Defending yourself against guns from a distance?
Luckykboxer replied to a topic in Martial Arts Weapons
dang Ramymensa I forgot all about the mystical sunday morning kung fu theater techniques. Thanks for reminding me -
you will have an almost impossible time renting a car at 18, most car rental companies in the us will not rent unless you are 25. how long are you going to be here? even the cheapest smallest most gutless rental cars are about 30 dollars a day. If you are going to be lugging around clothes and things you might want to look at a mid to late 90s sedan, can possibly get something fairly dependable for about 4000-5000 dollars and then when you are done sell it, even if you sell it at 2500, and you are here for 3-4 weeks you come out ahead. Insurance companies can insure you for probably 100-200 for a one month period. they will want you to sign up for 6 months, but you can ust pay the 1 month start and then not pay again, they just cancel your coverage after that and there are no contracts. all you have to have in the US is... registration... Insurance.... I have no idea what it would cost for a foreign citizen to register a car.. but I am sure it wouldnt be that big a deal to buy a car and float it for a month or so and then sell it when you leave.

Defending yourself against guns from a distance?
Luckykboxer replied to a topic in Martial Arts Weapons
there is no way. You have to at that point get away or get to safety somehow. Put something or many somethings between you and the gunman. give yourself a way to back out and still keep something between yourself and the gunman. Dont stop. dont stay put. this is all assuming you are not responsible for any other lives around you. If you have others around you in this situation then the problems increase dramatically because then you not only have to dodge the gunman but keep him away from others as well -
What is the best Martial Art for you and why?
Luckykboxer replied to Spielwurfel's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
hehe... I would have to Chose Kenpo Karate. Its an evolving art that incorporates the best techniques from all styles. as long as it is an evolving art. what i mean is there are so many kenpo instructors adn some have not evolved the art at all adn still teach Ed Parkers complete original system. I dont think Ed Parker meant for that to happen, he himself wanted the art to evolve with the times. True Kenpo now days takes into account all bodystyles and adapts the art to match the bodystyle and make it the most effective for each person. I cant figure how you can do better then that. I am not saying any other art isnt great... Hell i am sure that many arts teach many of the same moves. I believe the way Kenpo is taught leads me to favor it. I have visited classes in many other arts... I just have not been able to spend enough time in any of the other arts, or with enough different instructors of those arts to get a good sense of the arts as individual systems. where as with Kenpo, I have had the priveledge of working with dozens and dozens of instructors. -
How many students at your club?
Luckykboxer replied to aefibird's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
we have approximately 450ish students at our studio. we include in our curriculum Boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Kenpo Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Tai Chi, Yoga. Some people do 1 style only, some do multiple. The majority of our students are in the Kenpo Karate portion of the curriculum. The school has been open for 20 years now, and all told i would estimate we have about..30 Instructors here -

Hands considered deadly weapon?
Luckykboxer replied to drunkenninja's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
well yes and no. a trained martial artist will avoid more situations and will be able to keep himself out of trouble more then jo blo will. also will be able to handle small situations better then Jo Blo will. when it gets serious will have a better chance of coming out better then jo blo. self defense is self defense no matter how you cut it. the problem is when a trained martial artist has a situation under control then takes advantage of it to inflict harm when he could have safely walked away. i dont consider that self defense, i consider that assault. Now myself I feel that some people deserve it, but that still is against the law. if soemone chooses to break the law, they have to be ready to face the consequences -

have you watched Jackie Chans outtakes, or anything on him? He is his own Coreographer. And I would be surprised if he ever takes more then a few takes to get things right. I dont know why you hate Jackie Chan so much, but i find it surprising. He has done alot to elevate the martial arts through film. He has brought as much attention to the martial arts in the last 20 years as almost anyone else i can think of, I would think that deserves some credit. I understandyou dont respect his fighting skills, but regardless I would still put him in the top 5% or more of the worlds population as a fighter, adn probably as high as the top .5% anyway you look at it it still makes him an elite fighter -

it reminds me of when i was in junior high school and we allw anted to be the toughest kids and we played a game called bloody knuckles. where we would rack each others knuckles with our own knuckles until someone bled or quit.. I have no idea what i was thinking back then so dont ask :/ -

well... it depends... are the out of shape people the white belts and lower ranks? are they the intermediate ranks? or are they the advanced ransk and black belts? if its the begining ranks then its great, it means they are wanting to do something to get in shape... and are making an attempt. if its the intermediates, then it could be anything from lack of a good training regiment at the studios, to a studnet either getting back in after a long layoff, or getting unmotivated and gettting ready to quit. if its the advanced then its either a really serious lack of training regiment at the school, or its a lazy black belt sitting on his laurels and just telling students what exercises to do rather then doing it with them, or a black belt that doesnt train at all anymore. I am sure there are lots of other explanations, but thats from my own personal experience
-
let me ask you a question. Why do you want to get your black belt before you graduate high school? if there is a valid reason and you discuss it with your instructor, and if he agrees that it is valid, it is possible he may work with you to help make that possible. He is the best judge after all of your skills, and how long it takes to master the art. If nothing else he can tell you what you will have to do to meet that goal. as with anything else in life to accomplish goals you need to know what they are, why you want them, and then how to get there.. wrk it out and im sure you will do well

