Goju Ryu karate--Should I join?
thaiboxerken replied to nfl2k2's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I guess we'll just have to disagree. -
Drunken boxing
thaiboxerken replied to Gilbert's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Well, that movie was one of the best kung fu movies ever made. -
Ahh, ok, I thought you had actually interacted with me before I took my hiatus.

I see you have only 22 posts, were you under a different name for a while?

You are correct, practice makes habits. TKD guys do tend to abhor getting in close, and I guess some Kali practitioners might be that way as well. I never really saw that, probably because I've always crosstrained and worked with people that crosstrained in BJJ and Muay Thai as well as Kali, Silat and JKD.

Is hitting a heavy bag bare knuckle good for conditioning
thaiboxerken replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in Karate
I've watched kung fu movies, that's how. Also, as ripper said, why would you want to "build up bone density"? Is there science behind your claim that it actually does build up bone density? -

Good luck! I hope you enjoy it. -
Here at karate forums! That must mean I'm an expert.

Staying on toes?
thaiboxerken replied to Topic's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
You stay on your toes for a knee strike to help you pivot your foot and rotate your hips. If you are doing clinched upward knees, your toes should actually help you lift your knees up, almost like jumping. -
snake fist
thaiboxerken replied to Gilbert's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I think Gilbert watches too many kungfu movies. -
I get ya. That's probably more due to experience, or lack of.

They practice Qi Gong where I train as well. Yet, I still have seen no evidence to support the claims about Qi.

Ki & Aikido
thaiboxerken replied to JEM618's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Perhaps the same reason you are passing on the $1 mill offered by a Christian group to anyone that can prove evolution. That is *, the Randi foundation has a legal obligation to award the money if their test is passed. Tests are agreed upon and designed by both the claimant and Randi. Christian groups make up a set of unfalsifiable claims and tell people to prove them wrong. There is the big difference. Simply put, if you have a claim and Randi calls it paranormal, then all you have to do is show evidence to support your claim and you win the money. Ki/Chi practitioners that know of the challenge and refuse to take it are either cowards or charlatans. That's my opinion. -
It's hard to convince believers to think critically. Ki/Chi practitioners don't care if it's real or not, it's obvious because they refuse to place their claims upon the table of scientific scrutiny.

If you know a person that can put out candles using his "ki", feel free in saying so. Or was that just a hypothetical?

Ki & Aikido
thaiboxerken replied to JEM618's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
When you actually prove to science that Ki exists, then you can talk from an authoritative position. Until then, I'll assume that you are simply talking out of your *. Cowards walk away from challenges, especially those that only challenge their beliefs. -
Well, if you're talking about sparring to simulate a real fight, I think "fencing" as you call it is probably not a bad idea. I mean, isn't the stick supposed to represent a sword? Or do you guys just play it like dog brothers, where the stick is a stick?

That's your experience. My "style" of Kali is actually more geared towards getting into short range. It probably has more to do with instructors and training than the actual system.

Portland, Oregon area
thaiboxerken replied to CapitalKarate's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
NW fighting teaches more than MMA competition fighting. The focus is more on self defense, including weapons. MMA gyms tend to be geared towards winning UFC tournaments.
