  1. I love the fancy kicks But, like I have said before on this forum, I'd be dumb to try it in a real fight. I sometimes do the "spinning" kicks during sparring, but I wouldn't try a 540 or anything. But I'm also not a beginner. I know the difference between "real" and not. I do learn the fancy kicks, but its all outta fun. I know they won't work in a real fight. I know I'd rather use a well-placed side kick (and I have) in a real fight. As for "showing off," I do on occasion, but mainly to "deflate" egos that some higher rankers may have. Other than that, I hate show-offs also.
  2. Update: I talked to the YMCA folks today. I am checkin out Judo classes this weekend. If I like what I see, I'll be starting on the 15th. Woohooo!!! I can't wait!
  3. I just talked with my local YMCA. I'm checkin the class itself out this saturday, and to speak with the instructor. As a non Y member, I'd pay $45 for six weeks. But I plan on joining the Y itself so I can start swimming, too. And members only pay $20 for six weeks Woohoooo!!! If I like the class and instructor, I'll be starting Judo on the 15th
  4. I'm about to join a YMCA to do Judo. I am going to talk with them tomorrow. I like TKD, but I think Judo will help with the grappling, throwing and joint locking area that my TKD school "lacks". I think it will be a good mix. I'll keep you updated on how it goes
  5. juchoom sogi is Korean for horse stance. But I would have to go "lookin" for Korean for "bend your knees."
  6. What is kibadatchi? Sorry, I'm a Korean stylist, so I have no clue. But once I know, I'll look it up for you.
  7. I didn't want to, but I had to change styles. I moved. No TSD dojangs here But someday, I will return to the TSD fold Tang Soo!
  8. John G wrote: That's right. The new WTF rules are, if your opponent blocks a kick, but you still move them, you still get the point. But the kick has to be powerful enough to knock them back, or make the "blocker" hit themselves. Like if you kick them, they block, and you make their arm it their own vest, you get the point. Kinda hard to explain. But, yea, your are right. Eventhough I have "moved" my opponents with front leg kicks.
  9. I do WTF, and I'm a front leg kicker. Less power? For some people, but not I I guess it's because I trained in TSD first and my TSD instructor trained both back leg and front leg kicks. I just happened to be better at front leg kicks, so I started to spar like that. Now I spar and kick with my front leg without thinking about it.
  10. Amen, Jason. Dang! You make me miss TSD (which I do anyway ) Tang Soo!
  11. I did do Moo Duk Kwan TKD for a month, I do WTF TKD still (long story). I studied both TSD MDK and WTF TKD, so I can see some MDK influence in WTF style forms. Taeguk 5 starts out like pyung ahn cho dan. Taeguk 4 has pieces of pyung ahn ee dan in it. One of the higher taeguk forms reminded me of Bassai (I forget which one off hand). Ok, I'm rambling. I just got done class, and I noticed this stuff in class. I'll shut up now LOL.
  12. Thanks all. Sub, me lethal??? No way. I'm just a rookie ..... seriously. I've only been training in MA for 2 and a half years. Maybe in a few years, I'll be somewhat lethal LOL.
  13. This is a good one, also: http://www.shotokankata.com/ Lotta good kata info, including pics of moves and bunkai.
  14. We have something in common, then I also learned the same thing with one of my instructors. I can talk to him about anything, even to gripe about the school, or just "vent." He'll listen, then we talk it over. I didn't like him at first, but I found out that he is a pretty nice, and understanding fellow. I also found out that he is the "main man" of the school, not the master instructor. Oh well. go figure
  15. americankarategal, I'm going a little off topic, but you taught me something. I gripe about my dojang (too expensive mainly), but I know what my art is, and I know the history, my instructor's instructor, ect. After you started this thread, I spoke to one of the instructors, and he was very open about these things. I checked on his answers and, my school is legit. Instead of griping about the price, I should look at other stuff. No, I don't agree with some of the stuff they teach (or why we wait so long to learn good self defense), but I never asked why. I found out that my master instructor is very big on drilling the basics. Which isn't a bad thing for beginners. I was so close-minded that I didn't see that. Maybe all that stuff I said in other threads was a result of me, not them. I donno, but I will shut my mouth for now on, and "watch and ask questions" more often. I should stop "assuming" things. Anyways, I really hope you find a good dojo. You sound like someone who loves what you do, so you deserve something better. Oh and thanks for this "lesson"
  16. Thanks for the advice I'm going to give the YMCA a call and find out when the judo classes are. I'll keep you all updated Thanks again all, for your help.
