JKD is a MA that is built on the principles stated in the Tao of JKD and assembles various MA (Kickboxing, Wing Chun, BJJ, Kali,Muay Thai etc.) depending on the lineage. For example Inosanto lineage has more filipino elements plus lots of other different arts, Hartsell lineage has more grappling, Kent lineage more striking, and Taki Kimura(not sure about the spelling) lineage resembles more the original Jun Fan Gong fu core. It is non-classical because it has no forms and is in constant evolution, it is (usually) a MMA because has grappling and striking. It is user-oriented my former JKD instructor use to say (in accordance with BL principles): "you have to learn and try every aspect of the art but on the end my JKD will be different from your JKD and his JKD... because it all depends on body type and different individual ability, you have to try everything I can teach you but what you are going to use depends only on you" Usually in JKD sparring starts with light contact and progresses to full contact (with padding) it is very sparring oriented, people start sparring since almost the beginning.

Longest kata of Goju ryu is Superimpei 108 movements.

I used to cross-train but now I'm doing only Goju ryu Karate. I think that cross-training is extremely beneficial... The reason why I don't do it now is my schedule otherwise I think I would cross-train.

Same as me, but since last year they have introduced intermediate grade for each belt using double colored belts... so it goes white,white-Yellow, Yellow, Yellow-Orange,Orange, Orange-Green,....,Brown, Brown-Black,Black.

JKD
italian_guy replied to Atton's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I did other arts before starting JKD, it helped somehow but I also know people doing JKD as their first MA and they are doing ok. -
I'm doing GoJu ryu karate and like it very much, I tried other three MAs (see signature) but in one way or another GoJu ryu karate is the art that fits me more. We do kihon, kata, grappling, sparring, bunkai it is very rich and has various aspects, this is what I like the most about it.

Advise on a difficult decision, please...

If they like the style I think they better continue with Shotokan karate, but for sure it is time to change dojo. -
In my previous JKD school we used a different color in the symbol on the shirt.

Ah not for sure.

I think this discussion is very interesting I like to hear more about it! In the past I did more then one year of martial Tai Chi Chuan (Yang Style) but I felt no benefit from meditation or from the art itself. I don't think that meditation is a bunch of crap but I think is hard to find some teacher that teach it properly. However I'm very interested in Internal aspects of MA, now I'm doing a karate style which has some internals (Goju ryu) but the only thing we practice time to time is some breathig exercise at rest (in seiza position) and of course the two chi kung katas (Sanchin and Tensho).

Developing better technique, stay fit.... and continue to have fun

What BL did is basically develop a skeleton of a MA and stated some inspiring principles. This is IMO what can be inferred by reading his books. Then, after his death, his disciples continued his work and incorporated a lot of techniques taken from other arts. In today's JKD you can find techniques from Wing Chun, kickboxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, Kali, Silat etc. Not all of them were in the original core of the art but all the principles are still respected. So I have to disagree with Sensei Rick, JKD is a 'real' although modern and eclectic MA.

Fully agree with that, it is a good book for the practitiones of any MA. -
Does anyone else have a goal in mind?

TSD? I thought you were studying TKD. Is this a Freudian Lapsus? -
Who is your favourite famous Martial Artist?
italian_guy replied to Jeet Kune Do's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Bruce Lee for his new ideas, Bill Wallace for becoming a champion having physical limitation, C. Myagi for the developement of Go-ju ryu karate do. -
Martial arts and weightlifting
italian_guy replied to Azoth's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that weight lifting will complement your MA training and as red dawn said how often are the classes depends on the dojo. Shop around and see what is best for your schedule and tastes. -
Sorry, another question lol

...maybe also wing chun and Tai Chi Chuan deals mostly with hands and some low kick, another art that uses only hand is Ba qua I think.... -
I think that you are in a situation similar to the one I was when I started. You enter the MA world starting from a fitness point of view and then you started to like the art as a whole. My suggestion to you is to try karate, for those reason: 1) The contact is controlled so the risk of injuries is limited (although not absent like in any physical activity) 2) Karate has a certain amount of grappling but it is mostly striking (you say you don't like grappling very much). 3) It has a good fitness training (like most MA anyhow). 4) I think that 1.5 hours per week is a little too low so at least you should go to a different place. MMA is good as a full contact sport with self-defence aspects but I think is not what you are looking for.

Congratulations, I did JKD, as a second art, for a while and enjoied... I had to quit for a work schedule conflict
