Early Karate styles in Japan (besides what PAL already mentioned) are Shotokan, Wado ryu, Shito ryu, Kushin ryu, and Shindo Jinen ryu. I practice Shindo Jinen ryu, and it's more of Japanese styles Karate.

Bushi can be used on samurai, ronin, and others who study martial arts, it's acutally a broader term. Doctor and nurse are both medical practitioners, but are they different? YES. Air borne rangers and Navy Seal are both soldiers, but are they different?? YES. Your argument holds no water whatsoever. First of all, that's not the fantasy, Since you are in Japan now, you can to iga villagle where they have ninja museum there and see what their custom is like. regarding skulk unnoticed, well, that depend what kind situation it is. if you want to walk around town or enemy camps, of course you don't want to wear black from head to toe. However, there are many occasion, especially during the night where you want to wear all black, cuz the you want to get as less expose as possible, and black work the best in the night. or at least covered your face so no other seeing you. (Even today, our soliders wear black head to toe with face covered when doing some special missions in the night.) again, the example you are giving is "in certain occasion," which is really pointless in a arguement. However, we do know in the past, Ninja don't walk around and show other they are ninjas at least not like samurai, and that's the buttom line. This along, show that ninja and samurai are different. again, if they are the same why there are two terms I duuno who Ashida kim is nor I have seen Sho Kosugi's movies. Acutally all the stuff I mentioned, were very very basic, and not hard to find on the internet. Someone really need to do some search.
-
sigh, The buttom line is they are different, if they are the same, why don't they just called all of them Samurai, or Ninja. If you write samurai in Kanji, it means service person, as men in service, like military man. if you write ninga in kanji it means "person who holds within." or "Perseverance/Endurance" just by the title, it shows that they are very very different. and another fact is, ususally ninja hide their ninja identity, most ninja won't let others know that they are ninja, that's why alot of time they covered their face. as samurai, they are proud, so they let everyone knows who they are. They dont usually covered their face. Historical records state that certain ninjas were from the Iga/Koga (modern Mie/Omi) region.

Selecting a Second art
kzshin replied to pericles's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
kinda confused me, you said you study karate, judo, and jujitsu. Not only you have 2nd art, you have the 3rd art also. As karate practioner, I will pick judo and muay thai as my other 2 arts -
Althought, traditional TKD doesn't overly focused on high kicks, but alot of TKD kicks are in fact, high kicks. I think learning TKD without learning the high kick, is like learning judo without learining seoi-nage. Generally speaking, it's is easier to start split your leg when you are younger, and harder when you are older. General Choi can split his kick during his seventy, but he didn't start spliting his leg at seventy. However, if you really like TKD, and willing to work hard. Anything is possible.

uuhhhhhh...semi-auto??? that's tooo much man, plus just like old martiart films were saying "There is no honor" in that. I think just let him fall is good enough.
-
yup, technique is very important, that's why I post it here for suggestion. Personally, I really like thrust kick, so I want to be really good at it.

has any one seen drunken animal??? I only seen my nieighbor's dog got drunk once. Never seen tigers, or Crane or mantis got drunk. Drunken monkey might be easier to see. I wonder who will look at drunken animal and learn their movement to create drunken animal styles. maybe the same guy creat Frog style.

already tried "you don't need to hit this hard." And he seems to be more proud of his strength. Can't chose other partners, cuz it's a small class. So the only option left is hit him harder, but in the same time I don't want to really hurt him. That's why I need suggestion on how to control power, and so far everyone has been really helpful.

shindo Jinen Ryu karate here.
-
yeah, I think that some guys do need some lesson.
-
check any site regarding Bujinkan will give you some ideas. Also check website regarding Iga or Koga.

HAHAHA, I don't want to get kick out of shool, cuz all my instructors know that I am very cautious person when sparing, so if I did that, they might think I did on purpose. Maybe I should just give him couple really hard punches. Honestlly, not only that guy didn't have control of his power, he also don't have good sense of the distance. That's why I was alwasy extremely cautious when sparing with him.

NO, Samurai weren't suppose to raping nad pillaging, yes, it did happend, but it shouldn't be, just like COPs shoudldn't beat up innocent peopl, but it happened. Samuari are like Knights in western civilization, protect weak, served the lord......etc. Actually this is a well known fact, and it did happend. It was being eaten away only around Meji Restoration period and after, if you look pre Meji Restoration Era, Samurai did have hight social class, and most ninja were actually peasant. hmmmm.....I think someone else need to learn Japanese history also the way of Samurai, and also why Ninja are originally from that certain region. If you really read these history, it's not hard to noticed that all of source tell you that Ninja and Samurai are really and supposely different, However, as I mentioned on earlier post there are exceptions, especiall in later of history, but we are talking about general defination here.

u mean thrust kick him while he moving back??
-
I felt the exact same way as you do. Especially there are alwasy few indivuals that can't wait to try the technics that he learned, or want to see how good or tough he is, and usually this are type of the guy that has no control at all. That;s why I felt I have to hit him harder, but at the same time I don't want to really hurt the guy.
-
How did you guys learn to control your power during sparing. I found that sometime when you sparing with bigger guy or heavier guy, you do need to hit them little harder than... say same size or smaller guys. Because from my experience, bigger guys tend to like to think they are bigger and stronger, so they tend to like charge right at you or not move, especially the one that are not good at controlling themselves (the type of guy that learn martial art for fighting, and gets really excited at free sparing, i am sure alot of you have met guys like this), so you do need to hit them harder to kinda push/hold them back. However, I found out for me it's kinda hard to control not to hit too hard, but at the same time hard enough to stop the guy. I mean I can control it like 20% strength and 100% strength, however, I can't control like 20%, 30%, 40%,......100%. I also know that when you hit fast, usually it will be harder, however, how you hit fast without hitting hard??? any suggestion will be good.

That's right, PAL, there are some tensions between Funnakushi and Motobu, which sometime put Sensei Konishi in weird situation, cuz Sensei Konish trained with both individuals very closely. That 3 Taisabaki katas are Shindo Jinen Ryu's spicial kata, they ususally only teach people after black belt. I happend lucky enough to learn the 1st one Taisabaki shodan, however, I didn't master it yet. I better go get that tape, sounds like it has alot of food info.

Originally, Generally and technically, Ninja and Samurai are DIFFERENT. Of course, just like many things, there are few exceptions, however, in General, Ninja are not Samurai.
-
WOW, where did you see the pic, PAL?? I am planning to order the Shindo Jenin Ryu Video, and learn more about the history of the style I am learning. by the way, Konishi sensei studied under founder of Akido for a while, so I think some of our grapping art is actually from Akido.
