  1. I don't tell strangers. But my friends (most of them do MA's of some sort, anyways), and family know. My boss knows cause her cousin is my old instructor.
  2. Ok, I'm confused, too. Can you specify on what you are stating? Just don't turn this into a "karate sucks" flame war Thanks.
  3. I was always told to give three warnings, and loud enough for witnesses to hear. If he didn't stop I would have applied a finger lock. If he tried to get out of that, and the more he struggled, the worse the pain gets But I think in a crowded place where his buddies could be lurking, it was the right thing to wait for security to take care of it.
  4. I live in upstate NY and it's still chilly here, also *does the summer pow wow dance* I hate cold, too. Welcome to the forums
  5. I do Tae Kwon Do, too, but I'm fat Well, not THAT fat. But I could lose some weight also. I think I eat to much "junk." I'm not a sweet eater, so that's not the problem. It's chips and things like that. I used to eat a lot of rice, but I cut that back. Any advice?
  6. This is NOT a TKD vs (insert style here) thread. Stick to the topic. Thanks. Very good work, by the way, on the video
  7. I started at 24. Turned 25 three months later. Now I'm 28. Going on three years in October
  8. Martial Info has a link for schools outside the US. Click on the "Looking for a school near you" link. When the map pops up, scroll to the bottom. It says "other countries." Try it. It might help
  9. Here's another thread just like this one: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=973 Mine is on my sig.
  10. I was taught Muay Thai kicks when I did TSD. I would rather use them in a real situation. I'm just getting frustrated with people saying that TKD is all high kicking. In a REAL TKD school, it's not. Come to my dojang and you'll see.
  11. Yes, I agree with you both. I'm not there for rank. I'm there to learn. I have a feeling he is getting hung up on the rank thing at his school. So be it. That's him, not me.
  12. There is more to TKD than fancy kicks (except in the McDojangs). In my school, we might learn them, but we also learn when NOT to use them. We also learn self defense .... OMG!! Did I just put TKD and self defense together?!?!?!?!?!?! ....... Yes I did, and it's true. When we practice self defense, high kicks are excluded
  13. Yes, that's my point I was trying to make to my boyfriend. He heard Master Kuek say that many times, but now it's going over his head .....ggggrrrrrr. The thing I don't get is we are in different schools now, and he is somehow trying to tell me what to do. He wanted me to stay at 4th gup. BUT he doesn't really know all the stuff we have to know for each rank. He thinks it's just forms, step sparring, and sparring. No it isn't. We have to know joint locks, throws, counters, ect on top of that. Each rank you learn a few of each and they get harder the higher you get. Oh well. He can't change my mind, because I feel good about it.
  14. I did that with a side kick. Bad timing and poor distance, like you, and OUCH! I didn't hurt mine that bad. I stayed away from training for a week. Iced it and soaked in hot water. I wore a knee brace for about two weeks in training, but I didn't use that leg for kicking drills or anything. I guess mine was a minor injury, cause it healed pretty fast.
  15. I have two links that might help: https://www.martialinfo.com This one is useful because you can look up a school, then reseach the style. Just click the above link, then click on "Looking for a school near you" link on the left. Then the state, then town (or near by town). or http://www.bushido.us/schools.cfm Just click on the link, then type in your town and zip. It also has a style directory. I hope this helps
  16. It's official. I'm a green belt again. I feel so right about doing this, but my boyfriend says I'm taking the easy way out. I don't think so. If I wanted to take the easy way out, I'd go to white belt. Before I left the other school (first TKD school), I was a 6th gup/kyu. In the new school, just because the color of my belt, they jumped me to 4th gup. I didn't feel right about that. I talked with my instructor, and he agreed with me. What do you guys/gals think?
  17. Yes, I can do splits, but it took me almost three years in two arts to do so. Lotta hard work and patience See this thread. Lotta good stuff in there http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6186 P.S. Good link, tommarker
  18. Thanks, guys I was told I had good techniue, but I know nothing in this school. So, yes, I will catch on faster if I just drop a couple of ranks. ZR, you are right. I don't care about the color of my belt. I am very big in technique. And I want to learn everything to the fullest and do it right.
  19. I have used TKD in a real situation. So when someone says it's not effective, I laugh. I'm not being bais either. Cause I know it works against a raving drunk idiot trying to rape me. I left him in the dirt and I was un-harmed
  20. I'm going down two belts. No it's not a bad idea (for me anyways). I rather do it right, than just go through the motions just to stay where I was. It's not about rank to me. I'm there to learn self defense. And I want to take my time, and learn each move thoroughly, instead of rushing through them and end up half-ars-ing them.
  21. I agree. I was happy that I didn't have to start over, at first. I had to in my last school (TKD), and I wasn't happy. But now that I've been trying to catch up, it's stressful. This school teaches a hell of a lot more than the last one. I'd rather just learn what I need to learn for each rank, than try to cram everything up to blue belt.
  22. Ok, I'm bringing this up again, because I am going to drop rank (to 6th gup green belt). I tried for two months to catch up and the pressure is killing me. I rather KNOW what I need to know instead of "going through the motions" so to speak. I feel good about this, so I'm just going to do it. I'm going to talk with my instructor tomorrow. I'll keep you posted on what he says
  23. I also forgot anything to do with water. Conoe, swimming, some fishing, ect.
