Welcome.

I think that with some caution (from you and from the instructor) you can resume your Goju ryu training, I'm 44 myself, I'm pretty healthy I train without any restriction I 'm also attending the competitor sparring class. (although I do not compete).

In a no-rules match I think antwon will win. -
How did you get started in martial arts?
italian_guy replied to BJJ is 1's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I started when the Gym where I was training opened a kickboxing course. I was bored to do step aerobics so I gave it a try... and I really liked. But then I wanted to do some more traditional MA and then I switched to Karate. I liked so much MA that when I was doing kickboxing I also joined a Tai chi chuan course... but for several problems I quitted that course and now as a second art I do JKD/Kali. Now I'm pretty ok with my training. -
Go ju ryu. I've made a pool on this subject you can find it at: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=16010&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=style&start=80

Good article! Even if I still think the belt system should be not a driving element, I think it has some importance. The only thing is that people has to watch out for its drawbacks.

Welcome to KF... I'm puzzled to suggest you an art which is half-way between Internal and external.... maybe my karate style (Go ju ryu) with some instructor which give some more importance then usual to the internal aspects maybe a good choice. In my school we rarely meditate but we do breathing kata and some relaxation technique but if you look for balanced approach (internal-external) maybe Go ju ryu karate is what you are looking for. .

Losing a sparring match is always a lesson, you learn more when you lose then when you win as long as you re-analyse your sparring after the match. No one is unbeatable. What was your limitation during the fight? Was either technical or physical or both? (this last option usually happens when you fight the opponent's fight like when you try to defeat someone with speed and he's faster than you). Did you notice any weakness in him? Then try to exploite them. For example I have someone in my dojo who is faster then me, more experienced then me, has better technique flexibilty and power, and he has also a good spirit and courage, he is about my same height and he is 20 years younger, I have no real chance to bit him but sometimes I land good shots on him do you know how? I exploit the fact that he know so much he is better then me that sometimes he lower his attention and in this way I try so surprise him with something unusual and simple at the same time, like a backfist with some strange footwork, try to play with tempo or the most strange things he is not used to . It is a desperate match but my real satisfaction is when I land a shot and he immediatly try to overwhelm me with speed or agility in a somehow (agonistically speaking) furious reaction then I know that he wasn't just let me have a free shot.

Ok let me go throu the arithmetics 16 a week makes about 64 pound a month which is around 100 euro little less maybe. For the same art (JKD + kali Inosanto method) twice a week I pay 47 Euro/month, the quality is quite good I think and the class is small (max 10 people). So I think it is expensive compared to here, but you should compare with your local standards.

Kickboxing @ the YMCA
italian_guy replied to unknown's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
This somehow reminds me my beginning with MA. I started doing kickboxing in a gym. But my instructor was a professional KB fighter, and the course was good. -
Orange yellow in Goju ryu testing for full-orange soon. (My system goes White,Yellow,Orange, green, blue, brown, black, this year intermediate belts where introduced) .

I agree with SR videos are better then books, I have many videos by Morio Higaonna (I do Go Ju ryu) and lots of other clips downloaded from the net. They are very useful. Of course they are supplements mostly useful where you start to learn a kata then you must put into practice their advices (some are not only execution clips they also give advices) and that you can do only by doing lots of repetitions.

I don't think there are arts which are totally useless in self defence. Although there are martial arts that teach you how to defend yourself faster then others. Arts like tai chi or aikido where you need years to find benefit in self defence or arts like JKD, BJJ, krav Maga, Muay Thai or kickboxing where those benefit are faster. Depends from your approch to MA, if your goal is self defence you must choose your art accordingly. This is my 2 eurocents anyhow.
