  1. Similar to my "Tactics" question – there are three main structures for fighting on the ground… Strike – strike – strike Immediate lock/submission, and if it fails go for another, and another. Positional Control first then look for strikes or submissions (which?) So – which do you favour & why?
  2. There are three main types of tactic that people seem to employ in theor groundfigthing… Ground & Pound (Popular with wrestlers) Constant movement & action (Popular with shoot fighters) Slow & methodical (Most BJJ people use this) So - for you grapplers out there… Which is your "Game" and why? Does it change depending on the situation and/or opponent?
  3. How about we start a thread to measure & monitor measurable goals in our training? Weight loss & gain seems a very popular area. How about a thread called "Weight loss club" and a "Weight gain club" where we can do a regular check-in to log our progress, offer each other support & generally help each other achieve our goals?
  4. In my studies to be a Fitness Instructor we covered 7 basic principles of training. I think this may prove useful knowledge to some of you. Here's the list – I'll expand on each separately so that I can take questions / discuss each in turn. Here's an acronym to help you remember the list… Decisions Strengthening Our Physical Ability Require Incentive 1 - DO NO HARM (Safety) 2 - SPECIFICITY 3 - OVERLOAD 4 - PROGRESSION 5 - ADAPTATION 6 - REVERSAL 7 - INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES So – lets start with number 1 : Do No Harm. This should be very obvious but is often overlooked. It applies to the both physical & psychological hazards. Unsafe exercise practice increases the risk of physical damage and makes training unpleasant. If training is unpleasant it is unlikely to become habitual. In practice, as a coach / instructor, this principle is applied through proper screening, using correct warm up & cool down procedures, providing progression though varying levels of difficulty and setting realistic targets according to the needs & abilities of the student. How many people in the martial arts still insist on performing "contra-indicated" exercises like straight leg sit-ups, ballistic leg raises, bunny-hops, hurdle stretches etc etc? Despite the fact that the educated world of Exercise Science has been telling us that these are unsafe for the last 10 years! "It was good enough for Sensei so it's good enough for us" is often touted – despite the fact that "Sensei" has had a knee replaced, suffers from a chronic bad back & is awaiting a hip replacement – LOL!
  5. We often get questins about what supplements work – but what about those to avoid? What have YOU spent good money on that didn't perform as advertised? - Ginseng (Just gave me the trots!) - Chitosan - Fake ephedra based products (using synephrine istead of ephedra)
  6. You guys should visit this site - you'll love it https://www.sausagenet.co.uk
  7. Pssst... Pat & Macei .... I see it. Just don't wanna give the game away ya know?
  8. They are also vastly over rated. They do work well in stopping forward movement but the chances of actually pulling them off & damaging the knee in real combat are slim. How do I know? Because I and others I know who can pull them off well in training have tried. Yes - they can work, but they certainly not a high percentage move or anywhere near as deadly as they are thought to be. This goes for quite a few other techs too!
  9. Hmmm.... yes I can see that in the fact that it's interval training - but the Tabata method has specific timings to it that have been researched & found to work the best.
  10. Anyone seen the article in this months Martial Arts Illustrated about "traditional english boxing" or some such thing? What a load of bunkum!
  11. Maybe he means a BLOW gun? More seriously - do make sure they don't modify the parts of the chair in any way to specofocally increase it's effectiveness as a weapon - that will bget them into deep legal do-do's. There are enough weapons there without modification - especially if there are bits that pull off like arm rests.
  12. Thanks Doug - I have some specific questions about your answer but I'll wait until we have more input beforen we go into specifics. Come on people
  13. I have a video somewhere of some Okinwan Karateka doing Tonfa Kata - from the BBC Way of the Warrior series done in 1980. Certainly looks like a traditional thing rather than modern.
  14. A lot of Chinese systems use the term "Boxing" instead of Kung Fu so it's probably just a form of Shaoling Kung Fu, as SG suggested.
  15. YODA

    Practical?

I don't buy that SpinningGB - the idea of training one way & fighting another just doesn't make sense. When it hits the fan you will fight the way you train.
  16. 17. I have two very good books on the bubject of BJJ / Groundfighting - both only available online. The Fighter's Notebook from http://www.mixedmartialarts.com is the best MA bok I have ever seen - certainly the most useful. The other is the BJJ Student HAndbook from http://www.jiu-jitsu.net - not in the same class at TFN but still very good. They have a new one out called the BJJ Mastertext which looks great!
  18. Hi dragonstyle18 and welcome! It all depends what's available when you go to college - where are you going? If you can find a JKD Concepts club you will do striking & grappling for sure. L:et me know where & I'll do my best to find you a club.
  19. One of the best and most well timed kicks I have ever seen was in my back garden! Me and my guys where sparring and just as one went for a rear leg kick the other intercepted by planted a side kick right in his chest - just like Bruce Lee did to Bob Wall in Way of the Dragon It sent him, flying over my bird bath, without knocking it over, and sat him in the shrubbery
  20. Great stuff PB. How about giving us a rundown of what you did & how it went?
  21. How's it going then Tobias? I can help lots with basic wrestling & general grappling moves - some pretty ones too
  22. Ok Jack - let me know how it goes and how your recovery is.
  23. That's ok Angus - If we all agreed there be no such thing as discussion Weight training as I prescribed above is fine. I'm not talking about bodybuilding or powerlifting here. So, tell me, what damage will my theoretical 40lbs chest press do that a push up won't? Same target muscle groups, similar level of resistance. How about a 40lb leg extention compared to a bodyweight squat? Or a sub bodyweight lat pulldwon compared to a pull up?
  24. Nope I can't see anything wrong at all - looks ok to me.
  25. It's just gotta be a hoax, I mean, come on (no pun intended!) - Nobody can be THAT stupid - can they?
