Using your body as a weapon should be a last resort. You should use your body only if you are unable to deploy a gun, knife, or another significant weapon. I suggest you look back a few pages in this thread and read our discussion of this.

I'm into Western archery, but I'm sure the overall feeling is similar.

So should I do more reps, less reps, heavier weight, or what?
-
I know how you feel. I don't want to lose my muscle for grappling, but I have to get in running shape, too.

What's the difference between...
UseoForce replied to Zapatista's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
In fact, we don't do any fancy Korean art-type kicks in Combat Hapkido, so it is basically jiu-jitsu with some more striking. Of course, Combat Hapkido has LOTS of extra stuff that neither hapkido nor JJJ have, but that is starting to get off topic so I won't go into detail. -
Ever consider adding a second tip to the base of the handle? Just one more angle they'd have to watch out for, even if you rarely used it.

Really? Within your style? That's excellent.

Ground fighting in Silat?
UseoForce replied to tdiedwards's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have a DVD, "Kali Silat Entries and Takedowns," where Ron Balicki shows Filipino trapping, a takedown, then some ground grappling for a finish. If there was a school around here, I'd have to try it. Anyway, good DVD if you're interested. BTW, Ron notes that some styles of Silat (probably in the West, like you said) even teach firearms usgae. I think that should a component of any art that markets itself as "self defense." -

Hapkido isn't entirely Korean, either. 99% of Hapkido grappling comes straight from Daito Ryu Jiu-jitsu. Just out of curiosity, that would imply that most of Kuk Sool's grappling is JJJ related, too, right? -
The Undiscovered Style of MMA

This might have been brought up on this thread already, but has anyone seen the Dog Brothers "Kali Tudo" in action? -
Axees are cool, lotta power there.

Ground fighting in Silat?

Its funny you say that, because Silat has a reoutation as an extremely effective fighting style. There are probably many different varieties of Silat. -

The Undiscovered Style of MMA
UseoForce replied to UseoForce's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Wristlocks aren't allowed in the UFC, but they are in PRIDE. Bushido, there are many many very good boxers in the UFC. It is understandable that their style will be somewhat different than what you see in typical boxing. And UFC rules do favor strikers. If a grappler attains a superior position on a striker (as they most often do) the grappler is not allowed to gouge or throat strike either. Before you say "that's not grappling," yes, it is the essence of BJJ. Secure a dominant position and THEN strike, or submit your opponent. The UFC restrictions regarding technique affect strikers and grapplers equally. The stand-up rule is considered biased against grappplers because it adversely affects ONLY grapplers. -
The Undiscovered Style of MMA
UseoForce replied to UseoForce's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I decided to bring my old thread back from the dead because it got so many hits last time. Obviously, people are interested in this topic. We got a little off track last time, so let's start fresh: Styles like wrestling, judo, BJJ, Muay Thai, and kickboxing have all proven their worth for NHB competition. Is there an "undiscovered" style out there that has yet to prove its usefulness for NHB? -
Ground fighting in Silat?
UseoForce replied to tdiedwards's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
The groundfighting/grappling is pretty slick. It certainly has its own flavor. A lot of the locks, etc are similar to what you see in hapkido and jiu-jitsu, though. I don't think it is that suitable for MMA; It is more self-defense oriented and has a lot of "foul" techniques. -
Combat Jiu-Jitsu?
UseoForce replied to bushido_man96's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I read a "Combat Jiu-jitsu" book. Really not much different than any of the JJJ arts (Jiu-jitsu, hapkido, combat hapkido, etc.) I read the whole book in under an hour and learned nothing that hadn't learned thus far in Combat Hapkido, save for perhaps one or two new applications of a familiar technique. Combat jiujitsu likes to separate itself from BJJ and MMA. Combat Jiu-jitsu isn't really bad, but is essentially JJJ with a new name and slightly different attitude. It isn't anything special. -
Palms rock. Compared to a fist, you sacrifice a bit of trauma, but they virtually eliminate the risk of hurting your own hand.
