47MartialMan replied to Sho-ju's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
How does anyone get the title of "Master"? A piece of paper or a particular place certifies this? Are there some type of regulations or set criteria? The martial arts have many areas to "Master" The term is vague. -
Why go for that goal? In time, age will restrict it. There was a recorded conversion Bruce lee had with a aging student whom no longer perform stretches and certain techniques. As for myself, I cannot perform some of the stretches and techniques requiring. But, it doesn't restrict my ability overall.

martial art shoes
47MartialMan replied to sickwithit13's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
If they have to perform away from the school, per a actual combat, what difference does it make? You going to try and remove your shoes? I tell you this, with shoes on it is hard to hit with the ball of the foot. In our self defense class, we tell people to bring in their many types of footwear. Heeled shoes, restrictive shoes, etc. They practice in them. These would be the items on them the moment they have to defend. -
Before I KNEW BETTER, finger types. At the time, they did not hurt. 30 years later, those specific areas ache from time to time. Asking my instructor (one of many), about this, he MADE a liniment and told me I have to apply it for the rest of my life. Not everyday, just when the ache starts. The point, if you do not plan of fighting professionally, to train such areas is almost pointless. Lifestyles of the era, do not need people to train this way. Perhaps in the day, when such was need, per escort and/or bodyguard were sought after. Hitting a bag with the shins may not have any detrimental effects now, it COULD have decades in the future. And, of course, depends on the person. I don't advise against it. I apply the question of why? When you answer that, ask why again. And so forth. Although seemingly like a childish game, perhaps may have you understand the need. When you come to a final answer, let me know.

Obviously, without knowing the material invovled, I cannot comment on it. I don't believe I have claimed that you did... No, you didn't. I enjoy reading your posts.

BJJ and Sambo
47MartialMan replied to delta1's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Yeah, a guy that had trained in Sambo visited our class. Before he joined, he wanted to "workout" with the students. He quickly challenged one of them. After a legal discussion and he was over 21, I said OK, so I let them go at it. After several minutes, way longer than a streetfight will last, he tangled up the first one. The one HE had chosen. I said, good, but I "chose" my champion. A more advanced student. It ended very quickly. The "Sambo" guy, received a blacken eye resulting from the first strike, a basic jab. The eye swelled and teared so much that it efffected his vision and performance. Impressed by us and learning from his loss, he had joined. In the advance class, which I put him in, we exchanged some techniques. He had taught me a few "extra" moves. So I am ALWAYS in the position to learn. He stayed with us until he had moved. He was in my area because he had a scholarship to a University locally. He was a very polite fellow, even when he dropped the first challenge. I don't believe it was out of ego, but he wanted to find out if we had a good method. I am sure he would never forget us, as we, whom knew him, will ever forget. -

47MartialMan replied to ShadowGoomba's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Yeah, I know. I would not call them a "style". But these systems, let's call them SYSTEMS, ARE available from ex-military people who teach martial arts. There are a few out there. They will teach a martial "ART", say like Tang So Do, or other, that they trained in while overseas. Later, for advanced students, teach military applications. These instructors just don't form a "new system", (some do). There are scores of them but are not "hyped". I know I am across three such instructors in my area. One such instructor had many horrible military stories he would tell while teaching these methods. But, all of this was RESERVED fo advanced students. -
Such scams at been advertised for decades. Posted in comic books and martial art magazines.

For Christians, most will "completely" dismiss its existence. I don't "completely" dismiss it Yeah, I am just saying that for Chi/Ki, has a lot of controversy with believers and non-believers, same "analogy" as religion/God. I do not state that either does not exist. But the subject is Chi/Ki and I have to debate it. I respect any/all other opnions on it. Sometimes, I debate using the "devils advocate" or reverse pshycology. I must emphasize, as I always try: I have not "closed-the-book" on Chi/Ki I respect other opnions and try not to personally "bash" them or their authors. Have a great dane day

From certain past information, and per linguistics ever changing per era, the term could have not been used 100-1500 years ago. Chinese, like other languages, over years, developed other dialogues and usage of slang. Per language, old is casted out to make way for new. Rules or meanings are changed. I think the Chinese, from what I understand, now use it out of pride, verbal realtion, identity, generalization, and inclusively. I deinfitely believe it describes Chinese martial arts, but cannot wholly believe this term was used 100's of years ago. Especially, the dialogues of Mandarin, which I had some exposure to.
