  1. oh! i almost forgot- tell your students to look up something called LANTUS if they havent heard of it. best * ever.
  2. the device doesnt make it serious- its just an insuline pump. people with type 1 diabetes need either injections daily (more than one) or a constant supply via a pump. its up to the patient how to deal with it- but niether makes it 'more serious' than the other. i really cant think of any way to make sure that sugars are fine during a fight, especially a long one such as a boxing match that goes 10 rounds or something. and not to go off topic, but you have students lucky? how does that work?
  3. hahaha! you guys are too much. the best way i know of to increase your chi is to increase your imagination. tada! my chi just got stronger. (whoa!) and its visible too, but only to me....
  4. i will second that. even once youre experienced in something- be it martial arts, weight lifting, whatever... you can still become too ambitious and set yourself back. (ive been waiting all summer to start lifting seriously with my chest because of my ambition... and im not quite where i should be still.) here are two rules for training you should always keep in mind: 1- if the next day sore to the point of it interfering (meaning you notice it) with normal daily activities (walking around, opening a door, etc) you did too much. 2- if you can no longer do proper form, be it kicking a bag or curling a bar, do not continue. also, just in case youre just starting training, start SLOW. going too slow wont hurt you, but going to fast will.
  5. i dont know much of anything about hapkido- but from what you went over it sounds like a good, well rounded class. what the hell is kibon hyung?
  6. Hey everyone, this is a question for the ring fighters, cage fighters, and whoever else actually takes hits full contact. Im curious, what kind of training do you do to get your abs, obliques, and ribs into shape for taking hits? What has worked in the past and what hasnt?
  7. well, im going to go with the good ol'... anything can happen in a fight, boxers are more than youd think sometimes (not that i give them more than kickboxers), and uh, hell i dont know. maybe that lack of talent you mentioned? could be specific issues too, what was happening to each fighter, etc etc... when it shows on tv they might talk about it, have some "experts" explain hopefully.
  8. so long as they dont claim its for actual fighting, have fun, i say. as for its staying power, i dont think so- but look at this aktins *, you never know how long its fifteen minutes will be.
  9. weight lifting is the most effecient and most effective way of gaining muscle mass. the more muscle mass you have the harder you will hit (provided you train to hit, blahblahblah.) thing is though, you said working on the bench and curling, so i assume that means just your chest and bis primarily. work out your whole body, every muscle is important, even your lats. boxers have huge lats- its not just for show.
  10. becase jumping rope requires more energy than pushups, genius. the same simple principle can be applied to explaining why youre more out of breath running at 10mph than 7mph. (it takes more energy.) anyway, both are great, but swimming is more difficult, and less hard on your joints, not to mention a better muscular workout (except probably for your legs.)
  11. arent "the way you train" and your "style" the same thing.
  12. so... it starts off like a karate class with the gis and all that, and as people progress they end up doing what youre doing now? does your school have an official website?
  13. yea, its a real love/hate thing with sapp with me... same reason- him being just an oddity. kind of like the big strong guy whos slow but powerful in a video game or something. basically i like him as a different kind of opponent to someone i want to see win.
  14. theyre not the same. however, with training, you will get better at what youre trying to do. i used to not be able to run 15 minutes on a tredmill, now thats nothing. same thing going on a heavy bag. anyway, because im an avid fan, and you seem to be up for it, go look at mma (muay thai/bjj or whatever) and see how you like it.
  15. i think youll find that learning multiple styles isnt as advantageous as it seems. if you like your karate and are learning from it, stick with it. if you dont like it, of course find something else- but list out specifically what you want to get out of it. the only additional style(s) id recommend picking up would be some form of grappling- assuming of course that your karate doesnt do any.
  16. did you hear about some new guy, i forget his name, whos supposed to be 6'5'' and 380? the guy was telling me about him, and unlike sapp, he apparently kicks as well as punches.
  17. lucky- im curious. is american kenpo karate the only style youve ever learned? ive only had limited experience with anyone doing kenpo, but it didnt seem to be taught the way youre describing it. what organization are you affiliated with, and how many others are actually professional fighters as you are?
  18. for me, its just plain fighting.
  19. doesnt the army teach you some sort of boxing/kickboxing stuff?
  20. sometimes the body/mind just needs a break. listen to it.
  21. yea- some religions incorperate meditation, but it in itself is not a religion, and doesnt necessarily have anything to do with one.
  22. so im at work today (in vegas) and there are these three big guys who look like power lifters or something at the store next to mine. one is flirting with this girl, another is waiting on him so i ask him: whats up with all the big guys. turns out they had all tried out for k1 amateur fights or something like that. what was amazing was just how huge these guys were! they looked like body builders under their clothes- and one guy who was several inches shorter than me, yet about three times as strong im guessing, i outweighed. quite a humbling experience. (i decided not to ask them to show me any moves). it was pretty neat though.
  23. maybe you could stick with the karate for a few years (apparently its a good system youre benifiting from) and do mt some time later. as for bjj, id say its one of the best grappling styles, so if the school is good id recommend going for it. also, bulking up doesnt slow you down until you get to someone like bob sapps size.
  24. you know, i dont really have that problem because i love whtaever im doing so much. i actually have to make myself leave, because be it in the weight room, on the tredmill, on the heavy bag, or whatever- i want to do more when my body has allready done enough.
  25. shorinju! yes, finally! another person who knows the value of a punch in the nose! i like you. after that, my favorite is the throat- thats a fight ender right there.
