  1. Don't turn this into an Art vs Art thing. It's about a show with bad taste, not a bad martial art (There's no such thing .... just bad teachers and/or students). Keep it on the topic, Folks Thanks.
  2. Thanks And I will
  3. Congrads Our Demo is also coming up (we finally got a date for the big one at a local high school). I can't wait Keep us updated on how it goes.
  4. Thanks G95 And I agree with you, also. I enjoy teaching. I also make it fun for the younger students while they learn, and they love it. I got smiles from parents while I was teaching their kids, so I guess I'm doing something right If you have the ability to teach, rank shouldn't matter (unless you wanna open a school LOL). Some people might look at my rank and snicker. But I tell them, don't let my rank fool you
  5. Yea, they are pretty much the same. Maybe slightly different, but not much. So, all I do is repeat the first half? That's easy enough More like shorin-ryu than isshin ryu, in that the first step goes to the right. After the double punch to the left, it pretty much repeats itself in mirror image Cool I just have remember after the double punch it does LOL Thanks
  6. My black belt paper is about the same exact thing. I'm testing at the end of spring and I'm writing my paper early. Do you mind if I get stuff from this thread also? Anyways, my info: Laurie S, 28 (will be 29 next month), from New Jersey (but live in New York). I joined my Tang Soo Do dojang in New Jersey after I realized I needed to learn self defense for a job I had (Security Police). Before I started martial arts, I had low self esteem/confidence, ect. Tang Soo Do (well MA in general) changed that. It's not just the physical stuff I learn, but the mental stuff that became more important. I also trained there 4 to 5 days a week. I was hooked. I reached 5th gup in TSD before I moved. Now I do TKD (after I moved). My instructor now reminds me of my TSD instructor. He is big into the mental stuff as well as the physical. He also teaches the same way. He is very knowledgeable about MA. I learn something new everyday, even about something or technique that I "thought" I knew. I'm currently 3rd gup and instructor in training (will be testing for certified instructor in summer after getting my BB .... hopfelly ). Martial arts not only physically changed me, but mentally.
  7. It depends on the technique. Front kicks are equal on both sides. Right leg roundhouse, right leg side kicks, and left leg spin kicks (for some odd reason ..... I'm a righty). Jointlocks are equal. Grappling: usually the right side for armbars, ect. Chokes: right side. Takedowns: both sides equal. Throws: right side. Hand techniques: my punches stink period LOL. Ridge hands, knife hand strikes, blocks, ect are all stronger on my right (I break with my right hand for that reason). I do try to practice more with my weak side more, but sometimes it just doesn't wanna work LOL.
  8. hehehehehe Lets get him, Monkeygirl :pony:
  9. Last week. Thanks Monkeygirl is right. It really depends on your instructor/system rules. But even that didn't matter with me. My instructor saw that I can teach. I started by helping fellow students learn their new forms. I guess my instructor saw me and liked how I taught. In my old school, I was also asked to assist in the master instructors beginners classes (at green belt 5th gup/kyu). If you are good at helping fellow students, your instructor will pick up on it.
  10. Yea, they are pretty much the same. Maybe slightly different, but not much. So, all I do is repeat the first half? That's easy enough
  11. I'm a brown belt (3rd gup). I help teach now (plus YMCA kids). BUT I'm also a 28 (almost 29) year old adult, and I've been training for a few years. In my school it is "supposed" to be black belt. But I've been teaching or "assisting" for years, and my instructor realized I can teach. Belt rank doesn't make the teacher. I seen yellow belts that teach better than some 2nd dans or above. So just keep training hard and helping other students. If you are ment to teach, it will show
  12. Naihanchi I'm not supposed to know it yet, but I know one half way through hehehehe. I like Bassai, too (don't know that one yet). My instructor gave us a taste of Sip Soo tonight. That was fun. Why I'm learning higher belt forms *shrugs* They are more fun LOL. But my fav form of all time (for color belts) is pyung ahn ee dan.
