How fast can you run a 2.4km =1.5miles
mindsedgeblade replied to TigerHeart's topic in Health and Fitness
I did 5k= 3.2 mile cross country in HS. My best was an 18:33, and I knew guys that could do it around or under 15min. I only ran for two years, but with more practice... I did Track for three years, but that was shorter stuff, and hurdles, and long jump. 1.5mile in 12 min. shouldn't be that hard- it's only an 8 minute mile. I haven't timed myself recently, but that's a fast jog. -
Piles!! That's the way to do it! Clean laundry gets thrown in drawers, dirty goes in a pile in the closet. Beds are easy to fix- pull the comforter off, and give it a good snap and let it fall back on the bed- *shrug*- nice and neat. Papers on my desk get pushed into a pile out of the way. That way it only takes a minute to rifle througgh the pile and find anything. LOL- the besty part is, it looks neat, and takes almost no work.

Anyone have any info on Pekulan Pentjak Silat? I think this is the name of the art Toni practices in the Net Force books. She learned it from an old indonessian female guru... got a kris knife... I only have a year left at my dojo before I finish school, and thought this sounded like a really effective fighting art. It's been a long while since I read the book. If I can find anything about it, I'll probably look for a dojo wherever I end up next. Not sure I want to do straight TKD, but It's all about the teacher and the dojo.

Small question.
mindsedgeblade replied to Rockuman's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Umm... any if you've trained enough? I really don't know, but this sounds like an interesting discussion. Would it be something like the "three inch punch?" I've seen videos of this used for breaking boards. -
Long running topic For my yellow belt test, I was extremely tired, and was still slightly unfamiliar with one or two kata. I got a little frustrated, and fouled up a couple times. I had a really bad habit of mixing two kata together. Ending up with Kiban 1.5 and 2.5. Testing BB made us repeat the kata several times, even after I got it perfect. Which makes me wonder if someone else was goofing up... I've fallen on my backside a few times doing spin technique. The worst was on my blue belt test. I think it was a spin back side kick. Ijust got so dizzy after spin back fists, I spun on my heel and fell and made a nice crash on the wood floor. Hopped right back up though, and passed. After the blue test was over, the BB testing my group came over to me and said she really liked my determination. Was happy that I didn't get mad at myself and really screw up. I still joke with people about .5 Kibans

Wouldn't a lightsaber form be the same as sword? ...Your instructor tries to demonstrate a "force grip" from across the room.

Pop in a Metallica CD or anything with lots of guitar riffs and turn up the volume. Then head to the dojo and hit the heavy bag. After that a long shower and some sleep. Does it for me every time.

We use Kiban 1-5, and Pyong-an Cho-dan through Oh-dan, and Gente. There may be a few more I don't know of.

I think "What's the point in this lecture" Not in my open hand, but in my weapons class, the instructor can take a lot of tangents. He's trained under a lot of very interesting people, and has a lot to say. Sometimes I'll be standing there, and wonder when we're going to start doing something. Guess I just need to take it as a lesson in patience. "Easy isn't for Jedi, is it."

Looking at it again, I'm sure we do a few things different. The 4th move in our Cho-dan is a back stance, mid level fore-arm block. And between the back stances at the end, we have a move with the hands high over the shoulder. It's interesting to see the diagrams, since it can be difficult to tell the difference between some peoples' stances. Thanks for posting them. Why are the diagrams in German? I can read some of the legend, but it's kind of fuzzy. Kieran-Lilith, what other kata do you use?

It's more likely to get you a ride in the back of a patrol car. And probably make the officer mad, especially if he has to carry you.

Hmm, they're the same. Perhaps my school has some shotokan influence as well?

What are the English translations of Heian Shodan, and Heian Nidan. And could you post a description of the forms? The names sound similar to two I learned as Pyong-an Cho-dan and Pyong-an Ei-dan. The translation I've heard for mine is "calm peace of mind" levels one, and two

My guess is JKD is Jute Keen Do, as for the rest??

Good luck Slydermv! Wow, it seems a lot of people are testing now.

Thanks. I've been asking around and heard about one through the local Isshinryu club that's hosted by a TKD school.:edit: just found a link for info http://www.chaartkd.com/tournaments.html A big flashing red link when I looked at the sight, and I ignored it at first. I guess that says something about being jaded to the internet. Or just ignoring the obvious The rules seem a little limiting; no hits to the head, no blood. But at least you don't have to wear a helmet or chest protector. What is the usual entry fee for competitors? Does $35 for two events seem right?

body type
mindsedgeblade replied to JimmyNewton's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
About the best body type I've seen is my height and aound 200 lb. More muscular in the upper body than I am. This guy is very fast, good technique, and powerful. I borrow some of his moves, and adapt others from different body types. But I guess it depends on your general and personal style. I'm 6'2", and around 185 lb. I do mostly TKD, with boxing, ju jitsu mixed in, and I'm slowly putting on muscle. It seems to me that stockier poeple at my school prefer grappling, and taller people go for quicker ranged stuff. -
Thanks, aefibird:D I'm feeling pretty confident. Guess I need to train harder. Lol- I could work out with my friends training for red belt...

What weapon do you actually carry?
mindsedgeblade replied to pressureguy's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Lol- i also carry the rocks in my skull. Seems like there are more every year. -
Uh-oh- I'm learning the next kata also... And designing my own for the bo. Dodging cars is no problem, do it all the time. You know you're obsessed with martial arts when: You put yourself in more pain to teach someone the correct way to do an arm bar. You feel the need to go to the dojo to stay sane, and others think you're insane.

I wash my oniform about once every two weeks. That's four workouts, tho I'm in the dojo nearly every day. I only where it to our two formal workouts.
