Whats the REAL deal with martial arts today?
Sam replied to The Fonz's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I always think [now talking in real terms] that so long as you understand the effectiveness of your art and aren't blinded by your training, then there is no problem with training in any art..... so long as you understand your limits and the limits imposed on you by the way you train.... A lot of effectiveness is simply doewn to training methods rather than style, [given some styles are mnore effective than others] -
its also a natural oxymoron "using no way as way" is just a contradiction on the face of it - i never think it was meant to be taken literally, just something to think about!
-
exactly - that pretty much summarises the TMA / MMA differences - trainign methods and approach. [the main and NOT only differences]
-
I think generally jumping kicks have more power because of the weight behind them, and for the same reason so do spinning kicks.
-
I like them but if you are talking about bespoke drills, where you know the attacks and defensive, although i like practicing them i think they can be [in terms of Self defense] relatively unhelpful
-
also - trainign for the different rules, and actually raising your physical fitness for such hard competition

A 4th degree in how many arts?!!!
Sam replied to radicalspiegal's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
unless that's all he did..... all his life 8 hours a day.... lol -
1 thing ranger110ky - i disagree about the tournaments and things making up 5% - it depends on the style and rules.!
-
sometimes with breaking, it can be so easy to mess a test up by making a single mistake..... so sometimes it can be down to luck [as even the best of us miss sometimes, or dont quite hit perfectly].
-
I know - i was saying combine TKD with an XMA method - as generally XMA has infiltrated TKD more than anything.
-
No worries, my understanding [from encyclopedia of TKD 1983 edition, by Gen Choi] is that it can be awarded as a graded degree.... ill try and find you the quote and page reference.
-
also - it means ifa you conciously forget your form at grading time, generally you'll end up going through the correct motion by habbit.
-
Anyone who threatens someone else like that is generally breaking the law, but the whole lethal weapon thing is a myth. The only time MA MIGHT count against someone, is if they did significant damage to an antagonist who was actually trying to retreat.... then the "reasonable force" thing would come in, and sometimes it may be considered we are more able to judge what reasonable force is.

Ur fighting/sparring/ tourny move sets
Sam replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ok - I would say that the moves you attack with [irrelevant of style] will depend entirely on who you're facing. Try not to rely on memorised sets of moves or counter attacks as these generally restrict your ability to defend as you are waiting and looking for certain attacks, or develop a pattern. I obviously dont train in the smae style as you [or anything similar] but I would say that the above is general advice. -
I think the onlyp roblem is that its easy to have all your training taken over by XMA stuff.... which if is what u want is a good thing, but can deviate a lot from your normal trainign and technique.
-
Ah right - sorry mis read - thought you said you were a first degre.... obviously missed the red belt part out... lol
-
reverse knifehand low block,. spinning back kick, reverse knifehand low block, obverse palm heel strike

Transitioning between Degrees of Black Belt
Sam replied to scottnshelly's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
made it to BB on the forum now as well havent u, lol any different? -
after doing any pattern we [the bbs generally] do pushups if we made a mistake - if we think we didnt make a mistake we do it in front of the class, and they point them out for us - then we do pushups, lol!
-
I think when you forget to use half of all your limbs youj have a serious problem!
-
Actually... thats not entirely true sabumnim.... it would be possible if there are any 9th degrees to award it under grading - there is no rule preventing it being given as non-honorary. Its just that all the 9th degrees around are honorary.
