actually "ka" in Japanese equal to "chia" in Chinese. in meaning and in writing. In term of how to used it, it's very similar, but not always the same due to the gramar difference between two language. For example, no one use it like Hung Chuan chia, but you do heard term like, Wu Shu Chia, Wu tao Chia, and stuffs.

We are not talking about the same type of kick. The side snap kick that I was talking about can't be used to attack side of someone's knee of lower ribs due to the movement of the leg. However, I am not sure the kick that I was talking about is Yokogeri Keage, That's why I put question mark.
-
Are you talking about side snap kick?? If that's what you are talking about, the main purpose of the kick is chin attack. This kick is very usefull when you are able to kick it high to the chin.

if it's tradition okinawa karate aka To-te, then no, there is no link. if it's Japanese karate, then yes, the philosophy is greatly inflenced.

Japenese anime

sword of 634 (I think it's best kendo film ever), Shurai's door/gate (good karate film), fist of north star 2 (not the first one)......etc. Actually alot of older one that were not release in US. Actually Dragon ball has pretty good fighting scene. -
every punch and every kick supposed to be ippon technicque in Karate if you master it. Mas Oyama knows the best "one strike certain kill." That's how he won most of his fight. and I think people should stop using UFC as bench mark to judge what style is better.

I have seen HK version, Taiwan version, US version, and VCD version. I think the US version is actually the French version, so the back ground music and sound effects are not original, and it sounds weird on negative side. HK versioin and VCD version were cutted in certain scenes due to violence. Taiwan version seems to be exact same as orginal, but the DVD doesn't come with special feature, so it's a movie only. I heard the best one will be the Thai version and Japan version, since there are no cut, and there are all the making of movie clip, which is very good to watch.

Aww, sux to heard that Mas Oyama didn't sign for you. If I was in your position I would've be disappoint too.

hung gar kung fu
kzshin replied to jctkd's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
It's not a grappling base art. In fact, most of chinese art (NOT ALL) aren't, but that doesn't make them less complete, because there are reasons for that. (it will be another long post for me to write) However, most Chinese Martial art will teach you Chin Nan (small Chin-nan to be specific), aside from the main art. It's almost like a standard thing that they will teach you to know if you learn Chinese Martial art, doesn't matter which style. Maybe except Shia Chiao, since it's one of rare Chinese art that is grabbling base. -
oh just want to add few more things. Lee Si Ming, Tang's Emperor (the one has who been helped by Shiao Ling monk) promotes martial art effortlessly during his reign, that's why, Tang is one of very few dynasty that actually leting noble women learn how to ride horse and practicie martial art. Also Lee Si Ming (Tang Tai Zong) himself is one of rare emperor that is truely an martial art expert, who is very good at it (alot of emperor knows martial art, but alot of them are not good at it), and has fought numerous battle himself. And his favor weapon is Bow and Arrow. Not only that, he is very intelligent. His documentation of how to manage an empire was one of the highest regard document in Politic Science and Managment, not only in China but thru out the Asia. I think out of all the famous emperor in China, he is the best one that Chinese ever had. (just my humble of point of view.) I also think Chinese Martial art owes alot to him.

wow, that's a long history to talk about. I think, Tang dynasty will be the most important period for Shiao Lin, cuz that's the first time Siao Lin monk was documented in history that got involved in politics, and helped the Lee Si Ming, which later becomes Emperor, on many occasions. That's why Lee Si ming, actually given them a tiltled called Marital Monk (Wu tseng), and welcome them practice their art instead of prohatbited them like some of other dynasty. Tang dynasty is also when Buddism really flourished, every Chinese or Chinese culture related people heard about the story about Tang San (three) Zong went to India to get scribt. And that's how the mythtical legend of Soon Guku (monkey king) story based on. And name Sun Goku was actually used in Dragoball (one of most famouse Japnese cartoon). Actually in every early epsiode of Sun Goku, has alot similarity to the original story. So you see how strong of infulence of Tang Dynasty Culture is, even till today, and not only to Chinese, to other part of Asia as well. Another thing, Tang is very important to Karate, and I think Tang soo do too, since Tamg Soo do pronuced like chinese as Tang's hand way. For Karate, To te (original name of Karate), if you write in Chinese, it actually means Tang hand, it does not directly translated to chinese hand, and that's because in the past, in Asia, Tang actually is the name of China. (for people who has very little or no idea of Chinese history, it's kinda like Roman is where Itay used to call) And also, Chinese is an given name from westerner after they arrived China During Chin Dynasty. that's how they start calling people Chinese. But for country like Japan or Korean, long time ago, they called China, Han, or Tang, or Chu go (direct Translation of Chinese Character, "Center Nation") Tang is one of most important dyansty in Chinese History, and it's the MOST important period for Chinese Culture to flourish develop and spread all over Asia. Han dynasty will be another very important dynasty. Geeze, I wrote too much extra stuffs. well, my point is, Shiao Lin was kinda famous before Tang Dynasty, but it got really famou starting from Tang Dynasty.

oh don't be sorry, we are all just here to learn more and share knowledge. well, yeah, some triads are like mafia, but some....well, it's getting really complicated, cuz Chinese history is almost like a war history, for 3 thousand (some people might argue it's 5000) years there are always wars, and rebillion. Yes, there might be 200 to 300 years interval of peace, but there are always some kind of civil wars, or rebellions. So there are actually lots of secret socities, and some of them not neccesarry doing crimes like modern day crimes. They might just have different political stance, was against the government, not happy with life, don't like the way of living.......etc. many reasons. So they are not necessary all doing crimes. Now, the triads in modern days (post 1900), I will lean towarnd the history channels more.
-
NO, Not every socieites were initiated cuz of banned of martial arts or even has anything to do with martial art, maybe member knows martial art, but martial art is not the reason of gathering, and definately not White Lotus. Actually alot of them had many complicated society and political issues and reasons, and you really need to study them and really knows Chinese history to understand why, how and when. Some of the secret society or triad (more famous one), but not limited to are: Boxer (Yi Hur group) White Lotus Hong Men Chin Ban ....etc. they were all documented in Chinese History.

Jet Li's last movie
kzshin replied to shaolin10's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I think some of the Info was wrong. For example, Henry Sanda knows more than just karate, he does kenjitsu also. And Sammo Hung, Yun biao, and Jackie Chan should have simliar styles, since they trained together when they were kids. And I thought Chuck Norris's main art is Karate. It's a great post, but I think the fact needs to be fine tune a little bit. back to the subject, I can't wait to see Jet Li's last movie, I heard its' going to be released during OCT this year in asia. -
Mas Oyama Movie
kzshin replied to ivette_green's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I watched the figher in the wind. great story, but fight scene is not impressive. I guess it's cuz the person who played Oyama is not a real martial artist. so those fight scene looks unreal. esepcially compare to ONG BAK
