  1. Sai as marshmelow roasters that's where they came from Long as they don't lose their temper, it's all good right? You don't know much about MA... If you say your a master of "little bunny fu-fu" "boppin 'em on the head"
  2. The kwandao? The one I saw at a kung fu club had a big blade on one end, and a weighted ball on the other. Is that what you were talking about, Taku-Shimazu? Or would it just be a spear with a different head?
  3. For the most part I do- but I'm doing 8-12 bag rounds four days a week. If I'm just working combinations, I won't wear gloves. Unless I've beaten my knuckles raw even through wraps and gloves. =:-}
  4. Found it- they're called Shang Gou (Twin Hook Swords) at karatedepot.com http://www.karatedepot.com/catalog/images/items/wp-sw-90.jpg
  5. Ok- so I went to a tournament saturday. They had kata, breaking, point spar, and weapons forms competitions. I saw a very interesting weapon that I've never heard of before. The martial artist wore what looked like a kung fu type uniform. He had two of these sword-like things that were maybe 1/4 inch thick, and bare metal. They have a hook on the end, and a half-moon shape set off from the handle. Funny thing is, they reminded me of the Klingon batleth, or whatever you call their edged weapon. I've asked a few people in my school, and some have seen these, but no one has a name for them. The form was interesting, and at one time, he hooked the weaons end to end and spun them around his head. With all the different styles represented here, does anyone know what these are?
  6. Well, the bruises and minor aches are usually a good reminder when you wake up. Not sure about looking forward to new bruises, but I definitely prefer the sore muscles to the headache I get after an exam. I've started laughing at an MA movie, and had to explain why to my roommate. It may have even been Mortal Kombat. =:-}
  7. Generally, most people keep them short, but when I had just started, another beginner had long nails, and she scratched my wrists raw doing self defense.
  8. "I say black belt (you can see where this is going) and you should watch the guys disappear!!!" I'd be impressed, and stick around to learn about hert style. :edit: Yay! orange belt!
  9. Not there yet, I have at least another 2 year to go. To me, a BB should be ultimately confident, but never arrogant. Have a clear knowledge of their art, but always be open to learn. Be a good judge of themselves and others, but not get carried away. For me, MA is about the little changes. An old friend saying you look taller, though you've not grown an inch. Finding you've acquired a bad habit, and changing it before anyone says something. Becoming more open to people and more comfortable with yourself, and recognizing how much you've changed, and how little.
  10. The bag would make a decent weapon with a few books in it. Get a little speed behind it, and whoever gets hit is going to know it. Broke out the sandals again today! Nice, sunny weather coming! Haha- might be able to kick them off in a fight and go barefoot. Hmm maybe even use them as a weapon...
  11. All I have to say- "black pants." =:-}
  12. From what I've heard, escrima is the general name of a filipino weapons art, and a name for double short sticks. Kali are basically short scythes, around the length of a tonfa (18 inches) with a short (5-6 inch) blade. Arnis, I think, is the name of another filipino art. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong- I'm fairly new at this.
  13. I got a really strong urge to bow before crossing the street tonight. Managed to fight it down though. It was really wierd- must be spending too much time on KF
  14. "Yeah, I agree with the having trouble NOT thinking too. It's either one or the other. As my friend puts it, "You think when you shouldn't and you don't think when you should." Sadly, it's very true. But sometimes I get it right!" That's what it feels like. I concentrate too hard on some technique, and tense myself up. And then sometimes, I'll draw a complete blank, no matter how well I know it. I felt bad when my instructor walked behind me and said "Focus." Just have to work on getting more of those "right" moments.
  15. Giant, solid milk chocolate bunnies! Cadbury caramel eggs are pretty good too. LOL- How many people have seen the Easter M+Ms? So funny- they have bunnies on them.
  16. Anyone ever have a problem not thinking in class? We were doing kata today, and I just kept spacing out. Grrr... Not thinking of anything in particular- just a total loss of concentration. I just kept doing stuff wrong, and not even the same thing every time... I'd make a mistake, and correct it the next time, and make another. And then I'd get it right, and someone else would foul up. Makes for a very long night of kata. Before that though, we got to have some fun with knives. It got a little rowdy, and two rubber practice knives broke. One guy would have had a real mess of a hand afterward. He grabbed the blade and yanked, and his opponent still had the handle. I heard a "huh?" from both of them, and that got a laugh.
  17. That would be fun. My dojo would win, without a doubt. We're supposed to be the tough guys of MA around here. :evil:Be a chance for some full contact sparring. From what I've heard of other clubs around, it wouldn't be much of a fight.
  18. "I have never met a fool so foolish I could not learn something from him."- Galileo? "As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live." -Goethe Because things are the way they are, things will not stay the way they are. -Bertolt Brecht Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to. :edit: just found this one; "Pain is temporary-but quitting is forever"
  19. SG-1 and Atlantis are both great. I think recently, Atlantis has become the better though. I can't wait to see the Daedelus next season!
  20. I have no problem punching a female in the dojo. She wants to hit me, I'm going to hit right back. I'll just be a little more careful of my target. We do that hitting drill too. Thirty seconds seems like forever, when you can't even block. On the other hand, when you're hitting someone, the time flies.
  21. Never had any bowing incidents outside of class. But I sometimes get mixed up with how I'm supposed to bow. My dojo and my weapons instructor use two different styles. This can be a headache, especially with my hands full. Anyone ever try to bow when carrying a heavy bag on your shoulder? That was almost embarrassing! Imagine, an 80 pound bag on your shoulder, and the chains smacking you in the back... That was a very precarious, very slight bow. Got a good workout though, toting that up and down stairs.
  22. Walking, even jogging on a curb is easy. Throwing two or more kicks without putting the foot down gets sticky.
  23. Karate Kid style- up on the rail of a boat kidding, kidding. Slow kicks with your hand against a wall work. Slowly moving away from the wall, till you balance on your own. And of course, kicking a heavy bag. Anybody else have some input, I'd really like to hear it.
  24. Hey, I'm in the same position. I'm 20, 6'2", about 185-190, not sure. Want to get rid of those love handles for the beach this summer. Best I can think of is to keep running, gradually going farther, faster, and to do plenty of push ups, sit ups, and chin ups. Bag rounds and jump rope are good for a work out too. I just started jumping rope after who knows how many years, and it's really rough on my calves. Guess it's the same as everything else, though- you only improve if you push yourseld.
  25. I'm happy with my plain whhite gi. But when it's my turn, I will be very happy to wear the black gi our BB's wear. Any other color just doesn't seem right. Red for a master though- that makes sense. Our gis have the Korean flag, US flag, and Mu Duk Kwan- same as my avatar.
