  1. This is quite a simple thing to answer. Christians never use unnecessary violence. Sometimes violence is necessary... otherwise JESUS HIMSELF would not have told his disciples to go out and BUY A SWORD. Jesus died because he had to. Violence at this point in his life was unnecessary and of no benefit in the plan of redemption.
  2. I think Tim T meant a chin jab as in a palm heel under the chin; or a knife hand the to side of the neck. Two different techniques.
  3. The last one wasn't grouped very well. Personally I would throw a palm heel to the chin/jaw, or a knife hand to the neck.
  4. Maybe you could try the title STICKY: NEW MEMBERS PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING
  5. Can someone please make a sticky post which discusses this? I'm getting sick of seeing the same question over and over, dominating the board!
  6. Don't do weighted punches on a heavy bag! There is enough shock to your joints anyway, using weights while you punch will just increase the chance of damage to your hand and arm joints. Slow air punching with weights is okay, it will help to strengthen all the muscles supportive of the punch.
  7. Perhaps it looks like I'm going into circular reasoning. Of course there will be different ranges when you are at the extremes of each range, but in the course of a fight there is no distinct separation because the ranges change so quickly. Of course you will want to separate them initially during training, but afterwards it should all be flowing between them. Trying to force a range when you have already lost it will mean your end in a confrontation.
  8. Buy Speed Training by Loren Christensen. That has some good drills for reaction speed and movement speed. Alternatively, shortcut the entire perception process. Take up an art that promotes tactile sensitivity, like wing chun or tai chi push hands.
  9. Of course there will be difference in distance, if you use techniques at maximum extension for that limb. But conversation distance is where the real damage will be dished out. There are obviously exceptions, like if you threw a right cross and KOd the guy instantly. Conversation distance is the real fight territory. Lucky for you, this is WC territory. You're not going to throw long-range punches like boxers. Nor will you be throwing Thai roundhouses. There will be so little variation in distance that you can use all your limbs at any time. Get comfortable with it pvwingchun, this is where our style exists!
  10. Let me also add, the majority of street fights will begin at conversation distance (about 18 inches) and probably end there too. Essentialy you will fight at one distance for a few seconds. That's it.
  11. Two points: The majority of street fights last little more than 4 seconds. People can lunge at least 6 feet in one second. Distance is covered so quickly, and the total physical exchange is so short, that it is ridiculous to break down more than two, or at the most three, ranges. Of course there may be some breakup in training, but in a real altercation there is no difference between kicking and punching range, yet alone "fist range" and "palm range".
  12. I don't believe WC has several ranges. Indeed, you can use the entire Wing Chun arenal at virtually the same distance from your opponent. There are many martial artists that say there are two ranges - fighting or not fighting. I think WC works within this, after all, it's probably the most streamlined quanfa around!
  13. Wing Chun is fine for a self defence situation, but it's not workable in competition.
  14. This is a low single leg shoot, used quite a bit by fighters in Japan. I think the locked knee would limit the directions in which you could fall if someone used this technique on you. Like all takedowns, it should be done quickly enough that the opponent cannot react, or as a follow up to strikes.
  15. Striking - boxing, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, WW2 Combatives Trapping - Wing Chun! Standup grappling - Judo, Muay Thai Takedowns - Judo, Muay Thai, wrestling (various forms) Ground grappling - BJJ, wrestling (various forms) Stick fighting - Arnis, Escrima, various Japanese stick arts Knife fighting - Silat What about you guys?
  16. The most ridiculous McDojo I have seen is actually right in North Wales - John Lynn's Black Belt Academy. They hold special weekend courses where kids younger than ten years old can receive a dan grade. Each one you go to, you get a higher dan grade. They really have 12 year old 3rd dans. Of course, these ranks are not recognised by any other school, organisation or governing body other than their chain of schools. And it's not hard to get a black belt either. Recently I saw a front page photo of a girl in a deep front stance with arms out to the side, saying she had received a brown belt in only two years. Guess what school she goes to? John Lynn's Black Belt Academy.
  17. Adrenaline will sap your energy within 10 seconds.
  18. After his near-crippling back injury, Bruce was constantly on painkillers. So my guess is a mix of booze and painkillers.
  19. It would have been a bit better saying "strength training" instead of "lift weights". I personally do lots of different crunches and pushups, pullups, freehand squats etc, combined with Charles Atlas style dynamic tension/isometrics.
  20. One very good weapon if you're ina car and you can use it in time - a cigarette lighter. Been abducted? Push it down when the car's starting, then when the car gets up to a bit of speed, pull it out and stick it in his face or on his hands.
  21. If you're in a car or an office, you can slam their hands into a draw or a glove compartment.
  22. It happens a lot actually. They'll wake you up then sit you in a room at knifepoint/gunpoint, and demand that you give them any valuables that are locked away.
  23. Also, 100% of fights do not start standing up. You could be lying in bed an a burglar attacks you, or you could be sitting in your car when a carjacker puts a knife to your throat. But of course, this isn't fighting, this is combat. Fighting is when two people square off and go toe-to-toe.
  24. Not much to say really. The founders just learned those three styles, and taken bits from each and made his own style. Find out the origins of those three arts.