  17. I agree with kchenault. Kicking muscles have a lot to do with it, but I am a strong believer in technique. You can have all the muscle you want, but if you don't have proper technique (accuracy = speed= power type thing), you couldn't break a one inch board. Anyways, the hip muscles have a lot to do with power, and the way you use the hip in the kick. I am female, but I can kick harder than some of the guys in class. Not because I have huge muscles, but I always work on technique. Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling. I'm sick and I just got up from a nap. I couldn't kick an ant right now LOL ...... *need coffee*
  18. I can give you sites that have kata on them. I'm sure, since you use Japanese term, the Japanese stylist can help you find sites that have Japanese term. I have a few in my bookmarks (for katas that is). Speaking of Japanese term, since your instructor uses them, I would guess he came from a Japanese style. So I will give you a few sites to look at. Lemme know if you see anything you reconize. Here's a good one. This one taught me a lot about Shotokan. It has kata, teckniques, bunkai, ect: http://www.shotokankata.com/ Click "take the tour" link at the bottom. Here's a Shorin-ryu site. Katas are similar: http://www.shorinryu.dk/html/indexe.htm Click on "kata" on the left. Both these sites have a lot of info. These would be a good place to start. Also check out this site: http://www.martialinfo.com/MartialMainFrame.htm This site has boat loads of info on many many styles. Scroll down till you see "styles" on the left. You can research many styles from this site (I have). Plus it has many great links. I hope this helps
  19. I would have to say my TSD instructor. He was tough, drilled proper technique, big on self defense, ect, but yet he was/is a friend. I was scared of him on the dojang floor. But when he was in street clothes hangin out after class, he would BS about anything, crack jokes, and talk to you like a person. Very nice guy. If you had a problem, he would talk to you privately, and not yell at you during class (unless it was to push you to do better during class).
  20. americankarategal, You said in an earlier post that your instructor was big into technique and forms (kata). An easy way to find out what style he studied is by the kata. What are the names of your kata? I don't do American Karate, but I know enough about other styles to pin-point what style has what kata. I dabbled in other arts, study/ied two, and I do a lot of research. I can help some if you'd like
  21. The one fight was good (The first one). But I didn't watch much of the kickboxing. I was working on my form between breaking shows We taped two and a half hours of breaking. The one at 11:00pm was a bonus. It wasn't advertised. They showed one from 1999. It was cool. Oldie but goodie. I'm not much of a power breaking fan (I like creative breaking, which they did show ), but my boyfriend and I had bets going LOL. That guy Mr. Fields is awsome, and the guy Chip something. He's blind in one eye. I hope they show forms next time
  22. Sub, thanks man I know, and agree with you, but I'm willing give it a try for him
  23. Mr. Clark, That was un-called for. I, for one, got him into the traditional arts. I have no desire to change my style, or my boyfriend. For another thing, we do not accept your type of attitude on this board. We do not allow "flame-wars" or "style bashing." You are entitled to your opinion, but you were out of line. If you wish to start a "flame-war," there are the rec.martial arts boards. Enjoy
  24. Ok, all. Don't turn this into an arguement. Yes, I have heard of BJJ, but I never done it, so I can't say anything about it. I was asking for advice about dojangs and how it would affect my relationship, not styles. Please try to keep on the subject. Anyways, thanks Kickchick I knew you would have good advice. Yes, we do have a strong relationship. That's why I decided to cross-train and still train with him. Maybe I am a sucker for love hehehehehehe. But I believe it will work I also "voiced my opinions" to my instructor (about the self defense, ect). Suprisingly, he totally understood. I was shocked. They are changing stuff in the dojang, so I will give them another chance. I'll keep you posted
  25. G, there will be power breaking/creative on, I think. But yea, I agree. I'd love to see a beautifully performed traditional form.
