Pat Morita (Mr. Miyaga) Dies -- Sad
italian_guy replied to liquidkudzu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
RIP Mr. Miyagi -
I think it's not too unrealistic, maybe (like Killer Miller stated) technical problems may have created a 20% increase of the speed but I don't think is too far from reality.

30 min video + BB. I think this is a complete crap. I agree that movie may instill the curiosity for martial arts, but here we have a different thing... this is a MA course (in 30 minutes) and a sort of diploma (a black belt). This is a complete fraud.

KarateForums.com Awards 2005 - Winners Revealed!
italian_guy replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Congratulations to the winners and to all the nominated -
From my current martial art practice I can say I'm trying to achieve both. My JKD/Kali practice gives me an overview of different Martial arts (Kickboxing/MT,kali,wing chun, grappling) while in my karate practice I try to focus on one art instead. However I think that in a street fight, who has the widest (not the deepest) knowledge is favorite. IMO

Yes, I agree on the number of 12 as the original goju katas, in addition to that we also have the 3 Taikioku which makes a total of 15. 35 is way too much. Also in our school there are kata that are learned only at black belt level. The coloured belt kata list includes: 3 Taikioku (jodan, chudan, gedan) 2 Gekisai dai (Ichi, ni) Sanchin Tensho Saifa Shisocin Seienchin So we learn 7 out of 12 classical kata before black belt. (plus 3 non-classical)

I cross-train in Karate and JKD. Karate is a good physical discipline and I have a lot of fun doing it. JKD is better for self-defence and is also very enjoyable becose is a mixture of a lot of different systems. So I like cross-training and I don't see any disadvantages (except that I pay double ).

motivation problem; lost of interest
italian_guy replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm glad you have regained some motivation... but still I repeat my advice do not overestimate black belt I know it is an important milestone... but don't stumble on it! -
In my school Sanchin and Tensho are taught at Orange belt level. I've just started studing it.

Which Martial art is better Karate or jujitsu?
italian_guy replied to japanman's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I fully agree; and I add that comparing karate with Ju-jitsu it is not like comparing Kickboxing with Judo. Traditional Ju-Jitsu incorporates all sort of strikes and Karate (expecially the style I study namely Goju) incorporates throws. They complement well each other and somehow both include some elements of each other (not like kickboxing and Judo like in the example I made at the beginning which are a purely striking and a purely grappling art). So you may study both or you may study only one of them, knowing that a good school in one of these two arts will also teach you the basics of the other. -
motivation problem; lost of interest

I have to make a question about something I really do not understand completely in your story... You said that you have a "second" MA which is Ju-Jitsu do you feel the same lack of motivation for it or not? If not I have a suspicion... I suspect that this story of the Black Belt test has a big impact on your loss of motivation... maybe inside of you you gave an importance to this test which is overestimated, and this exam, instead of acting like a stimulus, is somehow freezing you. The fact that you keep delaying it tell me this... you give too much importance to it. So my advice is: don't delay it any more, face it! Consider it like an ordinary test and, after you passed it, reconsider the whole issue. If you feel that your motivation has still dropped, you may take in consideration to leave TKD for any other MA or any other interest. That's my 2 eurocents -
During kata execution I kiai quite loudly because is part of execution itself, during sparring I do not kiai at JKD I just exale with a soft huh sound while at karate sometimes I do kiai... depends if it comes out naturally or not.

My organization in Italy has 16 years of age as requirement... and I agree.

For those in more than one art .....
italian_guy replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
When I started karate from kickboxing I had some difficulty because in WKF rules (the one we use for sparring) you cannot make uppercuts, hooks and jab to the body like I used to do in kickboxing. -

I think that kali, escrima and arnis are about the same thing maybe with very small differences. -
Styles in your city/ town
italian_guy replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ok, we have debate sometimes if kempo can be considered a karate style and not everybody agree on this.. anyhow even if you see it as karate style is not very popular here. -
