actually i am pretty new in white crane, i just started it 3 months ago,(i used to practice in shorin tyu styles but not matsumura saito, mostly kenshinkai, matsubayashi, shorinkan) , by chance i met sensei thampson in sensei keller(Linda) school teaching white crane, i love the style and in last 3 months i have worked on first 8 katas,(shorinji sanchin,Ni ju ken,shu tsru ken, ryushu ken,Matsumura Hakutsuru sho, Hi tsru ken, paihoe, tsuru sanchin), it's a pitty that a knee injury doesn't let me spar with sensei thampson he is a Gold mine. sensei thampson told me we may all move to Matsumura seito style under sensei lindsey. i guess i'll see you some times this year in sensei lindsey s dojo.

there is no written way of kicking, as a karate-ka we have to adapt or techniques according to our body, i don't risk doing side kicks with my right anymore due to a knee injury.if you can't kick with ball of the foot try to learn toe kick, there been some geart masters with ability of strong toe kicks, my sensei has a very strong toe kick just by spending lots of time practicing.

ONE TROOF, yes i am part of white crane group under sensei Thompson in Houston, how about you?any white crane or just matsumura seito?
-
No, their patch only says "kara Te"

i don't like it we they say 5th degree black belt, without saying the style or back ground.as far as sparring as "ShorinRyuu" mentioned there is no rule, depends on sensei, my old sensei wouldn't have let us to spar that much, in new dojo we use the protective hear gear and gloves and we go all the way even to the ground with no "yame".

Matsubayashi opens the sandan directly into Naihanchi dachi(wider than us)by moveing the left leg. the picture i posted shows Seibukan founder. i recently changed my steping in Nihanchi, let's say i wanna step to the right from Naihanchi to Naihanchi,I turn to a short Nanami zenkutsu dachi just by turning my right foot outward(on the heal while i am shifting my weight to the right leg and my left foot just started it's move) then i step , i saw sensei thampson does this ,when i do this i feel my steping is smoother and faster. i used to keep my right foot in nauhanchi or straight while steping to right. try it and tell me what you think.

here is a picture of Nanami Zenkutsu dachi, at the opening of Naihanchi Sandan http://www.toyei.com/BookDescription.html

if you wanna do Anan , do the original Ryuie ryu version it won two world titles, there is a short clip in https://www.wonder-okinawa.jp , you can buy the tape too, if sensei konishi learned Anan from Sensei Mabuni then they should be very close, all the Anan i have seen are almost the same in first half,I like the ryuie ryu version since the stances are higher and techniques are more complicated, anyway i think all the versions of Anan are good enough to win a competition.
-
that matsubayshi ryu kusanku is chatan yara no kusanku, your kusanku is itosu kusanku dai originally but there are some blocks and turns you do different, check this one https://www.wonder-okinawa.jp there is a kusanku dai from itosu lineage.

with all the respect i have for you,I am totally disagree here, these light dance stances in your eyes happened to be the original stance in the original forms, it's funny that you think kokutsu dachi in Heian Nidan is combative and high stance of Pinan shodan is like a dance, do you realy think that two blocks(outside inside and middle block) of Bassai Dai in zenkutso have ever been used in a real fight, I guess choki mutobo never can't pass the Naihanchi kata under your eyes since his naihanchi-dachi is too high to be combative like Kiba-dachi, from one side you all talking about the importance of kata as a tool to learn how to fight, from other hand you justify your dead static stances as a tool to make a karate-ka stronger and faster. we fight the way we do our kata, you fight like us but you do your kata in other way and still think kata teaches you how to fight. IMHO okinawan kenpo or karate is in combative side and yours is sport side. i don't wanna start a fight over my MA is better than yours ,so i am gonna leave the last word to you.

Shorinryuu, what other katas you've seen from chuck chandler?
-
Toshihiro oshiro , he is good to my eyes but Sensei Thompson found some flaws in his techniques he thinks Sensei lindsey is way higher than this guy in sparring.
-
this is how we do it in Naihanchi dachi steps, We turn the front foot on the heel a little bit outward, then we step in.
-
thanks, it did. although i have the tape.
-
why is this a .DAT file, how can i open it?

let me give you a example last year we been practicing some grappling on a hard floor dojo, i was hanging on this guy ,he tried a ashi barai ,I swept under his sweep and boom he was on the floor , he did it again and boom on the floor , then i thought this is not good i'll let him to do his technique, then boom i was on the floor with a cracked rib, took me about a year to heal since I was practicing BJJ at the time, now last night we been grappling again, and i being a nice guy after some grappling with a young kid decided to put me hand out of my chest so this young guy can do a arm bar ,after a while that he was not seeing the opening he finaly moved for this arm bar , but he did so bad and jerky that messed up my elbow now i am sitting here ,typing with one hand, surly nobodys fault but me. God knows when it's gonna heal.

thank you very much for this good article, i'll read it again later and may have some questions for you.

Shorin Ryuu , you are right, Tsuru Sanchin is a shuri kata through matsumura family style, i got it from sensei Lindsey and sensei Thampson. the tension in crane katas is kinda soft ,not in the muscles rather in tendons, at wrist and forearms.
-
I put Sanchin and Naihanchi together, tekki may look like Naihanchi but can not be compare with other two, totally other range of muscles are involved.to my understanding Sanchin and naihanchi creates power by twisting the legs and rolling up the abdomen they keep the energy inside. they teach how to generate power from abdomen and how to redirect the tension, in okinawa they used to call naihanchi dachi , ippon sanchin dachi, now Miyagi version of sanchin doesn't have the depth of Higaonna sanchin, i consider the later a combative kata but Miyagi version is not combative , to me Miyagi version is important since teaches me how to control my breathing. i also use it instead of push ups, I practice a version of sanchin called Tsuru Sanchin which has the same tension and is combative too, this one teaches me how to attack from very close range from a static stance. compare to Naihanchi , sanchin has less grappling inside it , so far i prefer naihanchi over sanchin although I keep the fondumental of sanchin in back of my head while doing my naihanchi. i guess there is lot to talk about here.

pavotori, well come to K.F. Kosho ryu in his original form has any katas? where is the origin of Kosho ryu? if japan then why is it considered to be kempo? why not jutsu, I have 2-3 tapes of sensei Juchnik and love his technique.
