  1. Yeah pretty much it's just a generalization of the japanese hand/feet fighting systems derived from okinawa. Thai boxing is also a cool style, very good for keeping in shape.
  2. Hangetsu
  3. Remember the old karate flick Bloodsport? That one scene where JCVD did some kind of palm strike on the cement block pile and only destroyed the bottom block. Is this an actual technique that's been done by anybody here or is it just more of his garbage "Hollywood Karate" that I hear of. He's kind of a washed up joke in MA but it was an awesome scene.
  4. Knuckle Pushups are great. 7x10 sets.
  5. I find it hard to believe Drunken Boxing is an effective form of self defense and more for Movies and such. Can anybody say otherwise?
  6. Yes that guy owns a chain of TKD Schools.
  7. What about grappling? What about knee strikes? What about joint locks? Anyway, I find that you have to mix it up to surprise the opponent and make him possibly back off and think to himself "Damn, this guy must know how to fight". If he too is trained to fight, then I'd have to judge the distance between you and your enemy. A long range of about 2 meters or so and you should use your legs to keep the distance but close range and try throwing a knife hand or a rigid to his neck/upper body followed by a knee or hook to the kidney.
  8. What? You honestly think that Van Damme (A Balle dancer and gymnist who cannot prove his karate backround) would stand a chance against a 7th degree DAN like Steven Seagal?
  9. Remember that Martial Arts is like a sport where you need to train daily, like Basketball players, Baseball players, Boxers, all train daily. If you have a job and a life, then this might be difficult to squeeze into a schedule, but if you plan on seriously competing, you need to focus on training other than sparring like running and weighttraining.
  10. There were so many varities of martial arts and the only "Legit" Karate school nearby is the Internal Power Franchise of Central Florida. I had a friend who was a certified black belt in Hapkido from St. Louis that went to my high school and talked to me about the benefits of Hapkido with a few lessons in grappling and defense (Like wristlocks and striking techniques) I do some kickboxing for the conditioning and sparring aspects and Hapkido for self defense. I find Shotokan to be less appealing than Hapkido, even though that's what I intended on picking up.
  11. Sure why not.... You can break somebody's neck with them right?
  12. Combat Hapkido is a nasty style which emphasizes joint locks (Wrists, elbows, neck, ankles) and pressure points. I love it because it boosts your confidence and allows you to perform better in a real street fight than say without any training at all.....not that there aren't 1000 techniques that would do the same thing. Hapkido is my favorite Korean style by far.
  13. A 15 volume encyclopedia? Yeah I guess Tae Kwon Do is the most common korean style for a reason. It's good. But Hapkido appeals to me more.
  14. 1910's to the 1920's. If you look him up you'll be surprised by his picture. He looks like a scrawny little puss. Find out how many guys he knocked out.
  15. AKA Combat Hapkido is supposed to be the ultimate "practical style" vs. a kicking style.
  16. It depends on if you want to hurt somebody or simply immobilize them. Judo is better for defense since your goal is to not start a fight in the first place.
  17. I've done a little training at a local karate gym and got totally manhandled by a boxer (Wearing gear of course). Any Karateists who can give me some tips on how to approach a boxer?
  18. I've never heard of Shingitai Jujitsu. Can you describe it or compare it to Brazilian Jujitsu?
  19. The "Big 3" styles of Karate are TKD, Shotokan, and Kenpo. Only one is in the Olympics.
  20. He stood at 5'2" and weighed 99 lbs. but he packed power a light heavy weight would envy. Boxing hall of famer and just an incredible fighter.
  21. Just alot of bobbing and weaving drills. Make sure you have practiced your footwork as it is essential in kickboxing and boxing.
  22. TaeKwonDo is in the Olympics...
  23. Yes it's pricey to compete, but alot of students from Karate schools (Like Internal power of Orlando) have sponsered teams.
  24. I started cracking up just reading the title of this topic. I've never really considered kickboxing a martial art myself. Martial Arts are designed to give the practitioner inner peace and harmony. I would consider it simply a full contact sport.
