What you're saying is propagating an incorrect stereotype that I have yet to experience for myself. First of all, many instructors in many styles market their particular style has the best. That's been that way for as long as anyone can remeber. Is it right? Not really, but it isn't something to get upset about. As for respect, I've experienced nothing but respect from 99.9% of the mixed martial artists/jiu-jitsu players I've worked with. I wish I could say my experience with traditional arts has been as good. The difference is MMA/jiu-jitsu guys don't have a lot of formalities. That doesn't make it any less respectful! Before every sparring match in my school, we touch gloves or shake hands. At the the end, we laugh about what we did wrong and give eachother advice. Heck, pro guys usually hug after a bout! It's all very open. There is no artificial respect built into the mixed martial arts, but there is very genuine respect present.

Yes, there are those people out there. I fall victim to this mentality sometimes. It's funny when you stand up and the other guy stays down. A lot of times, he is totally at your mercy at this point. -
The right of law abiding people to have weapons is a God-given, innate right. The minute the law abiding people are disarmed, they are at the mercy of the only armed people left: The government and criminals. Is that an extreme case? Yes. Maybe a bit paranoid even. But it is undeniably true. As a wise mentor once told me, "The people with the guns make the rules."
-
I'm surprised. I thought people would be more in favor of this. Okay, first, yes, there are some people who should not have a gun. These are the same people who should not have a black belt or any martial arts training, so that point is irrelevent. Second, the idea that you should have to join the army to possess a weapon is wrong. Thugs will carry weapons no matter what, and all responsible citizens should be carrying their own. Third, anyone from the UK should know better than to think that gun control reduces crime or stops criminals from carrying guns. Every time the UK passes more gun control laws, the crime rates soar higher and higher, and the law abiding people have been essentially disarmed. There are so many reasons why responsible citizens have the right to (and should) be armed, but I don't have time to post a bunch of statistics. Bottom line: If you are taking martial arts for self-defense purposes, weapons, namely guns, should be the CORE-not the a supplement- of your training. Mankind stopped fighting with its bare hands thousands of years ago, and there is no reason a responsible citizen shouldn't be armed with the best weapon he has legal ability to carry. Some people have a problem with weapons and that's fine, just understand that if you don't carry a weapon, you are a major disadvantage to someone who does. And don't try to deny other people their right to carry.
-
So what if there is controversey? From the hypothetical perspective of an instructor, I want my students to have the best self defense skills possible. If you don't want to train in my style, fine, go elsewhere.

Absolutely positively 100% agree (with parkerlineage).

Really looking forward to this fight -
It really wouldn't apply to any projectile weapon right?

UFC scoring is totally ridiculous. Furthermore, no one really knows HOW the bouts are scored expect for the vague "aggression, effective striking, grappling and ocatagon control." -

I don't like Leben either. I don't care how good (or bad) of a fighter he is, I don't like how he acts outside of the Octagon. -

I would guess it is honorary -
Here's my thoughts about the recent Ultimate Fight Night: -Silva rocks! -Joe Rogan needs to stop raving about leg kicks. Do they hurt? Yes. Have hey ever knocked anyone out? Nope. -The UFC needs to devise a new scoring system. Example, Bonnar-Rashad fight: The only thin Rashad did was score some takedowns. He probably landed less then 5 good shots on the ground the whole fight, and got beat in the stand-up striking game. Also note that each time they went down, Bonnar immediately pulled guard and totally prevented any damage, while still throwing up a few submission attempts. While I'm not saying Bonnar won that fight, he certainly didn't lose it. Sorry . He fouught like a BJJ player (which is what he is). To BJJ guys, who scores the takedown is insignificant. It is the actual ground battle that decides the fight, and Bonnar was closer to finsihing that fight that Rashad ever was. Oh, love the opening crescent kick by Bonnar.

Combat Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes, indeed. The nice thing about the ICHF is that it gives instructors a lot of flexibility. For example, most people do not start learning the ground fighting until high ranks, but we do it from the start. -

No, you've got it all wrong. It's the perfect testing ground. -
Developing strength requires progressive resistance, which usually means lifting weights. I suggest reading some of the older threads in here, since we have discussed this many times. If you still have questions, PM me. Or, better yet, PM Sohan or Aodan. They are very knowledgable about these things.

It is not Jewish. Judaism is a religion, not a nationality. Krav is an ISRAELI martial art, and authentic krav is phenomenal.

So is the hakama merely worn for the sake of tradition?

Actually, we got beat by terrible refs.
