A Good Martial Arts Book
Master Jules replied to IMGONNABEUSMC's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yep......Forrest Morgan......good book.....If ya like that....try "The Warrior Within" by John Little with Bruce Lee, and "Bushido, The Warrior's Code" by Inazo Nitobe.....Ohara Publications....about $10......GREAT book -
The circular stepping pattern of Goju Ryu has both offensive and defensive meaning to it....something that linear stepping doesnt afford you.....also, the circular blocking methods of Goju allow you to blend with the incoming technique, giving you the opportunity to trap and lock, whereas the linear blocking method only enables the practicioner to block the incoming technique by "banging" it away. Sanchin is a kata generally takes about 3 years to really "get", It is a form of "standing chi gung", and "moving zen".

Angela.....there are 2 fantastic products available to help with arthritic conditions. MSM is a natural sulphur based product, and Glucosamine Condrointin (sp?) Both products work wonders, they give AMAZING results....you may even be able to find them in combination by certain manufacturers. People that use them really see unbelievable results relatively quickly. My mom was complaining about arthritis, I recommended these products to her, and after taking them, she had remarkable results and recommended them to her friends, who also had incredible results. Give it a shot.....I know youll be happy. Good luck ! -

Angela.....I couldnt agree with you more ! It is too bad we cant regulate it....but as you said....its a catch 22.....Its a shame that newbies dont know whats right and wrong, good or bad.......we can only hope that they figure it out before wasting to much of their time and money.....and yeah.....forums such as this are a great tool for pointing newbies in the right direction. -

Master Jules replied to Karate-addict's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
JuJitsu.....thats the proper spelling....the "Ju" means "soft, pliable and yielding" -
"Dont eat yellow snow"

Its definetely not "Mcdojo".....but he has a very good philosophy behind what he does.....its really kinda simple....the harder you make the training...the easier real life situations become to handle.....I have to admit though.....some of the things he does are totally out of control.....but I would NEVER say Im not gonna do it.....I just "grin and bear it ".

Goju has elements of White Crane, Pakua, Shaolin Chin Na, Hsing I, Shaolin Kempo Boxing.......The Traditional Goju warmup is Yoga based, and lets not forget all of the internal Chi Gung excersises as well..... -

SICK OF THE LIES ?!?!?!?
Master Jules replied to gojuchad's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Great thread !!! Weve spoken about this MANY times......its like seeing a 12 year old kid wearing a 3rd degree black belt.....HOW ?????? and if it should take about 40 years to get to 10th Dan....if ever....how do some people claim to have multiple 9th and 10th Dan rankings.....that came up in another thread.....some guy (forget the name) had what ?....8 or 9 9th and 10th Dan ranks !!!!......How the heck does that happen ????? I dont get it..... -
I have film footage of traditional judokas in Japan using their own belts wrapped around a tree for throwing practice.....its a scene from the documentary movie called "Budo".

Seven.....what do you mean by "power training" ?....are you refering to powerlifting, or plyometrics ? In powerlifting, you most definetely will gain bulk......plyometrics, on the other hand, will produce an explosive power, but not a "bulk" effect. Being "huge" usually does limit your overall ability in terms of movement, unless you stretch constantly and correctly. Im also a fitness trainer for 15 years, so Id be happy to field any questions about that type of working out if anyone has any....

Situational Training

Space ninja......I love it.....lol -
You will find that physically, the arts and weightlifting have contradictory effects on the body. Martial art training helps to elongate the muscle, whereas weight tend to shorten and "bulk" the muscle, unless you do a light weight, high rep workout, with TONS of stretching.

iron fingers
Master Jules replied to JKDkid2's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I know this is gonna sound weird, but this is serious.....if you plan on doing fingertip training, it can affect your vision, but there are herbs that can aid with that. There are many meridian lines that begin and end in the fingertips....be careful what you do. Conditioning the palm and fist is a different story.......no real problem there. -
Blood chokes are great...again...depending on whether youre giving or getting...lol.....no matter how long you can hold your breath.....it means nothing when its a blood choke......doing it correctly means that youve stopped the flow of blood in the two major arteries on the sides of the neck.......just look at an anatomical chart to see where they are, and take it from there......good luck !

Im also a personal trainer/fitness instructor at a gym, so I get to work out on tons of machines all the time.....between that and an empty classroom to do my katas in.....Im like a kid in a candy store.....Then of course, like Shane and ShorinRyu......I LOVE the 12 oz curl......

Situational Training
Master Jules replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That sounds kinda like when my master comes to live with me.....lol.......jumping out of "the shadows"......but we do have situational training.....he likes to use a lot of weapons of opportunity.....stuff youd find in a bar, since I work in one......he likes pool cues, bottles, even stools......when we train outdoors during the summer......ALL kinsa stuff....garbage cans.....anything he can get his hands on really.....hey....reality is reality.....like SS said....not all fights start off with being "squared off".....and theres no such thing as "rules" on the street.....or "timeouts".....the only trophy you need to take home with you is....your a$$....simple as that.
