Ok, nvm about this thread. After a hard time searching I've found two schools that teach shorin ryu (one of them matsubayashi), another one that teaches chuan fu kajukenbo, and one of the shorin ryu schools also teaches urufu by an impressive looking teacher (though still could be fake... whitwwolfmartialarts.net ). So, I just need to choose between these arts.

One thing a lot of people don't realize is that you need rest days. Often what a lot of professionals will do is work 6-12 weeks in a row, and then take off an entire week from training. It really does help, and at the same time it's not long enough to hurt what you've put it, in fact it'll make you all the better. -
Within the next few months (once I finally find a buyer for my house and move) I'll be training in two schools, one that teaches Shindo jinen-ryu karate, boxing, and kickboxing (I e-mailed them for more info about their boxing/kickboxing styles. the owner said they had professional boxers/kickboxers training so it has to be decent). The other school is a MMA school teaching basically their own style of muay thai/kickboxing and bjj (they are of no organization) and train a lot of cops. My question is, if both of these schools are legit, which I'm only able to find out once I get out there, if I study mostly in just the styles offered at these schools will that be enough to learn effective street self defense if I apply myself enough to it and study long enough? And so you all can add this in to your determination, a little over an hour from me in portland, you can name any art, and most likely there will be a school there that teaches that art. Reason I'm looking more into the schools I mentioned is because they're under 20 minutes from the locations my parents chose to live in. But, if I can't learn self defense from the options given to me at my new location I'll be willing to drive up an hour 2-4 times a week for lessons.

Reasons for training in martial arts

I think a lot of us either wanted to learn MA initially for self defense or to show off or to fight. -
Awesome, thanks aodhan.

List of most deadly martial arts

There's already a thread like this, do a subject line search for "top 10" -
Congrats, did you pass meaning you're now at white belt or passed meaning you're no longer at white?

How can you attain shoulder flexibility? I can't for the life of me do certain olympic lifts due to lack of shoulder ROM

I also have no knowledge of Choy lee fut, I guess I'm just posting to say I agree with italian guy, wing chun is known for a good self defense art, if thats what you want. If you want a more self defense oreiented version of TKD to impress your friends and have a little bit of self defense also, go with northern shoalin.

Talk to your sensei, if he says you can use the techniques from your previous styles, then use them, if he says you need to work on only the techniques of goju-ryu, then use only goju ryu. If you want to spar using both styles and your sensei won't let you, just find some guys who want to spar with you outside the dojo using whatever techniques everyone knows.

1st Professional bodybuilders lift for looks, not functionality. Just how it is. 2nd I never said body builders aren't strong. In fact the forum I used to be a part of had several pro body builders put together a routine based upon compound movements to gain size and functional strength. It worked wonders for building size and functional strength. But most of them didn't do nearly as much cardio as they should have to get endurance or a healthy heart. And the kind of strength that it takes to bench press 300 pounds is a different kind of strength from the kind needed to execute a fast and powerful punch. Bodybuilders stress going slow when doing a set of any kind of exercise. It builds muscle better. If you compare a 1st dan in okinawan karate's kick (below belt) to that of a body builder who can deadlift or squat more than 600 pounds, the karateka would have a stronger kick, the karateka trains purely for the ability to kick with power and speed, not to develop slow twitch muscles by lifting incledible weight. Granted though if the body builder were to go into BJJ or wrestling he could definitely use his size and kind of strength to his advantage. And body builders are not excellent athletes except in their own arena (showing off size, being able to lift a great amount of weight, and being able to get their fat% down to below 5%). They make sure they don't do more cardio than what is required to either get rid of fat, or maintain their fat %. Other than that, all they do fitness wise is lift weights. Ametuer body builders may do other activities such as some sports occasionally, perhaps take up MA also, but if they're serious about body building, they won't. Doing that much cardio gets rid of excess muscle, and they want as much size as possible.

True, I should have said perfect practice. Ok, just practice the technique PROPERLY, as in, stress proper form as opposed to power, and eventually you'll get the power you want.
-
If you haven't been doing MA for more than a few years (unless you practice every day for an hour or more) and if you're right handed, then you're left roundhouse, or really any left leg kick will be weaker for a while than your right. Just be patient and practice, eventually you'll get to where you want to be.

How do these two styles relate to each other? From what I've read on these forums, these two styles seem to be considered the "deadliest" or "most effective" street styles. I personally would go with Kajukenbo due to the fact that I've heard more that san soo doesn't spar nearly as much and that originally Emperado(do I have the right name?) made his classes physically tough, wanted his students to be able to take a pucn/kick and be in top physical condition.
