I need a bit of a hand with some terminologies... This form of freestyle karate i do now is Goju based with boxing, aikido, kickboxing rah rah rah, and we use Japanese terminology. I need to know what the following terms mean: Uchi (snapping strikes) Uraken Ganmen Uraken Hizo Uraken s-h-i-t-o Uraken sayu Uraken shomen Shuto Gamnen Shuto Sukutsu Shuto Naka Shuto sukutsu uchi komi Ate (smashing strikes) Jodan Hiji Ate Chudan Hiji Ate Age Hiji Ate Ushiro Hiji Ate Oroshi Hiji Ate Sorry if it takes some time but thanks for any replies.... I know that shuto is knifehand so the other snapping one must best the backfists but i don't know the particulars. Ta! I have a soft spot for kungfu/wushu, i must admit... I always liked the way they fight, and in my younger years the more side-on stances were appealing... Angus

THe point of many anti-kata practitioners is that we can learn all of this stuff more effectively by doing things which are actually related to fighting. Many people see kata as a waste of time. I HAVE to do it now if i want to obtain a pretty little black belt, but i take comfort in the knowledge that i already know how to fight. Angus

Good on ya guys... And that was a very good way of putting it chang. Angus

Gees gumby, you're attacking someone else and even I'M getting annoyed with u... Enough of the bickering or i'll delete the posts and close the thread. Angus

I am sorry, i did not read your entire post, too tired... I don't train toddlers, i don't think they should have any formal martial arts training until at least 10 - and i don't kick banana trees, i kick heavy bags... Kicking a banana tree is dumbstupiddumb. I'm too tired and really not in the mood for searchin but didn't u sy before that u like training in the trad arts and doing it the trad way? That was kinda what i was getting at, that the trad doods do it kinda badly. I'm shtupped, Angus

Chang - there's a difference between easy training, hard training, and stupid training... Hard training is hard and physical and u gety maximum benefits, but it can also be stupid if u do all the old things such as deep squats which are no good for your knees. Us scientific people aren't looking for an easy way out, we still want the hard work, we just don't wanna have stuffed backs and knees at the age of 35. I've seen some traditional stretching stuff and ways of training and it's just stupid. A lot of the horse stance for 2 hours stuff is just crap, it's gonna damage your joins... If u feel pain during exercises then u are hurting yourself, but if u get the 'burn' then u know that u are training more accurately... Hard to explain but there it is, Angus

Everyone does, however, know that the kumite in blood sport was false and a lie, and that Frank Dux is a fraud who made the who damn thing up for the purposes of making money out of his own brand of Ninjutsu - Dux Ryu... He never competed in anything called the kumite, it doesn't exist, and he should be strung up by his short and curlies! I bet Bruce Lee would be turning in his grave at the crap that this bloke was spinning. Angus

Depends what kick... I do lot of thrusting so on a front kick i am upright and perhaps leaning a little forward. Cutting roundhouses are basically from an upright position... On the odd occasion when i do a side kick obviously i lean back... Angus

Won't tap
Angus replied to three60roundhouse's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
We were doing grappling the other night and i had to go with this 15 y/o dude who is like 30kg lighter than me... I'd done BJJ before and he hadn't done anything but using his strength and trying to do locks and stuff... I didn't wanna hurt the dude but he wouldn't submit.... SO the first one ended with me on his back, and him on top. I planted my forearm in the nice soft part of his nick, basically on his adams apple - he couldn't move or do anything. I said "i'm gonna apply more pressure now" and choked as hard as i could and he taped straight away... I could have broken so many of his bones in the second one but didn't want to hurt the kid so we rolled for 10 minutes until i got the mount on him and just made him hold his breath for a while unti the instructor made us stop... He wouldn't tap though, but i know that i could have easily had him out in five seconds, but i knew he wouldn't tap. Tough little bugger though, Angus -
As a sensei at KarateForums.com i have had to try and find a more polite way of stringing the two words *YOU* and *IDIOT* together... I haven't found it yet, but believe me, i am trying, honestly. Explain to me, why can you simply not learn a technique (as practiced in Bunkai) with a partner without having to dance around the room hitting fresh air? Oh, i'm sorry, i'm a young upstart who obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. Even though i have been martial fighter since the age of six (that makes 13 years this thursday - when incidently i turn 19) and have had hundreds of "real fights" and came out on top in most of them (when i wasn't drunk and outnumbered). You can carry on with this rubbishy 'nobody knows the true meaning of kata' bollocks all u want, but the truth is that it is not as effective as sparring, padwork, drills, and partner multisteps. This poor bloke that AO was talking about obviously went to a poor school and was put in his place you AO and his son, but the guy was right in some respects. The Koken or whatever they are strikes with the back of the wrist are USELESS, cat stance is USELESS, deep lunging stances are USELESS, Kata is a good way to practice techniques in fresh air but when it comes to real life contact execution it is USELESS... It's the same with standing in heikodachi and practicing punches like the three level punches and the three level fixed blocking drills. Not once in my life have i used a low groin block or one of those fancy middle kake blocks. I either evade or cautiously deflect. You wouldn't use a piece of paper to stop a bullet from penetraing u would u? No, you'd use a kevlar vest or something - so why stand around using useless stuff to practice with? But, as a contradiction to myself i do Freestyle Karate and study directly under the founder of the style. We do the Goju Ryu kata and all of that stuff. I'm guessing that's only due to the tradition though. In Shihan's 'invitation only' classes we take our gi-tops off and just wear shirts and gi pants. We practice real-life fighting and not once have we done kata in his class... only in the beginner classes that we take. Anyway, i'm sick of typing. So i will say one last thing, that is - we will have to agree to disagree... Angus

