Shadow boxing... Beneficial?

Imagining your worst enemy or anticipated opponent in front of you can really get things pumping. I never skip on the opponent, otherwise it's too easy. -
Shadow boxing... Beneficial?
GhostlySykanRyu replied to Rick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I shadow box daily as well, best for warming up, stretching, and cooling down. -
If you're new to lifting, get a guide of some sort. Speak to a trainer or experienced person you know. Pick up an M&F mag. Once you get proper form down and keep it, injury isn't likely. I wouldn't take too much lifting advice from strangers to be honest (not saying tha their points aren't valid), lifting if done incorrectly is just as dangerous, if not more dangerous than being foolish with the arts themselves.

Milk is one of the top ten body building foods...it's packed with protein and calcium, what's not to love? I drink 1-2 quarts of it a day, preferably skilm (less fat and not as filling). Not the very best thing if you're on a low-carb diet (which I hope you're not, martial artists expend a lot of energy!), but is definitely a good thing. Atkins also came out with a low carb milk, I only drink it because it has enhanced protein value(14g per serving as opposed to 8g or 9g)...and it's pretty tasty stuff (but filling). If you like I can go through the ol' giant stack and look for the Muscle and Fitness Magazine issue.

Training in Jiu-jitsu
GhostlySykanRyu replied to Oa2k's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Another reason why I'm choosing Jiujitsui...I respect kata and those who implement it, but I don't really believe in it. *shrugs*, it's a matter of personal choice. -
BJJ useful?
GhostlySykanRyu replied to Maddwraph's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Well, if you're choosing a style, then it's really up to what you're interested in and whats available. BTW, I believe Martialman was referring to Finger Trigger Death, or something of that sort. And the EFLAM is past me at the moment, maybe I'm just too tired right now. BJJ has undeniably effective ground techniques...but you might want to learn how to fight standing as well. By what I've seen people who implement it with another art such as Muay Thai, Aikido, or Karate become very successful, because they are well rounded. Some people say that most fights end up on the ground. Still, I'd keep a few things handy in case you need to stay standing...for example; trying to get an effective low (or high for that matter) kicker into clynch position may not be the wisest choise. Personally, I'm about to enter a more traditional Jiujitsui, I think it will cover an assortment of areas, and that's basically what I'm looking for to start my formal training. I will always keep BJJ in mind. Grappling does come naturally to me, it seems more common sense than anything...and anatomy. As for Judo, you may want to research it and see if it suites you. I personally have little interest in it. Whatever you choose, good luck. -
Lactic acid is my best friend:)

Whats do you listen to while you workout?
GhostlySykanRyu replied to Croy's topic in Health and Fitness
I try to keep things quiet during the martial arts training, but when I lift or do cardio it's usually Iron Maiden, AC/DC, or Alice Cooper the original Shock Rocker. If I'm sparring indoors with some one I'll play "Welcome To My Nightmare" just for S**** and Giggles:) -
What did Bruce Lee die from?

"perhaps i should just keep quiet. " Yes, we'd best leave this one alone...I'm tired of being referred to as one of your statistics. *shrugs* -

And you're calling Lee an egotist? You continue to insult him personally, using the mere fact that he was an actor in another attempt to diminish him! "also, you have said before that you have never stepped into a place of training before" -I also recall mentioning that I have sparred often with experienced martial artists as well. "but please have the respect (for us who literally bleed to learn the things we do) to not use words like 'learn' or 'study' when the fact is all you did was read about it. " -Dont'e be so full of yourself, I've applied my skills. You know practically nothing of me. You don't know how intensely I train or how many hundreds of hours I've put in. Your "superior" ways are growing old fast. I tried to end this...and this is what happens. -
Wish I would have gotten one of those instead of busting myself up on the fridge about a hundred times. Oh well, it serves it's purpose. And afater the sand, metal pellets!

I'm only trying to say that a sensei looking over you is not always necessary. The trainer does not mold the student, no matter how he would like to, the student forms himself. I myself am about to enter the dojo now, just to see if theres anything worth absorbing and relating there. Being in this dojo will never make me a Jiujitsui man, entering another will never make me a kareteka or a Judo man. As much as I am interested in the styles, I will never be a Wing Chun or Gung Fu man. I will always be simply myself in my own way. Now for the original topic, I'll reword things and see if that helps. There are Jeet Kune Do dojos, but in a sense they are not. While I do not entirely doubt their validity, there is only one trainer who received consent from Lee. Still, I'm not against them, it's how many are run. As I said, the name of Jeet Kune Do is often used for effect without the meaning ever being realized by the so called instructors. The clone arguement: a bit lopsided. There is a very limited amount of JKD literature, unless you mean it in the thrue sense of what Jeet Kune Do is. In that case, the first clone would have every book written...ever, as Jeet Kune Do requires a constant state of learning and reflection. And if it simply a clone with very little knowledge prior to this, and it's only goal is to fight, then it will have a fair chance, for the first clone will become enveloped in his task endefinitely. Then again, I'm not all for the hypothetical anyway, I prefer to accept or change what is.

