Bushido Man, you're an animal! Were those sledgehammers Sohan's "banging on a tire" exercise? Thanks, I think they did. Mohs surgery checks pretty well to see if it's all gone. Now I have two more gnarly long scars on my face - the better to intimidate my opponents! Good luck on your test for black.

Nicely done. Who took the video, and did they use a digital video camera? -
Starting JKD

Looks like I'll have to wait on the BJJ and more MT until my face heals after surgery. I'll see how it goes with just JKD, since we do submission grappling and MT KB along with other stuff. No full contact stuff for awhile. -

Well said. -
I wouldn't mind seeing Jeramy Stevens, the Mouth, go from Seattle. But Graham went with Denver, so who knows what will happen at tight end. Sometimes, yes! I miss the Raiders, Chargers, Chiefs, and Broncos. But I like dominating the NFC West. And our rivalries continues to grow with Dallas and the Giants. Truth is, if they keep false starting due to the 12th man's noise in Qwest Field, I don't care what uniform they wear!

Even though I had skin cancer sliced out of my face yesterday, I was planning to attend my Muay Thai class tonight to absorb by osmosis. But nooooooo - canceled for snow AGAIN! Third time!

We should all train this way. Your training would make great material for an article.

I say this only half tongue in cheek, but maybe there's a market for a type of seniors tour. Beyond the masters level, more like the Senior PGA Tour or ice skating shows with former greats. Exhibition fighting of the recent stars might fly. You think? -
How many of you have actual combat experience?

Rock and roll, hoochie koo. Glad to know ya, HM2. I like the wisdom of being older, too. -

I own two of the books by Iain Abernethy you may be referring to: Karate's Grappling Methods: Understanding Kata & Bunkai and Bunkai-Jutsu: The Practical Applications of Karate Kata. They are both very good, very unique. Why do you train one thing, and fight another? Why not use your time instead to train KB, takedowns, and grappling? -
I make my eyes huge and wild, then go psycho-John-Cusack on the guy. (Think Grosse Point Blank or The Sure Thing.) gzk, great post. Not many people train that stuff. How else do you guys train for real situations?

Why the long pants?

I know of no one who trains Muay Thai that is allowed to intentionally strike knees or groins. Where is this legal - in Thailand? That would shorten the careers of many fighters. -

There you go! I think most of them hadn't seen that one before. -
Wow. This article puts many things in perspective. My struggles are nothing compared to yours. You have given me great inspiration! Thank you, and congratulations.

KarateForums.com: Five Years Online

Patrick, I know this is late, but I just found this thread. You have done a great job here. I joined back in 2005, then took some time away while deployed overseas. I looked you all up again last Fall and I am glad I did. I have searched other forums while looking for various information, but none are as professionally run or have the mature user and editorial voices that this one does. Congratulations and keep up the good work. Maybe you should mosey on down to a dojo and see what all the fuss is about. -
Buy it. You can buy dinners that cost more than that.

There is some stupid phat money being thrown around. Makes me mad (Holmgren too, I bet) that the Hawks let Steve Hutchinson go last year over $7M/year, and this year any ol' guard can command that in free agency.
-
Yep, good point. I think we both realize that but got sidetracked with details. The times I have used this there were people, cars, tables/chairs around, etc, so that sort of drove my positioning. Another factor I've seen is some people get even more irritated or agitated when they feel you are trying to calm them down, especially if there's an audience. That's usually a sign it's time to get more help.

You'll look like that video from the 80s, "Take on Me," by the band A-Ha. It'll be sweet! -
I guess I watch my last few classes of MT from the sideline. I can still learn while I sit, but man. My new arts: Muay-not-so-Thai. Jeet-Kune-don't-touch-me-Do.

Well, I just had minor surgery to remove some skin cancer from each side of my face. (Too much sun and surf in the 70s/80s). The doc said no full-contact MA for 4-6 WEEKS! Aaauuuuggghhhh! This sucks. Makes sense, but it sucks. I guess it's time to transition to my stretching regimen and attend class to learn by osmosis. I will try to start training lightly again without face contact in a couple of weeks if I can. Man...

should you punch first?
baronbvp replied to little kicker's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"First in, first served" is a defensive term that means the first opponent toward you gets hit/thrown/killed first. It doesn't mean you hit first. I believe that saying comes from foxholes getting overrun. Another saying is "shoot the closest alligator to the boat." Either way, the highest threat is served (by you) first. -
Bushido Man, there is a third option: open your own school. You teach TKD. Hire a BJJ guy to teach you and others grappling. I'll bet if you were the new MMA school in Hays, they will come. Maybe even hire some college wrestlers to work part time or this summer. Once you start, I'll bet you could grow it. Your own school, brother. Think about it.