  13. Same here. My school isn't straight TKD. Now that I'm an assistant instructor (I get private lessons as well as regular classes, and my instructor is "hard core" with lessons), I'm being advanced faster. BUT that doesn't mean I'll test when I'm asked to (I'm picky LOL). It took me 3 years to get my brown belt (3rd gup), once because of moving, the rest cause I wasn't ready (or so I thought).
  14. I thought it was going to be more scientific, also. When they talked about how a martial artist can withstand a blow, that was interesting. They had a bit on how breaking (my fav thing to do) is done, too. They had about 10 or 15 minutes of scientific stuff, which was interesting. The rest was about that guy. I agree with the basics thing. If you don't gott'em, the flash is crap. I try to learn the flashy kicks at times, but if I can't do one, I go back to the basics and figure out why
  15. I always bought light weight. They're cooler, and compfy. BUT I bought a middle weight two months ago, and since my dojang teaches throws and grappling, I seem to like the middle weight better. For normal TKD related classes, I wear the light weight, still.
  16. TKDLadyInSC, don't give up. Just keep plugging at it. The lady above I talked about has a heart of gold. I also have knee problems, but I am trying to strengthen them before they get worse. After one class of doing grappling and/or throws, my knees hurt like heck. But my instructor gave me this stuff (chinese meds) that seems to help. The lettering is in Chinese, but I will ask my isntructor what it is for you. Also, did you ever try a physical therapist that specializes in sports therapy? This might help after your surgery.
  17. Turkey, broccoli and cheese sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, apple pie, cookies, and coffee with irish cream and whipped cream for desert. Oh and beer. I had everything but the turkey (I'm vetetarian)
  18. In my school/org, there is a seperate test to get certified. The black belts can teach without it, but if they decide to teach somewhere else they will need it (depends on the school, that is). I have two tests coming up in spring. My BB test AND my teaching cert test. But I don't know how they go about staying certified. That would be a good question to ask my instructor
  19. LOL. I have bad knees, but it doesn't stop me (except when they ache really bad). Anyways, in my boyfriend's school (where I used to train), there is a lady in a wheelchair. She doesn't get any special treatment, except the way she trains. I used to teach her stuff like defenses and joint locks that would work for her or modify the ones the school taught. She is smart, so she picked them up quick. She can't kick, so the instructor made up hand techniques to replace the kicking techniques in forms. I learned the forms her way, so I could help her. But she would know if I did something wrong with my kicks (if I asked her to help me). Just because she couldn't kick, doesn't mean she didn't know how to in her mind. She has a great attention to detail.
  20. I'd go with Proforce. When I started MA, I got a Proforce uniform and I still have it. It's three years old. It's a little lighter than it used to be, but it's still holding strong. I didn't like Centery for the longest time. Their uniforms used to shrink. For some reason, they changed the fabric (prolly cause they got a lot of complaints). I bought one for the heck of it, and I like it now. It's middle weight, great for throws, and it didn't shrink one bit (I've had it for two months now).
  21. Seems ok to me. The prices for that area are about $80 to $100, so you would be getting a good price. Then again, like Shorinryu Sensei said, I don't know anything about the style, so I'm just going on price and the pictures. But you would have to meet with the instructors, check out/take a few classes and judge for yourself.
  22. The problem my dojang has is the name is just LOOOOONG LOL. I told my instructor I just wish he picked a shorter name for the ones who answer the phones ..... me (and the lady that actually does the office work .... I feel sorry for her) LOL. She gets letters/bills in the mail, and most of them couldn't fit the whole name on the label (unless it was hand written).
  23. Welcome to KF
  24. I'm vegetarian. Anyways, Happy Thanksgiving, all. If ya drink during the big game on Thanksgiving, don't drive
  25. LOL. I like your sig, treebranch. That is the perfect answer
