Does cutting/sculpting help non-superficially

Cutting and sculpting a body seems like it can get pretty bloody. -
Defending yourself with a knife!?
thaiboxerken replied to GhostFighter's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Good points, Tom. Also, one can use a knife without using the blade. In the case of a folding knife, you can simply keep if folded and use it as a palm stick or fist pack. You can also use a sheathed knife to smack a person around, or help with locks and breaks. -
Oh, I don't think so. I think it's the opposite, actually, an knife doesn't need power behind it so it can come from very awkward angles that a punch wouldn't do much damage from. You also have to be more wary of your limbs. You can't just cover or "hard" block a knife. Also, a good knife fighter doesn't just use the knife. I think it was Illustrisimo that had more KO's with his empty hand than his knife hand. We practice defenses against an attack with a knife from high, low and mid levels, and against stabbing movements and cutting movements. Granted, my "attackers" I have in class aren't trained "knife fighters', nor have I seen any systems in my neighborhood (or state) that do teach that particular art, so it's very possible that I'm missing some sort of attack that I haven't been able to visualize so far. I think going to some seminars would at least stimulate your imagination. I highly recommend Guro Inosanto or any instructors under him. If you're on the east coast, you can try some Tuhon Gahe seminars as well. Without actually seeing how a trained knife fighter uses his weapon, I can't really say whether or not what I know is sufficient or not. I do believe, however, that against a typical, untrained knife fighter, what we practice would work quite well. That could be true, but I think seeing a trained knife fighter would definitely help. With that in mind, the first thing I teach my people when fighting a weapon is...DON'T IF YOU CAN DO OTHERWISE! Good advice for anyone of any martial art.

The mind.....

It's simply his way of telling people to look at the big picture and stop concentrating on the little things. Don't think about what you are doing, just do it. -
Goju Ryu karate--Should I join?

I like Shane's approach. It is something I realize that I do without really thinking about it. Heck, the real "A-holes" don't really stick around to learn anyway, they last about a month before they are humbled and usually leave. -
You can actually train in a martial art, or you can play "karate kid" and try to learn from books and video. While it's possible you will actually learn to be effective with the latter method, I highly doubt that you will. Fighting without a strategy isn't too bright. When Lee talked about fighting without thinking, he didn't mean to fight like a moron. You have to train and train until you can do things without paying much attention to them. For example, when you first learned how to draw letters, you had to pay attention to each letter and the strokes. Now that you have much practice (training) on drawing letters, you can do it without really thinking about it, that doesn't mean you write sentences without thinking though. Do you follow?

"Really, I see no reason to learn how to kill somebody with a knife, since I'm not planning on doing so anytime in the future." Shouldn't you know how a knife fighter will attack you if you want to defend yourself against such a person? Oh, and you don't have to kill a person with a knife.

"Don't you think that you have a moral responsibility as an instructor to NOT teach anything to a prospective or current student who may show signs that he/she has questionable intentions as to how they may use the knowledge that you want to so freely give ?" No, because it is much easier to kill than subdue. You should know that. The hardest thing for a martial artist to do is to subdue an opponent without hurting them and while protecting themselves. Any fool can kill another person. -
Ki & Aikido

Ahh.. the old "I'm not about money" excuse. Well, i can only conclude that you are scared to have your beliefs challenged then. I would've thought a 4th Dan instructor would have some kind of courage. -
I train in all of those, except for Wing Chun, WW2 and "japanese stick arts". I do train in Jun Fan though.

Ki & Aikido
thaiboxerken replied to JEM618's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
There is no need for you to. I'm just wondering why you are passing up on one-million dollars USD. I do have an open mind, I'm just not gullible. I need evidence before I believe absurd claims. I geniunely don't understand why you are passing up on the chance to settle the debate once and for all and make a good profit in the meanwhile. Heck, if I had knowledge of Ki and could provide evidence of it, I'd want to share it with science so that the world could benefit. Do you really believe ki is real? Are you confident enough in your belief to place it to the challenge? -

Apply for the JREF challenge and have your beliefs tested. I simply don't believe that it does exist because there is no scientific evidence of it. Can you prove that pink unicorns don't exist? Why do you run away from one-million dollars that would be yours if you simply can show that Ki is real? The doubter does not have the burden of evidence. -

So, are you ready to prove that Ki exists, Aikidokid? Or are you just all talk? -
To take down a big guy, you should train your take-downs alot. I usually go for single or double legs on bigger guys, the fireman's carry works alot for me. Smaller guys I can just bearhug. Strikes help to setup the shoot. If the big guy knows the game, you're gonna have a hard time anyway. Size does matter, but you can overcome it with good strategy and training.

Christianity and the whole "ki" issue

I don't see Ki and Christianity and the belief in both as necessarily a conflict of beliefs. After all, religion is a personal thing and people modify their religions to suit their needs. -

I guess that's your philosophy. I'll teach any student anything I know, because knowing the secrets aren't enough to actually pull them off. -
I don't see nuclear power plants as more than a trick. I suppose it depends on how one defines "trick". A trick is somethind done for the sole purpose of impressing people. Nuclear powerplants actually do something useful, it was not designed merely to impress people. You can have an unbendable arm, and a good armbar will still break it.

And that is exactly what a good magician would want you to assume as well.
