Yes, I moved it But no harm done Welcome to the forums. Pull up a chair and chat a way -
Thanks Hiedi Hehehehehe. Maybe you can pass them on (secrets) LOL I will train at your dojang every other saturday starting at the end of the month. I may get in trouble, but at this point, I don't care. Yea, it's true. They make you wait to learn the good self defense stuff. I've seen some of it, and I learned some of it in TSD. They are making me wait to learn stuff I already know. I'm sure you will know most of it, because of your experience in TKD. It's a bit frustrating. Maybe it's just me .... I donno. But they have lost students at my dojang. That can't be a good sign.

I don't mind, Sub. No we live together. But we work different hours. He works first shift, I work second. We don't see each other except when I get home, and he's ready for bed, because he gets up early. The only two days off that I have is monday and thursday, which is class nights. We spend time together on saturdays (after I get back from Judo), but only for a few hours. Heidi, yes you are right. He is passionate about the "olympics." The problem is, most of us aren't. A few are, but most are there for a totally different reason. For me, that is self defense. I could care less about the "olympic style" sparring matches. He and Mr. C has been pushing me to do it, but I'm not in it for sport. Yea, I can hold my own in sparring, but it's because I have to, not because I like it. And he has been talking about change since I started. I guess I am a little frustrated because I haven't seen any changes. I don't know how Mr. Laftler runs his school, but here it's weird. You go to the black belt classes here. That might be different also, but you are "not allowed" to say anything that goes on in it. I do train hard, though. I always work on technique, step sparring, and self defense stuff with my other half. I'm big on technique like Mr. Laftler Anyways, we are probably confusing everyone because we are talking about stuff here that they don't know about hehehehehe

I wanted to bring this back up again. I re-read Sub's last post. Dude, you were so right. I did stay at the McDojang. I'm still not happy. Judo has been fun, though. 3 classes isn't much (Judo is only once a week), but I learned more there than I have in TKD as far as self defense related stuff. I was driving passed the good dojang I found and my heart just sank I wish I did go. I'm stuck in a "rut" again. I was thinking about quiting TKD all together. Just do Judo for now. I know I thought about that because I am frustrated. I feel like I'm "stuck" there (the Mcdojang).

Self Defense -- Are One Steps Enough?

Self Defense -- Are One Steps Enough?
karatekid1975 replied to tkdwolf's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
No, I don't think one-steps are enough. Not the way they are taught in my dojang. I just learned one that you do three hand techniques and switch stance all three times. To me, that isn't realistic. The hand techniques used are cool (punch, punch, palm heel strike), but I think if we stayed in more of a "natural back stance," and fire off the hand techniques quickly, it would be better. Specially if they concentrate more on using "hip" than trying to switch stance all the time. One steps aren't made to be "self defense." They teach distance and all (so I'm told). But I feel they should, at least, be a bit more realistic. -
At home I do. My instructors don't let us train to music But I do listen to music on the way to get me "pumped." Shortstick, good choice in music This week, I will be listening to Limp Bizket's "Break Stuff" on the way to class, because it's breaking week Man, I already can't wait till monday

I should have tested in October (this coming October) for my black belt in Tang Soo Do But I moved and changed to TKD. Now I know I would have chickened out on that test! I'm no where near ready. -
Hapkido vs Combat Hapkido
karatekid1975 replied to craknek's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
From what you said, I would advise you learn traditional Hapkido. There shouldn't be any need to learn TKD first, though. Unless the instructor you spoke to, teaches both TKD and Hapkido together (mixed not seperate). Combat Hapkido doesn't have the "tradition." I'm not "dissing" it because I have learned it along side TSD. But it's mainly just techniques. It doesn't have the "mental" part of Hapkido. It is good self defense just the same, though. Both types of Hapkido are amazing arts. But if you are like me, I like the "mental" part of Hapkido as well as the techniques. Watch classes at both schools. And take a class or two at both schools. See which one you like better -
I don't advice learning from books and videos either, unless you have some background and/or understanding of basics. I would try a YMCA. Most MA prgrams there are dirt cheap, and once a week. I pay only $20 every six weeks for Judo. I do believe that they are good videos out there that could help, though. But it takes time to hunt them out. Once you find one that shows proper technique and explain them well, like omnifinite said, when you "feel" the technique, you know you did it right But that also takes practice.

Good idea, Doug. Well, my sig says it all. I'm now a blue belt in TKD. I go for high blue at the end of the month (March). -
TKD: The Practitioner's Club
karatekid1975 replied to Maestro's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Me, too. I love forms. I am doing Taeguk 5, but my fav (in TKD) so far is taeguk 4. Like Monkeygirl, I like to do a well-done form I'm big on technique, so when I do a form and nail the techniques, that is the biggest rush I try to be sharp and make my techniques "snap." It's the coolest feeling -
I thought I posted in this thread before. Guess not ...... Anyways, when I did Tang Soo Do, I trained alone. My parents supported me, but didn't train. My sister and brother came to my classes before. My sister almost joined to do kickboxing end of it, but chickened out. It was hard not having someone in the family to practice with, so I trained 4 to 5 days a week. My honey used to watch me in class. He was envious, because he wanted to do it, too. So when we moved to NY, we hunted for a dojang. We both train together now in TKD, and workout a lot at home. I do Judo alone.

I agree. If you have to learn alone, the books Sub mentioned are great. I have two of them. I would have to agree that video would be the way to go also. If you want to try Tang Soo Do, C.S. Kim's videos are really good. He doesn't talk much on them, but they sure show proper techniques There are also good videos on different arts that the instructor explains everything on the tape. Those ones you should hunt for.

Turning your back doing a technique
karatekid1975 replied to Adonnis's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I never thought about it really. But if I think about it, I don't even turn my back in sparring. For throws (Judo) yes, but not sparring (TKD). -
I seen a really funny one, but it's not "clean" enough to put on here. Yipes!
