Style Vs Style.
Karateka_latino replied to Kensai's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
My instructor took one of his students to compete against Karate in open competion.. Kicks above the waist including the head were valid, no punches to the face, etc... My classmate fought a couple of matches but was disqualifed for hitting "too" hard. In our school we use to spar full contact. but what i saw was that karate guys didn't have good defenses for really fast kicks. My classmate scored easily and everytime he wanted until he was disqualified. Also the those guy were used to "light to non" contact sparring so when they get hit hard, they freak out and don't know what to do. In another time, my instructor was in a Friendly meeting with other instructors and they sparred... Rules were like in NHB, He sparred with a hapkido black belt, shotokan karate, mantis kung fu and capoeira, All the same night and he defeated all them. And one time, my instructor also sparred with two NHB fighters in a seminar, He couldn't take one of them, but he tapped the other. Which is good to me because my instructor is NOT a pro fighter like they were. Im not saying that my style is the best and can beat them all because that depends on the person, but at least i know that if We train hard and long enough we can protect ourselfs when the time comes. -

Ketto Ryu Jujutsu
Karateka_latino replied to Kyle-san's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Never heard of that style.. Well, i think there are around 200 traditional jujitsu styles and i have only heard about a handfull of them. Go and check and post your experience, -
mmatv.com I have mixed opinions about them... i like it because they have lots of interesting topics, Yes. I'm agree with them in some of there ideas about martial arts, Yes. But people there bash too much traditional styles. Too much for my taste. Like other MMA forums they tend to be too disrespectfull to other people's choices. I just dont like closeminded people, neither traditionals or MMA Fans.

The last time i fought was when i was a teenager, lots lots of times. Then, since i started martial arts, i haven't fought again on the streets. Martial arts helped me to get out of the situations without having to fight. My fighting experiences come from Training, and exchanging with diferent martial artists. We even try to fight using freestyle rules allowing to strike and grapple using methods of progressive resistance training, to make it as much real as posible without killing eachother. Im a lover, not a fighter.. lol

Shamrock VS Tito
Karateka_latino replied to Shootfighter's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Shamrock lost?? oh too bad for the Ken -
I think Karate is wide popular as it is now, No need to become an Olympic Sport. Plus, the promotion that is going to have is going to be as an Olympic Karate not traditional Karate. so i still say, Karate for you own sake, stay away from the Olympics.

It depends... on Martial Arts , 4-6 out of 10 Running to the Bathroom after eating some burritos... 15 out of 10

Hi, I don't remember if we have discussed this before, so excuse me if im repeating.. but I found this an interesting subject. Not all styles are perfect, despite how much we want them to be, so in order to educate eachother, be honest and say what do you feel its your martial arts style strong and weak points. I'll be the first... my system is an hybrid freestyle that my instructor call "ho Shin Sul Do". Strong: practical skills, easy to learn techniques, good conditioning, striking AND grappling technquines are worked, Weak: No weapons, NO Ki/Chi, sometimes hard for the body because of full contract training, Also, is Hard for people to accept (usually look for traditional martial arts names like karate, kung fu, etc..), usually linked to the UFC, NHB, (which is bad because people think we train for that)

If the side kick is used to "cut" or "stop" an attack, then i just keep my body erect. If its a side kick to attack, i bent back a little because you have to use your hip.

Karateka_latino replied to rabid hamster's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Yes, Hapkido have fist stikes, fingers thrust, palm strikes, elbows, knees, kicks to the low, middle, high etc.... usually to the weak points of the body or to set up other techniques. Take Hapkido you'll have a great time -
Footwork drills?
Karateka_latino replied to SD's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Shadow box and jump rope are very effective. -
My personal opinion is that if Karate gets to the Olympics it will get ruined as a martial arts. Just like happend to WTF taekwondo and Judo. It will get totally sportive. Just my opinion.
