Training with/for knee problems
CapitalKarate replied to ChevyCowgirlRSG's topic in Health and Fitness
Ask your doctor if doing squats will damage your knees or not, not hurt them, damage them. If he says they won't get damaged, then perform squats regularly and see if it helps, and make sure they're ATF squats. -
Psilokan, everyone has 8 abs, it's not a matter of genetics, how your abs look when they finally show from having very low BF% is about genetics, not whether or not they show. That's all about BF%. And the top abs are really not that much smaller than any of the other ones except the lowest abs.

Leg extensions and leg curls are not important at all, in fact they're a waste of time. And they've been proven to be damaging to the knees. They were mostly created for body builders, just stick with compound weight movements and increasing cardio activity.
-
hmm... never thought of it like that, I always thought high kicks were just a waste of time all together. Would you guys ever use a high kick to the face in a real conflict?

If thats true for krav maga and not just haganah then I really want to train in krav maga along with other styles. I much prefer up close and personal standing doing stand up grappling and striking. But, I want to know what to do if it goes to the ground and how to get up fast. Also I don't necessarily agree with some disarming techniques in KM, if some guy comes up to me to rob me with a gun, I'm going to just give him what he wants, not try to disarm him. Granted though once he turns his back and gun away from me, he's mine, but I don't like the idea of trying to disarm him while he's aiming at me.

except there's no sparring in ninjutsu cause "someone might get killed" (got that from an 8th dan bujinkan instructor, not myself) -
I'm sick of english bands... then again, I'm also the person who will refuse to get onto the bandwagon only because everyone else is.

I'd ask that I get an uzi and that everyone there get in a line and hold still no matter what happens for 5 minutes lol

True, compared to other women ones who lift will be more built (barely), and sculpted, but still only on the lean side. And if they really are afraid of getting "larger" all they have to do is add more long distance cardio and there ya go, a bit of the size in muscles will go away. Personally, I wish women would not care as much how they look and just try to get fit. BTW aodhan, congrats on your belt promo.

Actually aodhan what you spoke about is what I'm saying is false. No matter how hard women lift weights, they will never get bulky unless they intake an insane amount of protein, have abnormal hormones, or take supplements. It just won't happen cause they don't have testosterone. It's better for both genders to perform high weight low rep movements (not the isolating body building time wasting movements) PLUS bodyweight high rep movements (don't waste your time doing low weights, if you want repetition, do repetition body weight exercises). Also powerlifting isn't doing the absolute most weight possible all the time. The difference between the three kinds of lifts (body building, power, and olympic) is body building tends to lift just for looks, they do isolation exercises to get large and normally intake a lot more protein and supplements as to build the muscle. Power lifting is basically three movements; Bench press, Squat, Dead lift, and routines for powerlifting normally are built to help the user increase as much as possibly the weight he's moving using whatever techniques prove to be useful. Olympic lifting is essentially two major lifts, the snatch and the clean & jerk, and I think almost ten minor lifts designed to help you build up to doing the major ones or to help you lift more when doing the two major ones, minor ones would be, overhead squat, cleans, jerks, front squats, back squats, push presses, that sort of thing. If what you really want is to get rid of fat deposits in your inner thighs, do lots of cardio, both exercises that last an hour as a steady slow pace, and high intensity inverval exercises. The latter have been proven to get rid of fat and increase both aerobic and anaerobic endurance while also not losing strength which often happens with long endurance exercises (running for an hour, swimming for an hour, biking for an hour. etc...)

Krav maga is a good self defense art, but I think it's better for immediate learning of self defense, I'd put my money on a person studying krav maga for 2 years over someone in okinawan karate for 2 years, but if I changed it to both practitioners had 10+ years of experience, I'd put my money on the Okinawan Karateka no doubt. Plus Krav Maga doesn't put teaching into "in case you get taken to the ground" techniques. I mean, I'm never going to take someone to the ground for my own self protection (law enforcement yes, but not self defense) but it'd good to be able to know what to do if you get taken down to the ground.

Training with/for knee problems

Ahh, forgot about the second/third opinion thing. Yeah, do that first. If doc says it's ok, do em, if he says don't, ask other docs. Good thinking Aodhan -

Some doctors are really dumb. There's going to be idiots in every profession. -

A lot of people if they know how to deflect a side kick. The point is you need to be effective in all areas of combat, stand up, ground, striking, grappling. Better to be good at all of them than to be ultimate in one, people can always find a way to deflect or counter your "perfect move". Hudini (I think it was), was said to be able to take a hit to the gut from any no matter how strong, every man who tried to hit him couldn't hurt him, when he was flexing his abs. Well, one day while Hudini was talking to someome or doing something, an average built guy came from behind him, tapped on Hudini's shoulder causing him to turn around and surprised him with a hit to the gut. He got severely damaged by this and I don't know how many hours later he died. No one, while he was ready, could hurt him with a hit the the stomach, so someone figured out how Hudini did it, and found a way to counter it. If (for example) you have the best side kick ever, someone will find a way to counter it to get to a close enough range so that you can't execute a side kick. -
A perfect martial art?

This is what I call a perfect style; Incorporates all aspects of martial arts (hand striking with all sides and in all manners, kicking with all parts of the legs, knee strikes, elbow strikes, grappling in any position [standup, clinch, ground], throws, take downs, pressure points, joint locks [all joints], i think there's something else that I forgot) Feels that fitness is as important as the learning the techniques. Along with conditioning to take a hit anywhere. Performs all levels of sparring and starts with all levels once you have a good enough grasp on the basics (and there not being a set level at which you start sparring). Has only 3 belts; white, brown, black. Is willing to accept techniques from other arts when they prove valuable (or in other words is always changing so to keep up to date) Is willing to give a leave of absence to people when they prove lazy so that the teacher can focus on training the ones who really want to learn. Does a lot of heavy bag work. Trains knowing that you could be in any kind of area during any kind of conditions including a terrain where it's raining and it's unstable ground because of it, being on a slope at any angle, being on stairs, lying in bed, squating, taking a dump (hey, it's happened!).. e.t.c. Now, I'll use thise as an example of how there's no perfect style. Some people don't see full contact without protection on as a safe thing to do, some would say my wanting all aspects of fighting is a waste of time, some greatly enjoy a list of belts that require specific attention on to remember them all. That's how there's no perfect style. -
The only thing I can think of are calf raises, and if you don't have weights than one legged calf raises.

taekwondomom- a major misconception among women is that if you lift weights the way males usually do (which for the most part is already incorrect) then you'll get big like men... it doesn't happen. You can lift all you want, you will never get as big as a man unless you have abnormal hormones or take crazy supplements. Testosterone is the only reason this doesn't happen, women don't have testosterone and therefore cannot possibly get naturally large at all. Cut yes, but not large.

Black/Death Metal. (odd, cause I'm a christian too... go figure) the band I hate the most has to be cold play. I'M SO FREAKING SICK OF SPEED OF SOUND!!!!

Batman has to be THE best hero movie ever. Loved it, at first I was like "what the hell is that?!" (after having seen the batmobile) but afterwards, it was way cool. I love the darker more personal feel to the movie. I specifically loved the part where batman grabs scarecrow and sprays him with his own medicine stuff and he sees batman the way he does. Great morality stuff in it too.
