Hi, I'm learning that JKD takes elements from different arts and make a system based on basic principles (stated by Bruce Lee). So what are the ingredients of your JKD practice. For me (beginner level) those are: Punches and high kicks (boxing, kickboxing) Low kicks, elbows and knees (Muay Thai) Trapping (Wing Chun) Grappling and ground work (Wrestling,BJJ), Locks (kung fu, ci na) Weapons (Kali). What are yours?

Issue with fellow kyu; advise sought
italian_guy replied to jay46's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think the best thing to do is talk with your instructor about it He should explain him that his behaviour is not correct, your instructor has a stronger position and can handle the situation better than you in your position. Only if he fails or do nothing try to approach him directly being very careful... -
Very nice story (and post) AnonymousOne. I wish your friend best luck in his journey. I agree with you there's nothing better then MA to instill self-discipline and self-respect.

Yes taking the free lessons is something you should do to get the feeling of the art and the instruction. Even if there something strange in the website... JKD meant to be informal so I do not understand the need of a uniform.... (Cmon is not by chance you have only a t-shirt like we do I never saw a JKD practitioner wearing a uniform) and then if you click under the name of the instuctor you don't find any curriculum just pictures. So take a look and keep your eyes open.

"Sports Class" (sparring) do you guys do it too??
italian_guy replied to TKDguy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes we do have sparring class (after the regular class) and I attend it regularly. We spar regardless of the ranks although the more skilled use more control on the unskilled and sometimes they even defend only. -
Same as for me. When there is the preparation for a tournament we pair according to gender and also weight (like in the tournament) but in other cases we usually mix up.

Best wishes and keep us posted.

Congratulations!

I don't fear sparring in general, in my karate class the others are quite controlled although it happened once that I was hurt during karate point sparring, but ok, if it happends (unless you are not knocked down) just keep moving and breathe the adrenalin will do the rest. In my JKD class I'm a little more worried because there are 2 guys that have the tendency to go quite hard, but nevertheless I'm not too scarred.

No we don't have it, we use heavy bag and sometimes (rarely) we hit bare wood boards

My instructors are all in good shape, some are not perfect but not too much overweight. I can agree that if you teach you may do not workout at the same time but, someone who's profession is based on physical activity should mantain a decent fitness level.

I'm going to be balanced.. when I started training I started with left side forward (kickboxing) then I went to karate where they were trying to teach me to fight both sides, then I started to cross-train JKD where they teach me to fight right-side forward, so I think my present JKD trainig will compensate my previous Kickboxing experience and my karate training will help to keep the balance.

I have a similar background as you. Previous martial arts experience and cross training help on the general capabilities like speed, focus, footwork, reflexes, general attitude etc. regarding specific techniques I think you have to empty your cup because for example in karate (point sparring sport rules) hooks, overhands and uppercuts are not allowed, even jab to the body is not allowed, I took some time to eliminate them from my karate sparring (expecially jab to the body that sometimes I still do by mistake).
