  1. We usually train the kata we need to grade, plus the next one, in case we are asked to double-grade (a rarity). But we can dabble in learning other katas if sensei doesn't mind, in that it doesn't hinder our training.
  2. I think I'll make up a style...um...cathal Do Karate, and just now I've made myself an 11th Dan! *looks around* Damn nothing changed. 12th Dan! Ah-ha! I feel more powerful! No, wait that was a hiccup. *sigh*
  3. I'll try to be there to watch; but oh man that website really needs some work...
  4. Frustration can come easy with learning any new technique. You have to calm yourself, breathe slower and deeper and realise that you aren't expected to be perfect right now. The quality of the technique only comes with time and practice.
  5. tomato tomato lol But seriously folks...I personally belive that chi/ki can have a strong effect. Focus is everything of course, but also an honesty to your goal.
  6. The meditation isn't very long; though I personally wish 3-5 seconds can be too short a time period. Part of my personal training is in kikko, and I take it very seriously. Aside from that, the meditation is a very good focusing technique.
  7. I agree with Shorin Ryuu; Shotokan teaches both.
  8. Where can I get information on this?
  9. In Shotokan we have some moving in kibadachi in Heian Sandan, and Jion, for example. My suggestion: aside from practic practice practice, is that you strengthen your legs, and don't rise up when you move.
  10. What style, and where it is being held?
  11. Hello all, I'm wondering, when you are watching your students perform a kata, what goes through your mind? Aside from the physical techniques, do you consider "the story" of the kata? Do you think about the intent of the kata's philosophy? If you are judging, do you take this into consideration when you decide upon the score?
  12. My dojo is essentially the same; commands, terminology, numbers, etc. While we're on the topic, though, are there any good links to learn Japanese? Audio books, etc?
  13. I'd get rid of all the smilies if I were you. My first weapon were G.I. Joe men thrown across the room. My first MA weapon was of course the bo.
  14. LOL I imagine even a Japanese beginner has hit himself in the head.
  15. Yes the sectioned weapons tend to be more difficult to master because of the control. Once you strike something with it, they tend to bounce right back. But the bo is very powerful in its simplicity.
  16. I will with merguro, it really all depends on the dedication of the individual. Combine that with quality of instruction and the training cycle, and you've got varying degrees of capability. My sensei has told me that when I get a black belt I'll finally be ready to learn karate. Its a very inciteful thought.
  17. Which kata?
  18. Why would your sensei keep changing techniques? Wouldn't that be counterproductive?
  19. Still, a whole group of people running? I don't know...but maybe they knew him to be a vicious fighter? They were maybe waiting for backup coming.
  20. I tend to agree; there is a big difference between the two. That's a good reason not to get too caught up in the tournament circuit.
  21. I find the sensei does a lot of demos herself and we all get a chance to do the technique with the sensei. I find it is a great method. Although not very useful in huge classes.
  22. This is the method we use. http://www.aberkarate.co.uk/articles/howtotieabelt/