atm i eat almost anything placed in front of me.. but then im not on my fat burning of lean down phase atm, ive just been increasing my metabolism. When i do enter my "diet" phase though... probably in another week or two this is a sample of what i will be eating. I am currently 6'3" and approx 250... when i am done i will be about 215..hopefully the same height.. 7am - 8 egg whites, 2 yokes, 1/2 cup of oatmeal, banana 10am - protein shake 1pm - 1 chicken breast, 1 cup broccoli/cauliflower/carrots, low carb/higher protein shake. 4pm - 20 carb/40 protein shake. 7pm - 0 carb/40 protein bar. 10pm 8 ounces of extra lean ground beef, or lean steak, or ostrich, or chicken, or turkey, 1 cup of greens. my total carb intake will be about 100 grams at most and thats only because i need the energy for training. I have done this diet several times, and i tend to lose about 30 pounds in 30 days, give or take. now realize at this point i have been eating about 2-3 times the calories per day before i diet, and i will also be taking thermogenics and vitamins and minerals while i am dieting. I wouldnt recommend it to many people though... by about the 4th or 5th week if i go that long i am little more then a machine that eats, sleeps, trains, and well you know. I rarely do a casual diet.... i usually only diet a couple months before i get into competing, and usually stay in shape while im competing, during the offseason i eat pretty much whatever i want. during the times i am competing my meals are pretty open, i just make sure im eating 6 times a day, and eating lower carbs, never more then 25 carbs per sitting, the protein pretty much takes care of itself as i am never hungrey enough to eat more protein then my body can handle. my biggest issues are sodas, and chocolate though... im weak :/

Date of birth 7 April 1954 I imagine Jackie Chan coming out of the womb, slipping past the doctor, climbing up the IV machine, doing a flip off of it onto a gourney and sliding through the hallways of the hospital screaming... AYYYYIIIEEEEEEEEE But ya i have no doubt that his athletic skills and acrobatic skills alone would make him formidibale let alone any martial arts he knows I find it very encouraging that you see athletes and actors and peopel in general being productive and active much later in life now days. For Jackie Chan to move like he does at 50 is amazing.. to see pro baseball players pitching perfect games in their 40s. to see professional fighters winning world titles in their 40s.. very encouraging indeed -
I am working on a black belt project involving the history of martial arts from start to present and all branches of it. It may be a project i never finish, but it is one i am approaching full on. I am looking for good books on the history of martial arts, preferably true history and not fantasy... sometimes it is hard to know the difference from what i have started running into. Any and all sources would be appreciated, also if people have old books they are not wanting i am interested in buying any and all books of quality i can find regardless of the martial art. One of my dreams for my studio is to have as complete a library on martial arts as i can find. Videos and DvDs as well. from instructional, to fights, to movies, etc. thanks

questionable thought?
Luckykboxer replied to yireses's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
well i think one thing that people dont think about when they are complaining about belts is the following. martial arts for these instructors has to be a full time affair. what i mean is the truely great teachers of any martial art do it all the time, they dont do it as a hobby. Sure you can probably get the occasional good instruction from a teacher that has a day job selling copiers, or selling cars, but i dont think it will be close to a full time instructor. now the cost of living, especially in the united states is high enough that to make a living and support yourself with any kind of lifestyle you ahve to do one of a couple things. either A. be independantly wealthy so you do it for the love of the art. B. have a few students who are willing to pay your living and be as hard core or traditional as you want to be. C. have many students paying reasonable rates. now the problem is unless you find some extremely wealthy people who want to be traditional and pay you several hundred dollars a month you have a problem. Most people do not have the mental fortitude to stick with something long term without seeing results of some kind. over the years it has been a proven fact that when you add belts, add stripes to the belts, and give peopel smaller goals to reach they stick with it longer and you have a more successful school. now you are always going to have those people that are going to do it no matter what, for however long it takes, just for the love of it. Generally speaking its never enough to pay the bills. the largest segment for any martial arts are kids, and kids require constant motivation. Hence the belts. Sure you can have a traditional kung fu school....a traditional Karate school(2 belts white and black)... a traditional fighters school.... or whatever you want.. and i can probably guarantee that your school will be one of the best at what it is you are trying to do... all three of you! Its an unfortunate side effect in my mind of the cost of living going up. I am sure back in the days when these traditions were the law that the schools didnt have much in the way of bills, and the masters didnt have much in the way of needs. Students devoted their lives or portions of it to nothing but training. Unless you are in thailand at a muay thai camp, in Japan at some of the live in schools, in china in the live in schools.... I cant imagine this working anywhere. That is my take on it. I can very well be wrong. But from all the studys i have done, all the interviews i have done, and all the thought i have put into it this is what i have come up with. I dont think that adding this measure to any system will taint that system. As long as the instructors are making sure the students are "earning" and learning all the curriculum, and are not just selling belts.
