What is the Biggest weight you have lifted and how many reps
baronbvp replied to Jeet Kune Do's topic in Health and Fitness
Not bad! When I was 17, I was 5'9 and wrestled at 127. You are much stronger than I was (or am). -
Kansas City Ninjas. Who'd a thunk it. That would be a great name for a sports team.

I can't imagine Norv Turner agreeing to have a coach who was identified as his potential successor hired the same day he was, but you never know. Could be a hedged bet by Spanos. I think that's the overt plan in Seattle for putting Jim Mora behind Holmgren, who is ready to retire before long. As for Marty in Cleveland, I hadn't considered it. Might be a good move. Are they looking?

Beware! It is toooooo fun. If nothing else, you gotta click on "Best of Craig's List."

What about this? Ft. Hays State Univ. Judo 600 Park St., Hays, KS 67601 Office: (913) 628-5868

does not = You had the right idea, unlike many people. Sounds like you went too hard, for too long. I think low weight with high reps is a good way to break yourself back in. Keep the lactic acid away so you can train more often. But glad you're back throwin' steel.

I think you need to get in the water and swim. It will take off some pounds, increase your aerobic capacity, tone your muscles, and be easy on your knees. That's one thing I love about bodysurfing. Is there a pool nearby? Maybe it is time to switch arts, grasshopper.

I'm liking the slip right now. It's kind of like an effective head fake with a glove to shield your face. You could take a whole class just on defense. It would be awesome.

Short, uneven match = bad investment by the TV advertisers.

You know what reminded me of it? Watching one of Bushido Man's links to a video of Bob Sapp going off on a guy well after the bell, thereby getting (deservedly) disqualified. Totally out of bounds. People get sent to the hospital or killed in real life when that happens.
-
Bushido Man: for a guy who says he's heavier than he'd like to be, and has bad knees, you do a LOT. Nicely done.

Holy cow, you're right! That's weird. Hmmm...

I've sold used furniture on it very successfully. It works like a champ.

Here's some photos of Royce Gracie in a blue gi: http://gracieva.com/multimedia.php I wouldn't personally try this look unless I had the belt to pull it off.

Proportional response, fellas. The only thing cheap in a fight is going too far after you've won. You gotta know when to stop.

sidekicks
baronbvp replied to Chris05's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I would agree. It might be something you consider if you ended up in the stance during the match. Perhaps you could try one after missing on a round kick, after chambering the leg. But you're setting yourself up for an attack against your support leg. If a side kick is a kick you like, try it in a match and see what happens. -

Don't forget Ross Geller and the principle of "unagi" in Friends. -
Bushido Man's right. I've been lifting weights for many years and I love it. Get a book called Body for Life by Bill Phillips. One of his methods, widely accepted by bodybuilders and strength coaches, is to pyramid your exercises. For instance, for bench you might do this (sample weights - I have no idea how much you can lift): 60 lbs x 12 reps 80x10 100x8 120x6 70x12 Start light until you figure out the proper weight for you. When in doubt, stay lighter and use good form. The key with this method is to do about 12 reps of a light weight to get your muscles warmed up with that motion. Then you increase the weight on each successive set and decrease the reps. The heavy, low-rep sets are where you build your mass and power. The last set of low weight, high reps gets the lactic acid out of your muscles and prepares you to move onto the next exercise. Of course, make sure you do some sort of aerobic activity for 5-10 minutes before you start lifting - at least until you start to break a sweat. Jumping jacks or skipping rope are good ways if you have no other. Then stretch for another 5 minutes, and start lifting. Stay hydrated. We have a training log thread here: http://www.karateforums.com/the-martial-artists-training-log-vt30246.html. We'd love to have you join it. Part of being a martial artist is having a fit body. Combine weight training with some aerobics and you will enjoy it for years.

Judo Site
baronbvp replied to Feathers of Doom's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Judo was my first art as a kid. I trained in it again in college. Learning how to fall properly was an early skill I have used throughout my life, including after getting thrown from a horse. I have warm memories of Judo and would like to train in it again someday. It has been a long time. -
As my son would say, that rocks out loud.

They are the modern-day gladiators.

One of my best friends in college was a Japanese-American born and raised in Kaneohe in Oahu. He was a black belt in Judo and in a form of karate, I believe Shotokan. He was a grappler and striker long before MMA was a term. I trained with him in his club in LA and learned a great deal from him. Kudos to the islands!

Thanks. Might be the only one I get. I will definitely be working on all those defensive moves.
