high, but just enough to throw the first kick. I hope this helped (and made sense LOL).
  4. Can you sqeeze in running? Some schools make the BB's run for their test. If your school is like mine, we have to spar/grapple (I forget how many matches, but it's pretty intense). So I would work on endurance. Working on forms everyday is good too. What my boyfriend did before he tested for his brown was, he picked one form to work on for a week (that includes technique, ect), then he'd move on to the next one. When he got close to his test, he'd run through all of them every other day. Plus I'd help him by calling out a form in random order (in order was too easy for him).
  5. I don't think it's a problem when an instructor teaches one art mainly and then mixes a few others in as long as there is a strong base. Like my instructor does. He mainy teaches TKD, but mixes others in. He teaches a more well rounded version of TKD because of it.
  6. Ad, it's good that you want to go to college. To prepare for running a MA school, take something along the lines of business management. I work for my instructor. He knows that I'd like to have my own school one day. He is basically teaching me the "ins and outs" of running a school. We chat about it all the time. I am also going to take up small business management to help me run my future school. Maybe someday you could work for your instructor, if possible. It is good training, and a great place to start.
  7. I have the same problem. I don't sweat under the arms, but my face, back and chest sweat a lot. My uniform top is soaked after a good workout. I tried the under shirt thing ..... WAY too hot. Usually I just wear a sports bra (or tank top) underneath my uniform now. That cuts down on the sweating. I also think it's genetic, because my nephew has the same problem.
  8. Must be nice to wake up at noon ..... *karatekid crashes right about now (12:30 am ..... yes I'm getting old ...... late nights don't exist anymore, but late mornings do ... when I can LOL)* good night.
  9. Our style is mixed with Kali (and Judo), so it adds more of a defensive style against weapons. I like it Good hybrid style of TKD.
  10. It's three to six years at my school. Adults can make it within three years IF they get permission and they are good enough.
  11. Lots of throws, joint locks, self defense, stand-up grappling, and ground fighting (besides forms and one steps). How about you?
  12. Patrick, yes I was one, but I figured you were doing something. So no harm done
  13. For color belts, it's about three months till we get to probationary (we call it provisional) black. You stay there anywhere from 5 to 9 months. Then you have to get permission for a "mock black belt test" before the actual thing. If you fail the mock test, you don't test for black till the next BB test. That can be for an additional three months or so. Black belts have to wait for a certain period of time before they test again. 1st dan waits 2 years to test for 2nd. 2nd dans wait 3 years to test for 3rd, ect. Our ranks go: white, yellow (half white half yellow), gold, orange, green, purple, blue, brown, red, provisional black, then black.
  14. We learn staff, knife and sword. But most of our training is defenses against weapons. Mostly knife, short staff, and gun (and empty hand defenses, of course).
  15. Hiya, and welcome. I used to live in NJ
  16. My boyfriend's school has a contract where it can be broken for medical reasons (or moving). This one girl hurt her knee twice, and she couldn't take TKD anymore, and had to quit. I think she got a doctors note or something, and got out of the contract.
  17. I think I have seen that one before That's a cool drill.
  18. I can agree with Kai_Hwarang's post to a certain extent. We do learn most of what was said at my school. I was in a self defense situation before. He attacked first (grabbed me in a headlock). I used just enough force so that the attacker was no longer a threat. I didn't kill him, or anything like that. If he had a weapon, however (I didn't see one anyways), I think I would have done a lot more damage. I also helped a friend that was getting "threatened" by a drunk (he was bartending at the time). The drunk swung at him after he was told to leave. I grabbed his arm in a joint lock and threw him out. So it really depends on the situation.
  19. My instructor's instuctor is in Ohio. We are in NY. He trains on his own. If he has a guestion, he calls his instructor. He also travels to train with him often. My instructor is very good, so I don't see a problem with being in another state. But then again, he is a 5th dan.
  20. I agree. It's better to finish late than look like an idiot trying to "make things up" to full class time
  21. Good suggestion, shortstick. I just started doing that. I wrote down all the drills my school does, plus all the ones mentioned here. I also started to write down a "lesson plan" (what I plan on doing during the class). The first time going in there "cold," I felt like an idiot not knowing what to do (except for the main lesson). I wrote everything down from the time they bow in to the time they leave (including games/drills).
  22. I had trouble with this one. Sorry. I did find a "phone book" like listing page for the Ontario area: http://listingsca.com/Ontario/Toronto-Region/Sports_and_Recreation/Martial/index.asp You can pick the area you want at the top of the page, and it'll give you a list of schools there. I hope this helps EDIT: hehehehe Doug beat me to it LOL. He is the perfect guy to ask. I should have thought of that LOL
