20- testing for green in tae kwon do april 27th, and recently started learning the bo
-
Well, when I'm ready to start, I'll probably get a pair of the round black sai or the stainless from century. The chrome octagon look way too flashy, and any extra corrosion resistance really doesn't matter, as I'll be sure to take good care of them. So, what's the best way to store them? I'd guess wrapped in a cloth in a cozy drawer. As it is, my bo lives right next to my (clean, dry) snowboard in my closet. I've been looking around their site, curios (sp?) about bo and other weapons, and noticed how impractical a lot of them seem. I can't see a good reason anyone would want a "holographic toothpick" bo. Maybe it's just personal style, but I think any demonstration would be more effective with a useable weapon. And any technique that might be used with an extremely lightweight bo could also be learned with a little more effort on a heavier bo.

That always happens to me. I don't worry about it any more, though it really annoyed me when i first got my gi. But now I notice that almost everyone has to adjust their gi once in a while. If you're moving, your gi is going to move. Adjust it whenever you have a break. The more I wear mine, the better it seems to behave.

I don't think I'm ready to spend three hundred dollars on a pair of sai. Century's are fifty, MAWarehouse was around forty. About how much are Shuriedo?
-
I've been looking at sai (mainly at Shuriedo and Century) and wondering. Is there any real difference between the chrome, stainless steel and old-style? Weight, Durability, Balance, Strength? I like the look of the round stainless and old-style. Does either have an advantage over the other for a beginner? This isn't neccesarily a "soon" thing- but somewhere down the line I'd like to learn. I found one place here that does them, but I'd have to earn a black belt in their style first.

styles/types of TKD
mindsedgeblade replied to high jump kick's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Maybe someone could help me out with this. I haven't had time to talk with my instructor about it. We call our forms Kiban 1-5, and I've learned Pyong-an Cho-dan through Oh-dan. Which set mentioned do these fit into? My school is very self-defense oriented, with almost no tournament basis. I'm not sure of affiliation either- it really wasn't a factor in my choice. -
Weapons in TKD?
mindsedgeblade replied to Hogosha's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We do some knife work. But mostly for self defense, and higher students tend to bring in whatever weapon they study outside class. Mind you, we're not strictly TKD. -
What weapon do you actually carry?
mindsedgeblade replied to pressureguy's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I carry a pocket knife, but it's hard to think of as a weapon. I've been carrying it since I was thirteen, and the most it has cut are boxes and lunch. It also has a screwdriver blade which gets a lot of use- on bicycles and rollerblades and such. =:-} Eventually I want to get a hand gun, but mostly for the sport and practice of shooting. I seriously doubt I would regularly carry it. Too much of a hassle. -
My sleeves come down near my wrists. I prefer them long for practicing rolls, drop kicks, spin take downs, and grappling. They save a lot of wear on the arms. On off nights, I just wear a t-shirt and gi pants. Sleeveless gi sounds uncomfortable to me. Love my gi pants- plenty of room and flexibility, and no zippers or snaps or anything to catch or hit.

Language in the dojang
mindsedgeblade replied to Sphintai's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
If I can remember them all, I'm going to start counting in korean. I'll try to learn the moves in korean too, just to make things interesting. -
When did YOU start in Martial Arts?
mindsedgeblade replied to KickChick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
19- and wish it were earlier. Never really had the opportunity till I got to college. Only exposure I really had before were the Ninja Turtles and Jackie Chan flicks. So now I'm learning the bo and want to learn the sai- go figure. :edit: Soon I'll also begin double short sticks and sword. The best of all the Turtles. Not sure when I'll get around to nunchaku. -
osuperu, I'm almost 21 now, and I've been in MA since 19. If you think you've found a good dojo, definitely stick with it. If you have a fairly large mirror around, and a little space, you can practice punches, blocks and kicks at home. I'm sure that if people see that you're putting effort and time into it, you'll feel at home in no time.
-
About three knuckles in, and then three knuckles away. I have really strong abs tho- probably from getting kicked all the time But they're like push ups- slowly improving. I can manuever monkey bars easily enough, and pop off the ground no problem, and there's nothing weak about my punch, so slow improvement is just fine.

Everyone in my school has jammed their toes. I guess it's natural when you've just started. The more you practice with body pads and a heavy bag, the easier it gets to keep your toes up. You really don't want to smash your toes doing a full power kick into the bag. Maybe calf or wall stretches would help?

In the past, I've tended toward more aggresive, but that didn't work very well. Now I'm experimenting with a little more deception, but not really depending on counters. Sparring higher belts, I tend to get my head handed to me if I'm not really careful. Up to my own level, people tend to back way off because I have a height advantage. I'm working on giving them the perception that I'm farther away than I am, if that makes sense, and throwing in more feints, or just throwing unexpected techniques. In my school, the legs are the only non-target. Anything else is fair game, and the rule is not to hit harder than you want to be hit.

I started a few months after I turned 19. Now I'm nearly 21, and I know that MA is something I always want to be a part of me. Funny thing is, now my mom is getting interested- but not in the hard styles like me. She likes the sound of Tai Chi- more meditative stuff.
-
I think it was the better option. Rather than someone getting injured, the meditator kept control. Isn't that part of most MA's? "Never fight unless you have to," or something like that.

Did I do the right thing?
mindsedgeblade replied to GojuRyu Shawn's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
GojuRyu Shawn, I think you did the right thing. I'm glad you didn't start the fight, but you did finish it. If I've learned nothing else from MA, that is one lesson I'll always keep. I haven't had to use my knowledge of MA, but it would have been nice when I was younger. Hopefully your bully will think twice before going after anyone else. Just don't let it go to your head- you still have to watch out for yourself- you're not invincible. -
I've only tried once. My hands were so sweaty from bag rounds that I slid right down, and couldn't get back up. I have to start doing them after I test for my green belt.

Well, thugtkd, I'm not sure. What's the difference between olympic and point spar? TKD is good, I'm not that interested in JJ. I've found a TKD school in the area that is hosting a tournament in May, but from prior pics it looks like all little kids.
-
State College, PA mixed style- TKD/boxing/JJ blue belt student thugtkd, since you're in PA, would you know of any tournaments in the area? Or a site to find them?
-
Does anyone know of a good website to find information on local MA tournaments? I'm very interested in seeing one, and eventually competing if I like it. I'm open to pretty much anything now, just like to get a taste of it. TKD, or multi style, weapons or kata competition... I'm in Centre County, PA- actually Penn State.
