Morio Higoanna has a series of books and tapes, from the Jundokan (Miyazato) lineage, also, check out Okinawan Adventures...they have a series of tapes By Master Glenard Grabow, student of Toguchi and Shinjo, of the Shoreikan and Shobukan lineages , respectively. Thats for Goju Ryu......As far as Kyoshu Jitsu goes, George Dillman also has a book out as well.....probably tapes too. Theres also "Essential Okinawan Karate Do" by Dean French thats pretty good too. Jim Silvan has a book called "Okinawan Karate, its teachers and their styles".....then you also have Funakoshi's "Karate-Do Nyumon", and "Karate-Do Kyohon". Toguchi has "Okinawan Goju Ryu". Draeger/Smith put out a book called "Comprehensive Asian fighting arts"....."Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na", by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming is very good...."Kodokan Judo" by Jigoro Kano, ....."The Essence of Internal Martial Arts", part 1+2 by Johnson.......I can list lots more.....but that should hold you for a while......

Feel....dont think.....exactly.....when teaching a student, I will often have them close their eyes while in a stance for example. I tell them to listen to their bodies, and instead of looking down at their feet to "see" the stance.....close your eyes and "feel" the stance....besides....getting into the habit of having to "look" at you feet while going into a stance is a good way to get knocked out in a fight....lol....the only way to acheive anything that requires "muscle memory" is through countless repetitions with proper form....training your mind to "feel" whats right is a much better way of learning than having to look while doing....when I work stances with my students, I basically tell them to start from ready stance, step into whatever stance were working on, pause and "feel" it....then look and check....if youre "off"...fix it, "feel it", then continue in the same manner. -

The main bar is a rather large one, and when the melee spilled out into the street, all the bouncers got involved....not against each other....we were all on the same side.....it happened to be a very large group of one particular ethnic group that likes to brawl in large numbers....seems they cant be men enough to go at it one on one......thats the bar business.....what can you do ?...LOL

Goju Ryu karate--Should I join?
Master Jules replied to nfl2k2's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Very true. But, my question to you in regards to your willingness to teach anybody everything you know is this : Don't you think that you have a moral responsibility as an instructor to NOT teach anything to a prospective or current student who may show signs that he/she has questionable intentions as to how they may use the knowledge that you want to so freely give ? -
Id go with Wado ryu .....it allows you to do more with the "soft" aspects of the style.

The stories I can tell....LOL....EVERY weekend....you know what happens....add alcohol...you get an instant a$$hole.....the night I earned the nickname "The Sandman" I knocked out a guy 6'9" 350 lbs in 6 seconds....my fellow bouncers made me a special staff shirt that says "Sandman"..."go to sleep" on the back. We were trying to get a guy to leave the bar at about 415am....he refused to let go of the rest of his beer...when my partner tried to walk him out, he spun and went at it with him....I was walking his friend out, he saw this....thought he had a good shot at me, and spun around to attack me.....wrong move...lol....I hit him with a fingertip strike to the solar plexus, buckled him, spun him around, and choked him out in 6 seconds flat.....I did a blood and air choke at the same time.......oh well.....by bouncer standards Im not a big guy....6'1" 205.......lesson learned....dont judge a book by its cover....LOL Other stories include a full out melee where all 30 of our bouncers from all 3 adjoining bars went at it in the street....traffic was stopped for a while....it was about 30 on 30 or so......patrons were pressed up against the windows watching.....they told me it was like watching a bruce lee or steven segal movie.....everyone that came within my "area" got severly crumpled, thrown, or just knocked out....plain and simple....btw.....I NEVER attack.....I always defend.....but I may defend with extreme predjudice if Im attacked from behind.

Goju Ryu karate--Should I join?
Master Jules replied to nfl2k2's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good question Thai......kata has remained simply because thats how the system was designed....the "secrets" of the kata...the hidden meaning if you will, are taught to students who have proven that they are morally responsible enough to "handle" these techniques......a responsible instructor will not (or should not) teach a student whom he/she believes would use these techniques in a "bad" way. -
Goju Ryu karate--Should I join?
Master Jules replied to nfl2k2's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Thai......if youll notice the first post....he was inquiring about Goju Ryu, and how it compared to the other 20 styles that hes heard of etc.......I simply detailed some of the points I wanted to make about how Goju "stacked up" so to speak.....Im guessing you already know my background in Goju Ryu, so its natural to assume that that would be what I was refering to. Yes, Im fully aware that not all systems have kata........I again was just refering to the system of Goju Ryu, which has kata, and very deep "meaning" kata at that. Just for the record, there is a deep connection between the art of Okinawan dance, and the creation of kata in Okinawan systems. Being that, as mentioned earlier, the Okinawans were under Japanese rule, and the practice of the arts had to be held at night, and concealed as much as possible, kata was created to conceal the actual "real life combative techniques" contained within Goju Ryu from the occupying Japanese. That is what I wanted to refer to, being that these "hidden" techniques found within the Goju Ryu kata contain such a large variety of fighting "styles" , the system itself shows there is no need to "cross train". -
PAL hit it right on the money.

Goju Ryu karate--Should I join?
Master Jules replied to nfl2k2's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
From 30 years of training, in many styles, Goju ryu is the most complete system I have ever seen....provided you have a knowledgeable instructor.....It has everything from punches and kicks to stand up grappling and ground grappling, locks, throws, internal chi gung....the list goes on.....I saw in another post that you thought Goju has no defense against weapons...lol.....it sure does.....examine the history of the art......when the satsuma clan invaded Okinawa in the mid 1600's....they outlawed all weapons, as well as the open practice of the arts.....the Okinawans learned to use all of the farming tools as weapons. IE....the bo, tonfa, sai, nunchaku, Ikabo (oar)....etc.....the system teaches defenses against weapons....trust me on that......someone also downplayed the constant practice of Kata......lol.....dont they realize that the TRUE secrets of the system are contained WITHIN the kata ?????? Note, however, that when I mean you "know" a kata.....Im not just talking about the sequence of movements.....Im talking about KNOWING the kata....IE: bunkai, kaisai, oyo, two man form......LEARN THE KATA......YOULL LEARN THE SYSTEM........and the secrets. Contact me privately, and we can talk at length. -