Aikido and Realistic Attack

Anon, i don't think he missed the point - unless i missed it too. Was the point u were trying to make that if u practice your kata then your basics should be well defined and u will be able to apply them in sparring. If so i will have to disagree... The only way to learn to fight is to fight. Taste the sweetness of your blood as it fills your mouth after being hit! Experience the joy of spitting it at your opponent!! Ooooohhh, i need a cold shower... Angus

Aikido and Realistic Attack
Angus replied to Shaolin's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Heh, now Changwuji joins the list of people who have no idea what they are talking about. Has everyone forgotten that Rickson Gracie is the champion of the Gracie family? Has everyone forgotten that Helio was a tiny little dude who had been sickly all of his life? (or are we talking about some Helio junior or something?). Shaolin, u don't know what you're on about IN GENERAL... This is the last time i'm gonna say this stuff, cos i'm sick of typing it. TOO MANY PEOPLE TAKE THINGS ON FACE VALUE. Do BJJ with a mind to actually properly learn the techniques and u will find that the principles are the same when u r standing up. Just the other night i was doing some BJJ stuff with some guys at Karate (i was working with a BJJ instructor) and we were doing standup stuff. What the Gracies did was take out all the USELESS stuff that the japanese had in their Jiu Jitsu system and concentrated on the more effective stuff, BOTH FOR SPORT AND SELF DEFENSE. I've never done the Gracie style, i must admit, i've done the Machado BJJ. The Machado brothers are still pretty much the same as the Gracies anyway. I'm not gonna argue the point anymore, i'm just gonna laugh at you. Like this   Angus  -
I'm too nice to people as well.... " I'm sorry mate, did i break your ribs with my kick?... now i feel just awful. But at least it doesn't look as bad as ur nose since i smeared it across you face with that punch... Oh, is this YOUR tooth i found on the floor? Terribly sorry about that man... " Angus

Aikido and Realistic Attack
Angus replied to Shaolin's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Hahaha, it's funny reading stuff that people write when they have no idea what they're talking about. Shaolin, ur too funny dude. It's *B*JJ by the way.. That stands for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I dunno what this GJJ stuff is all about. It's like people seeing SPORT TKD and mistaking it for real TKD... Aikido's great by the way, we apply it in this new freestyle i'm doing. Angus -
Shoot man, martial arts have been a part of my life since i was 6 and i still go out and drink and party and do stupid stuff like that.... But then again i'm not a true martial artist, i'm just like some dude who knows how to 'retire' people. Angus

It's adreniline mate... It courses thru ur body like a drug. I didn't like it at first but once i started getting into more and more fights it was cool... I became an adreniline junkie. It happens to everyone dude, just try and keep a cool head. Angus

AO, what form of karate do u practice? Angus

Not quite the turn around u might have thought...
Angus replied to Angus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Not skill enough anon? Not skilled enough!!!!!! NOT SKILLED ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!! So many relieving words jump to mind that it couldn't possibly take me less than a day to say them all... But i'd like to get YOU drunk and then have two guys go full throttle at YOU before YOU can even think about what YOU are doing u most disagreeable person! I think maybe that black belt had a reason for bashing the crap out of u... Gah!!!! But i'm not gonna hunt these guys down, just if i see them i'm not gonna be offering them any cups of tea. Angus -
Routines are tedious... I eat what i want, i exercise when i want, i drink when i want... I lift some weights, do some classes, watch some movies, read some books... People spend too much time relying on routine, and it sucks... I just feel bad if i don't exercise, so when i do something i actually feel better so that i know i haven't cheated myself that day... Whatever tickles ur fancy though i guess. Angus

Not in agreement Anondude... 5th dans don't have eyes in the back of their heads and some people are just natural fighters. Hell, i got smacked up the other day by two guys that probably didn't have any training and i'm close enough to equivalent 2nd/3rd dan in freestyle kickboxing... i say that based purely on the amount of time i've spent training in the martial arts...
