The reason though that cross training is so effective is because you get different philosophies and ideas. Kata, the way you kick, the way you grab someone to do a throw or lock are just the outward part of MA. The true nature is about the reasons behind the techniques. And to adress the post about MT, reason MT is such a great art to learn is because of how tough you have to be to be a part of it. They do as much conditioning/fitness as they do training of techniques/actual fighting. And BJJ, basically cause a lot of tough guys like BJJ and knowing what to expect is an awfully good advantage.

It really takes no more than 20-40 minutes a day 6 days a week to workout to stay in great shape (depending on what you do of course). In fact, studies have shown that if you work out (practicing MA isn't exercise imo) more than 45 minutes a day, the time after 45 minutes isn't doing anything for you. Considering this is true I don't see why someone couldn't spend 20 minutes a day in the morning or evening working out to stay in awesome shape.

If this is inappropriate my apologies... Saturday morning ... Bob's just about to set off on a round of golf when he realizes that he forgot to tell his wife that the guy who fixes the washing machine is coming around at noon. So Bob heads back to the clubhouse and phones home. 'Hello?', says a little girl's voice. 'Hi, honey, it's Daddy', says Bob. 'Is Mummy near the phone'? 'No, Daddy. She's upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Frank'. After a brief pause, Bob says, 'But you haven't got an Uncle Frank, honey!' 'Yes, I do, and he's upstairs in the bedroom with Mummy!' 'Okay, then. Here's what I want you to do ... put down the phone, run upstairs and knock on the bedroom door, and shout to Mummy and Uncle Frank that my car's just pulled up outside the house'. 'Okay, Daddy'. A few minutes later, the little girl comes back to the phone. 'Well, I did what you said, Daddy!' ' And what happened?' 'Well, Mummy jumped out of bed with no clothes on and ran around screaming, then she tripped over the rug and went out the front window and now she's all dead'. 'Oh, my God .... and what about Uncle Frank?' 'He jumped out of bed with no clothes on, too, and he was all scared and he jumped out the back window into the swimming pool, but he must have forgot that last week you took out all the water to clean it, so he hit the bottom of the swimming pool and now he's dead, too'. There is a long pause, then Bob says ...........'Swimming pool? Is this 854-7039?!!!

I would not go as far as to say boxing is the best to crosstrain in. It certainly is a good art to crosstrain in, but not be the best. It really depends upon what your core style is and what experience you've had in other arts.

You don't know anything about martial arts if....
CapitalKarate replied to greenbelt_girl15's topic in General Chat
If... You see a confused look on their face when you ask "O, you take karate? what karate style?" When you ask to spar to see how good they are they get into a stance they created and start making bruce lee ki-ai's...(they sound morelike squaks to me though...) -

Does anyone else's feet stick to the floor when training...
CapitalKarate replied to rivergirl's topic in Health and Fitness
Powder, and kind of weight lifting powder. I don't have this problem though because for the past 8 years I've kept items of clothing off of my feet as much as possible, even when going outside on asphalt on a 100+ degree day, or on sharp rocks with bits of glass between them. I basically do everything outside (except for church and occassions where I must wear shoes) barefoot so as you can expect, my feet are like two big caluses(sp?), I can't feel a thing on the sole anymore and they don't perspire at all. -
How's this for toughening up...
CapitalKarate replied to CapitalKarate's topic in Health and Fitness
Fangshi, the problem is this.... I don't have a good partner at all. I am the only one in my family who cares about MA, and I don't have any friends in my dojo right now who are as serious about their training as I am. Thought hopefully once I move and get into the new dojos, I'll find a few fellows who want to seriously toughen up and fight a lot (with each other, as little padding as possible, and going full force so it's as realistic to a street fight as possible). Granmasterchen, I'd really like to hear about these exercises you do that are so dangerous. -
what to do against a opponet wildly swinging?
CapitalKarate replied to Rock-fght's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
lol, I'd feel sorry for any fool who messed with cqb... as for me, it depends on the area, if it's relatively open do boxing type manuvers, just stay on my toes and hop around until he either gives up, or gets tired, if it's the latter and he still wants to hurt me, I'll fake some kind of jab or something and do a stomp kick to his solar plexus and either hold him there until the police arive or just walk away. But if he has friends... clinche him and get a hold of one of his hands and break a finger or his thumb then throw him to the ground and get ready for the next guy. -
Any other girls like this- or just me?
CapitalKarate replied to elila's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Generally in my dojo my sensei put the girls with the girls for sparring and guys with guys. He didn't want the girls getting hit somewhere inappropriate by a guy who wasn't trying to hurt them. -
Hope you do well!

I'm so happy my career choice is a LEO/SWAT, I get paid to stay in shape!

How? You're just sitting there. Isn't it the horse that's getting a workout?

I would think though that they have have at least 20 minutes to do like circuit training or something similar to maintain muscle endurance while also maintaining fat% or decreasing it. After all, what good's knowing MA if you're not in good enough shape to use it?

BTW, off topic but, where in BC do you live?

You raise some interesting thoughts CQB. I think I have a new approach on videos (not instructional books, sorry, need to at LEAST see someone moving). I think it might actually be better to train with videos (along with personal training) than without. Take traditional karate for example, I think it would be very beneficial for a teacher to make a video demonstrating all the kata he teaches and one steps. Or create a website and have clips on it of him/her performing certain kata for the student to watch in case he/she doesn't remember a certain move so that theydon't have to have the instructor go over it again in class to waste the time they should be using to learn new material or work on other aspects. Thanks for having me see that CQB!

From what I've seen, most MA instructors are overweight or have a slight pot belly, why is this so?
