New to karate and exercise! What can I do to improve?
Ben Martin replied to TheDarxide's topic in Health and Fitness
ha i feel your pain man. when i first started kickboxing i was propper over weight i couldnt even do press ups and the thought of 10 burpees is a nightmare. running is great lots of short sprints. try sprinting to the first door on your street and walk back then to teh second and walk back then the third and walk back do that until you get to the end of your street that will have your heart racing. lots of cardio is the best thing lots of burpees to if you look in the kickboxing section there is a thread about them i personally think they are the best exercise. the more you stick at your training and do it the easier it will become. a few months ago i started doing kickboxing in a boxing gym on sundays with my class and its 2 hrs long it is a killer. but ive also started doing a hour and a half of boxing before hand then my class comes in and i do kickboxing. yesterday i over slept and missed the boxing an only did the kickboxing, insted of me coming out of the gym nackered i felt refreshed even though i trained really hard. so it just goes to show the more you practice the easier it will become:) -
thanks guys. another thing i forgot to mention is that it could be against a white beklt or a black belt the tourney uis not done by belts but by hight and weight and if its like my last one thehy will justy get us all in the ring and look at us and say "you and...... you pair up and sign in". last time i was lucky beacuse even though i lost it was a really close fight i just hope i don't get some oen miles better then me.

this is my second tourney. after losing my last one i really want to win this one, but this one is different as the last one was against thai boxers and other kickboxers in a ring, this one will be against what i call propper marial artists (i see kick and thai boxing as more of a sport then a MA) and it will also be on a mat which i am not used to. The rules are: *semi contact *Punches to the head and body *kicks to head and body *no kicks to the leg *no spinning backfist *sweeps are alowed *no knees or elbows I think the rounds are 2x 1.30 and we are wearing boxing gloves shin pads and kickboots. Do you guys have any tips for me Ive done all my training and i am preparing mentaly but i mean tips as in using my style as an advantage or could you point out the weaknesses in the other styles. i think its going to be karate some sort of kung fu and taekwando (spelling?) Thank you

Pre fight mentality
Ben Martin replied to Dragn's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
my first tourney was last nov and i hyped my self up so much that when i steped in to the ring my sensei looked at my eyes and said to me straight away calm down this is semi contact your not hear to kill him, when the ref came over he said the same thing too. i have my next tourny on sunday and i think im gona try the relaxed approach. i thing ill do some meditating before my match. -
i think going on long runs is good i go for about 45-60 mins when i can and my shoulder is not hurting. i think it should be done by every one. i get what people are saying with short sprints but i think its better to at those in at the end of your run. running has more benifits then swimming and cycling as it gives you a good cardio work out but with the impact of running it forces the body to strengthen its bones, ligaments and joints more then swimming and cycling do. running is not just about fitness but structural strength of the body.

When any package says no known side effects that always puts me off. and with creatine there are no short term side effects

What are good urban places to practice?
Ben Martin replied to JusticeZero's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
^no offence but that sounds crap training in a place that small. i often train with my neighbour in the reck (small park) up the road from my house, i go up in to the grass area at the top cornor and train up there. not many people in the park can see us as its in the cornor but people who are walking in and out can see us and people in the buses going buy can see us too. it doesn't really bother me who sees me train. in 2 years ive only had one person of me out for a fight when they saw me sparing with one of my friends. i just told him that i didnt want to because i didnt know him. now every time i see him on the street he asks me how my training is going so its all good. other people have stopped and watched a few have asked me what im doing and how long ive been doing it for. i sometimes train in my street at night doing sprints farmers walks and shadow boxing too. im lucky in the fact that my college gym has a dance studio which i can go in and use when its not busy. -
people say cycling and swimming is the next best thing to running for stamina. i can't go on long runs as i have an old injury in my right shoulder. it really hurts when i run for a long time even when i was doing sprint intervals last night it started to hurt but i worked through it which was stupid because when i was finished i was hurting so much. so what sort of cycling drills could i do to help build stamina. Thanks

an ex of mine who was 22 had it real bad in her hips she had to stop training because it became to much for her to handel even after an hour or so of walkin she would b in bad pain. her friend who is the same age has it real bad too. if you search online you can find out about foods you are ment to avoid. the only ones i can remember are beef and tomatos.

when i was at a tourney last nov i remember watching the kids fight and they were going at it full contact even though it was ment to be semmi it was crazy. they were getting hit so hard they started crying. but thats when you know u have a good student he crys from getting hit so hard but he doesnt quit.

i think its great that kids do MA even if they dont stick at it while they are doing it its great for their body mind and soul. as soon as i have kids im gona get them training before they can even walk.

http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=18350 ^thats the link to the burpees thread. personally i think that this is the best cardio exercise if you mix it in with running. i love these because they are so hard and they really make you push your self which is how you get maximum results.
