Starting JKD
baronbvp replied to baronbvp's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I have two more classes, but I'm having some minor surgery on Mon so I will be unable to spar. I'm tired of training in bare feet on a laminate floor, so I will observe the last two classes and that will be it. We do some MT at the JKD school. I still may take the BJJ and MT classes at the other school I found, but I will wait and see how this JKD school goes. It includes ground fighting, so I may just stick with it alone. I may still take a fencing class, but then this JKD place also does weapons - kali and modern. It's all good - literally. -
Just returned from my first night of JKD. I really like the school, the head instructor, the people who train there, and the environment. These are all requirements for a good training match. We talked some philosophy while we warmed up. Tonight we focused on blocking kicks with the knee, or stopping the kick with the foot, and avoiding kicks altogether. Avoiding contact is always better than blocking. Lots of drilling and then sparring with only kicks and defenses against them. It is a very mellow yet serious training environment, aggressive but with humor. I was very comfortable. I think I have found a new home. PS - My Thai round kick is improving.

I just returned from my first night of JKD. It was great. I have been doing Muay Thai and was considering adding BJJ, but I like the setup at this place: http://www.completefitnessconcepts.com/ The head instructor is in his 40's like me. We share similar philosophies and I like the environment and the people who train there. They do kickboxing, ground fighting/submission grappling, trapping, kali/weapons, and even Tai Chi. The integration of all these disciplines and more, wrapped together with Bruce Lee's philosophy of each person developing their own martial art, is very attractive. Does anybody else have stories to share about JKD? What they like and don't like at their dojo/school or in their system?

Bushido Man, are you in the blizzard right now that is west of Omaha?
-
I paid attention to this the other night to see if I do what I think I do, which is not bounce. I don't. I spend my time moving around and positioning myself for attack and defense. I really don't think much about my footwork during sparring, though I probably should. None of the other guys in my MT class are bouncers either.

You can now get a B.A. Degree in MA in the USA?

I think we'd all be interested to hear what you learn. You could be cutting edge - the best kind of ax. -
Muay thai Round kick
baronbvp replied to Armbar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
So what was your secret in getting your hips to turn over? I did it once last night but almost lost my footing as my pivot foot came off the floor. I think I kind of muscled my hips through, not much finesse, but the kick was definitely harder. -
Turns out he is available. And there are quite a few others around the league. The Seahawks have made Safety Ken "The Hammer" Hamlin available, and Dallas is reportedly interested. I hope he doesn't cross to the dark side.

Good job, Bushido Man! That kind of kicking talent is not common, my friend. That's why I'm a puncher.

The best kick for self defense
baronbvp replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Great point, Cross. I think the most important thing is that if a low-risk opportunity arises to do a kick that you are very comfortable with, then do it. -
JKD Belts
baronbvp replied to Kodiak82's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I go to my first JKD class tonight. I haven't done JKD specifically since college. I don't recall any forms, though. That's one of the things I like about it. Maybe tonight will shed light on the subject. -
They are both contact sports! Now if I was speaking German while doing Muay Thai, my head would explode. I actually may do that next year when I move to Germany. There's a place called MMA Berlin I am interested in: http://www.mma-berlin.de/ More pain!!

JKD Belts

I've never been a big belt fan. For those with JKD belt systems, how do they work? How does one advance without kata (which I never thought was a good way to rank fighters anyway)? -
Only one hour of MT tonight. All young guys again except for me. Great workout but I'm getting tired of being barefoot on a laminate floor. Not all the seams are tight and it is not the best surface on which to train. I had to leave before sparring since my sons were finishing swimming lessons in the pool downstairs where I take my class, but it was just as well. After being corrected during four hours of German lessons today and one hour of Muay Thai, I'd had enough of other people telling me I suck.

I think Damon Huard proved last season he can be your guy. His brother Brock quarterbacked the Washington Huskies in college and threw for Seattle for awhile. Now he does radio color commentary for the Seahawks. He is obviously glad to see his brother doing so well in Kansas City. (Little known fact: Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's brother Tim is Eli Manning's backup in NY, married to Elizabeth Hasselbeck of The View. Perhaps they should give him a run and sit Eli.) It's all about finding the right fit. Perhaps Cleveland would be good for Harrington, but I suspect after Detroit he needs to look to a different part of the country.

Is anyone doing any home improvement projects?

Yeah you do! And don't forget the beer holders. -
There's always something! I think Harrington needs to find the right system, and then excel. Like maybe as Hasselbeck's backup.

should you punch first?

Well said, Cross. -
Bushido Man, if you haven't read it yet, check out the latest on the combine from Peter King: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/02/26/indy/index.html?eref=si_nfl Here's a taste: Man, I love football.

Costco has great prices on Glucosamine-Chondroitin. I love that stuff.

Oh, bummer! Mine was delayed due to snow shoveling. Yours is a better reason.

Wow!

Then you should buy yourself a big ol' black power saw. Or a monster black snow blower with tank treads and a headlight. -

Bushido Man, buy black appliances before you buy stainless. Stainless appliances...aren't. You will get fingerprints and such all over them. It's a real pain. -
I can't even bench my own body weight. Throwing 225 a couple dozen times is unreal.