LMAO...I'm not joking, I do catch myself in a knife hand at impromptu times.

LOL, not a problem...I just know there are some that aren't too happy with the amount of quotage, didn't know if you were one of them (at the time). As for learning the beltage, I'll just have to start a new thread...

Most definitely...like in my area:few handguns carried as weapons. Less worries for me then!

My now third apologies to you martial man, it may take me a while to get your context style down, as that seems to be the source of most of our conflicts And I'll decrease the quotage... -
Self defense laws

Very good points...I guess I was thinking about things in a more threatening situation. -
Heh, as far as criminals go, aren't they unpredictable? I'm just thinking some situations are just better to avoid, as bullets can't be parried, heh...

Students Learning On Their Own?
GhostlySykanRyu replied to solar_kid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The insurance company made them use armor?!? Wow... -
Actually, no...there is no quote in that post, unless there are some I've never heard of. I'd just like to learn more about the actual belt systems...

What did Bruce Lee die from?
GhostlySykanRyu replied to RONIN W's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
All right, let's clear this up now... "the wong jack man fight offers nothing except that bruce lee won. " -Fair enough, though there were witnesses and there are exerpts. "by all accounts it wasn't even a proper fight (don't romantasise it by calling it a 'battle'). " -And you consider any form of fighting proper? "chasing each other around like little boys? " -It's not a fight I would have taken part in, but much was at stake, and Lee felt the need to teach. The results were his entire life and well being! "i seem to recall something about hitting him in the back of the head? " -If it happened, then so be it. Wong Jack Man must have left the target open. "wong jack man wasn't even a 'rival' as you put it." -True, he was a tool that was supposed to shut Lee down for good. "he was merely someone who stepped up when some guys proposed the fight. " -Stepped up knowing that he could have ended some one's career. Would you not fight fiercely for your well being? yes. like i said. he wasn't exactly an advanced wing chun player. he didn't know what to do, not because of wing chun's failings but because of his own failings in not knowing all of wing chun. -I will concur to a midpoint on this matter. Neither of us know the details, and neither of us know how good Lee really was with Wing Chun...but in studying it, it does seem incomplete, and even before studying Lee I felt that something was missing in everything I read or spoke about involving the arts. "looks like we have another worshipper in our midst" -Looks can be deceiving, the frailest opponent can be the bane of a thousand warriors. I worship only my god. I hold Lee's philosophies in high regards as they work for me, they help me find myself. I came here to help learn of other ways and to absorb what is useful and wise. I did not come here to offend anyone either. "Look like we have another "degrader" also. " -Degrading? I've shown nothing but respect to all martial artists here and in the physical world. I've degraded no one, nor will I. "i call him a worshipper. part of the intent is mockery. part of the intent is to sneer. " -Who have I mocked??? Sneer??? And I'm supposed to be the degrading one? "i don't even care but at least offer good debate. i haven't gotten any of that yet. " -That is your opinion. It seems that you simply do not agree with me though, as my debate is strong, as is your own. "in fact, all i've seen so far is what every other person who falls in the 'worshipper' catagory gives when such topics come up." -If I was a worshipper, then would I not be content to stay as I am? Would I really come here to reflect with other people? If I felt that every word Lee ever spouted was true, would I really care enough to debate with you right now? No. Honestly, my intent was not to offend anyone, and I don't want any flame wars starting here. We have conflicting beliefs, fair enough. I came here to learn and hear your opinions, hearing the degrading of such a great man's skills just set me off a bit. The degrading of ANY martial artist's skills sets me off, as they are not easy to gain. I do realize that I've been speaking of Lee quite a bit...I'll try to bring up more of other things from this point...but still, I cannot bear the insult of any accomplished martial artist, especially one who is not alive to defend hiw own name! So I apologize for any offenses taken, let this end here and now so we can continue our martial journies. -
Nice article... To me belts seem to represent more time in an art than anything(not to offend anyone, it's just my humble opinion, black belts are obviously dedicated...I'm just saying there are whites that could beat one in singular combat). I've sparred with yellow belts through black belts thus far(only up to 2nd dan), and have faired well. To be honest, I'd rather wear a plain leather belt, they seem to keep the pants up more effectively...

Heh, a nice story...though if it is fully true the guy could use a good beating for humility's sake. Methinks it's better if the opponont doesn't know you're a martial artist...and a throat kick? Hell it sounds fun by all accounts, but didn't he think of the risk (IF it did happen)? Didn't he think for one second...hey, this is Fiji, six muggers...isn't it possible that one has a gun pointed at me?
