  1. Keyword is "mostly TKD", but now I'm going to have to ask my instructor about that one.
  2. Not our master, but recently, a BB instructer was demonstrating a jump rear leg thrust kick. I was landing hard, after a long warmup and lots of other technique and combos. He says "Land quiet, like a cat" and demonstrates.... Except he landed on his heels, and proceeded to scramble back across half the room. I had to laugh. He is a really good instructor, laid back, and has always helped me with my technique.
  3. Nice to meet you, Livgr Jonew. I'm Galja Oetu, Reh Mustang of Tylenol Actually, it's been a good long time since I popped any pills, though I could have used some today. but hey, "Easy isn't for Jedi is it?"
  4. I've been working on a similar one-step spar. Right hand parry block, hook kick over the arm, round house to the face, then maybe a take-down. Not saying I'd actually use it in any real situation though. My style is mostly TKD.
  5. Funny sight in the dojo yesterday... Four people trying to take down one heavy bag = So, I have to ask... How many people does it take to lower the bag? 2 people too short to reach the clip, 1 person to remove the clip, 1 to hold the rope and to untangle the other's handwraps
  6. Oh, I do the bus bit all the time, and now I can show my rifle team brother a few moves with a pool cue. I've also noticed I'm using fore-arm blocks if a door tries to shut on me. Or snap a low block down to hit the panic bar when I back into a door.
  7. It's a tradition in my school also. When you first get your belt, the BB that first taught you will usually say not to wash it. No superstition intended. I haven't had to wash a belt yet. They just don't get that dirty for me. My gi and hand wraps on the other hand catch a lot of sweat. Lol- i just let my gi air dry for the first time, because I was tired of all the static. I finally had time to let it dry for a couple days before I needed it. It's sooo much softer now, and doesn't puff up as much. The sleeves don't snap anymore when I punch tho
  8. My school has a fall and spring picnic. Everybody plays football or soccer or whatever, and our master usually runs the grill. Since we're at college, there's always a demonstration at the beginning of the semester. Lol- not too many of the people that go to the demo actually stay around though. Colored belt promotions are done when everyone is lined up a the end of class. Go to the front, bow to each BB, recieve the belt and certificate, and shake the master's hand.
  9. A practical use for one step spars... I think I'll have to try that one next time I go to the dojo- minus the breaking of course. Don't want to break any partners.
  10. Probably Korea. The basis of my school is Korean, though it incorporates a lot of other styles, including american boxing and Ju Jitsu.
  11. When you can identify all the wrong ways actors throw kicks in cheesy MA flicks...and know you can do it better. When you go to the dojo, and no one else shows up. and this is me to a "T"- You know you're obsessed with martial arts when you get up in the morning sore, and the thought of going back to the dojo is all that keeps you going. Yeah- I've been to the dojo on off nights, and nobody else came. Practice kata walking to class- that's me. Do kata in my head to avoid sleeping in other classes- do that all the time, especially with brand new kata. Lol- My entire wardrobe allows me to throw any technique I know. I've also gone to the dojo after an exam in cargo pants and a tank top- somebody said I looked like a Street Fighter character.
  12. I can use either side forward when sparring, although some kicks are smoother off one side than the other. I also snowboard. Being right-handed, I usually ride normal, but can also ride goofy. With the bo, I can do either side forward, but in baseball, archery, and shooting I definitely prefer left forward. I guess it's all about what comes naturally, and what an individual finds to be effective. My school trains to use either side forward, open hand or knife, and we spar from open and closed stances. It seems strange to me that anyone would want to limit themselves to one side or the other forward all the time.
  13. OOho, I like that one! Ever watch the old Speedy Gonzales cartoons? -something about "the fastest mouse in the west"- or was it the fastest mouth? "Andele, Andele amigo!"
  14. Sorry so long to reply- spring break!! Now I study the bo, but I'm very interested in the sai also.
  15. Do you know where I could find a solid, traditional (korean?) kata? I know the first place to look is my teacher, but this class doesn't do kata til later, and then we have to build our own. I would like to learn one or two basic kata, to help develop technique. I found that learning kata helped me in open-hand, and feel it would help with the bo too.
  16. P: Those are soda cans in the back seat, right? Y: Nope. Or start bragging about winning the local beer pong champiosnhip. P: Here's your ticket. Y: Wait, Officer, this ticket says 65 in a 50mph zone. When did you catch me again? I was doing Twice that a few minutes ago.
  17. I just used regular tide and scrubbed my gi in the sink. The blood came right out. And this was after sitting for a day. We had been doing throws, and my gi rubbed a spot on my arm that bled, and later we were sparring and my partner caught an elbow to the nose. No real harm done. But he did have to run to the bathroom to stop it. =:-}
  18. Well, I'vew been on here a few days and just found this board. I'm James and I'm currently studying under Master James Del Real' Korean Karate Club at Penn State. I also just started learning the bo with Master Schule's Asian Weapons class.
  19. Throwing rocks and now the bo.
  20. Another thing to look for is students working out on their own. If they meet on off-nights to practice or to teach each other it's a good sign. In my school, several of us are in a separate weapons class, and we usually bring in bo's/ jo's/ short sticks to practice alongside our open hand techniques on off nights.
  21. Step out of the way, or if you have the room, use a barrel throw. Just grab their shirt collar/ lapels and drop, get a foot into their stomach and let fly. Of course, you might be a little sore afterwards =:-}
  22. I think the newer ones were created by Clancy, and he had Steve Piceznick sp? help write them.
  23. Aikido rolls? What's the difference? The standing roll should be the same as the kneeling, except from higher up. In my class at least, you just spring forward, tuck your head, get your arms up and roll over your shoulder normally.
  24. Arms are not so good- so around 50 in 1.5-2 minutes. Working up to more by doing sets of 20 diamond, then 30 situps, then 20 knuckle, 30 leg raises...
  25. I used to have trouble with my t-shirt riding up inside my gi. Fixed that by tucking it in. Anyway, I just broke one of the strings on my gi in a grappling session. Turns out it stays better with only the inner tie tied. And it's a lot easier to straighten when it does come up. =:-}
